Common Questions and Answers about Blood alcohol effects

alcohol

Avatar f tn The effects of alcohol are increased by medicines that slow down the central nervous system, such as sleeping pills, antihistamines, antidepressants, antianxiety drugs, and some painkillers. In addition, medicines for certain disorders, including diabetes and heart disease, can be dangerous if used with alcohol. If you are taking any over-the-counter or prescription medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether you can safely drink alcohol.
Avatar n tn What is a typical fatal blood alcohol content for non-alcoholics versus alcoholics?
Avatar f tn It is well known that heavy alcohol consumption can lead to severe liver disease including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, but the effects of alcohol on HCV and its treatment are less well studied. As described in the December 15, 2008 Journal of Infectious Diseases, E. McCartney and colleagues performed a laboratory study using cultured Huh-7 cells to examine the effects of alcohol metabolism on HCV replication and the antiviral activity of interferon.
Avatar n tn Furthermore, the mixture of both antibiotics and alcohol can also have some additional negative effects on the body. Alcohol and the Effectiveness of Antibiotics Alcohol does not effect the effectiveness of the majority of antibiotics. However, antibiotics within the tetracycline group, including doxycycline, are hindered by alcohol. If alcohol is consumed while taking a tetraycycline antibiotic, the antibiotic may prove to be less effective at treating the bacteria or virus.
Avatar m tn Now my BP is not normally high on a daily basis but it raises after drinking alcohol. Now my question is if my BP is high the next day after alcohol even with my meds does that mean my med is not working and I should change or is it normal for alcohol to raise BP and meds not to come into effect? Also should I continue to take my BP meds even on the days I'm sober and when my BP is normal?
Avatar n tn The doctor told me that the procedure lasts and about an hour. My question is can I drink alcohol that night, say around 8pm. What side effects will happen with just a local anesthetic. Thanks.
Avatar m tn Yeah it's not a good idea to drink with psych meds in your system. The effects of the alcohol and side effects of the pills get intensified. Even when I was on a low dose of Geodon I drank a shot in a tall glass and it caused me to feel like I was having symptoms of hyperglycemia and I had to urinate every 30 seconds or so.
Avatar n tn The doctor gave me Metronidazole pills to take to treat Trich and should told me i couldnt have any alcohol 3 days before and after takin the pills including the alcohol in mouthwash bc it was cause a bad stomach ache. i was also wondering if this included my toothpaste which has mouthwash beads? Avatar n tn Dear melgonzales64, i am a diabetic like you and not a doctor or medical professional. Alcohal has many different effects on diabetics which is why the American Diabetes Association recomends diabetics only drink two drinks a day. If you take insulin for the alcohol it will just lower your blood sugar since alcohol doesn't need insulin for it to be digested.
Avatar f tn The acute effects of alcohol depend on the concentration of alcohol in the blood (directly correlated with the amount and time of drinking). Initially, alcohol generally produces feelings of relaxation and cheerfulness, but further consumption can lead to blurred vision and coordination problems. After excessive drinking, unconsciousness can occur and extreme levels of consumption can lead to alcohol poisoning and death. Hence, it is definitely not due to stroke or heart attack.
Avatar f tn This might seem crazy but it's been going on for about 4 months now. Everytime I drink, whether it be one drink or 5 drinks, I wake up about 1-2 hrs after I go to bed with a racing/pounding heart and I'm real hot and sweaty. It's almost like an anxiety attack. Alcohol has never bothered me before and I was wondering if anyone had a clue about what could be causing this.
Avatar f tn Stupidly, I had several drinks and drove my car. I was pulled over and my blood alcohol was almost 2! I only had 2 glasses of wine! Could Graves disease have affected my alcohol level?
Avatar m tn The term “fetal alcohol spectrum disorder” (FASD) describes the range of alcohol effects on an unborn child. The problems range from mild to severe. Alcohol can cause a child to have physical or mental problems that may last all of his or her life. The effects of alcohol can include: * Odd facial features. A child may have a small head, flat face, and narrow eye openings. It may be hard to pick out one trait, but in general, a child's head and face just don't look right.

Avatar m tn I don't think there is a medical diagnosis for "alcoholism". They can check blood alcohol level, and they can check the organs to see if they've sustained damage from things like alcohol. For instance, a blood test would indicate whether your liver is working correctly ( at least at that moment in time. ). I would suggest reading the medical charts carefully to see what they actually diagnosed.
Avatar n tn I watched a documentary at the beginning of this year which was based on America finding. It showed that the UK guidance was giving mothers to be wrong information. Department of health States 1 or 2 small glasses of wine a week but the finding from American showed the startling effects on baby's movements etc. I've now just looked up updated unfortunately and now the department of health suggests nothing at all.
Avatar n tn Actually, the question is best answered by your doctor. It would depend on any other medications in addition to Metopropol, health conditions, and how much alcohol you'd be drinking. You might also ask your pharmacist. The following site offered this caution, in part. You can visit the site for the complete answer on food and alcohol, but your doctor would be the best reference. http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.
4266353 tn?1351944570 Why my face gets red and eyes get blood shot after trying a little bit of alcohol & sometimes I get profused heart beat and breathing trouble? I used to drink heavily(but never used to get drunk) since June 2012. I had some medication for sinus infection during July-August. And I started taking Fybogel (http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/digestive-health/medicines/fybogel.html) regularly.
Avatar m tn Some patients only need to be monitored by their doctor on a regular basis while patients with active signs of liver disease may benefit the most from treatment. Alcohol has damaging effects on the liver. Do not take alcohol. With early testing, regular medical attention, and new treatment options the prognosis is good. Hope it helped. Best luck and regards!
Avatar f tn I am wondering if my symptoms are the effects of heavy drinking and anxiefty. How long does it take for the effects of alcohol to go away and me start feeling good again. I don't even want to drink. I hope I haven't severely damaged by liver. Can someone provide some insight? How long does it take for your body to recover?
Avatar f tn I'm taking antibiotics, including Metronidazole 500mg for h.pylori. I was at my sister's wedding last night and took 2 glasses of bubbly to toast with the guests, and then switched to water all night (being under the impression that antibiotics just worsen the impact of the alcohol so this is why you shouldn't drink). About 6-7 hours later I started feeling really unwell (nausea, frequent washroom trips, flushed skin)..
Avatar n tn Let me tell you a story... To define my answer. In brief: My sister is older than me. She got married almost a year ago. I know my part about meds. She knows her part. I had a headache and I knew that later that night the BBQ would lead to a beer, and I thought: Ack, I'll let that beer be. The headache is more important for me to cure right now than giving my liver too much work. My sister on the other hand panicked when I asked for two regular tylenols.
2030686 tn?1351688548 If you are careful not to touch the needle it is sterile, if you touch it with something like an alcohol swab, it is less sterile. Alcohol swabs are good at cleaning surface dirt, but not so much for sterility, that is why it is not used for sterility in hospitals. In paramedic school, they taught us that the only germs that alcohol kills are the ones that cannot swim...
Avatar m tn Studies have shown that during the ascending phase of blood alcohol level, heart rate stimulation occurs. The mechanism is not well understood. Theories are either liver enzyme disruption or oxygen sat levels coming back up. ANother theorie is that as alcohol is cleaned up by the liver, it can break down into certain harmful compounds. SO I take this to mean that we should never let our BAC levels start to go down,, no no no, just kidding!
