Azithromycin for syphilis

Common Questions and Answers about Azithromycin for syphilis

zithromax

Avatar m tn gov/std/syphilis/treatment.
Avatar n tn It has no effect against chlamydia or the other bacteria that cause cervicitis in women and NGU in men, and borderline efficacy at best against gonorrhea and syphilis. The alternative to doxycycline is azithromycin 1.0 g orally in a single dose, which is safe and effective in pregnancy. If gonorrhea is a concern, then it's azithromycin plus a cephalosporin antibiotic, such cefixime or cefpodoxime; or a 2.0 g dose of azithromycin.
Avatar m tn Welcome to our Forum. Dr. Handsfield and I share the forum. You got me. FYI, the reason we share the forum is because we have worked together for nearly 30 years and while our verbiage styles vary, we have never disagreed on management strategies or advice to clients. This is a difficult question to answer with 100% confidence. The doses of azithromycin studies for treatment of chlamydia, NGU, and gonorrhea have been studied when the medication is taken as single doses.
Avatar n tn Vance, the sore were not open at the same time. to best describe it, it seems like they took turns.i am noticing a light rash with red spots on my arms. could this be a reaction to the azithromycin i took? what does u gut suggest when i describe the symptoms?please help. i should have gone to the doctor when the symptoms first broke out but for embarassment, i dint. i live in the US.
Avatar m tn Ofloxacin has no effect on syphilis, but Azithromycin may have . Any concerns over syphilis (which it sounds unlikely that you have contracted) should be discussed with your doctor.
Avatar n tn 04PM You are right that the data on use of azithromycin for syphilis prevention is worrisome however penicillin (or amoxicillin) is highly active and if you had been exposure to syphilis 5 days of amoxicillin would have cured it. Please do not th8ink that I am trying to "point a finger". I just wanted to let you know that I have taken the time to research but am still vague on the issue. Would 1.5g of azithromycin taken in a single dose cure syphillis?
Avatar m tn the TPPA and RPR test are all negative, but I take 12 pills of Azithromycin to cure my NGU during the 4 weeks, and I did not take the pills for 5 days before I take tke test.some one told me that the Azithromycin would cure the syphilis, and it will make the test result inaccurate, should I test syphilis again, and would the Azithromycin make the result inaccurate?
Avatar f tn You don't need to retest for anything. Your times were fine, and your tests are conclusive. No, azithromycin won't cure syphilis, but you don't have it.
Avatar m tn 1) I have heard that azithromycin is far from a sure thing when used for syphilis. If that is the case, is it not likely that it may have failed to clear it up and invalidated the tests done for a few weeks afterward? 2) Is a dark field microscopy really that hard to do. She (the Dr) said that the sore didn't have enough substance to it to test properly - should I insist it does get done for my peace of mind? Thank you again.
Avatar m tn As chance would have it, I have lead most of the research that has been done on azithromycin for syphilis therapy. A number of studies have shown that azithromycin in a dose or 2.0 grams (4 500 mg pills) taken at one time is just as effective as penicillin for syphilis treatment however, there are some cases of treatment failures with azithromycin for syphilis treatment and many of the treatment failures have come from San Francisco where you apparently live.
Avatar n tn ) as my wife would leave me for sure if she ever finds out. So after 1 day on Monday I took 1,5 g azithromycin in a single dose because I have read that it is a "catch all stds-antibiotic". My questions: 1) Will it be effective against gonnorhea and syphilis? 2) I have read online that syphilis strains have become resistant against azithromycin, how do you judge that for Germany and my situation in particula?
Avatar f tn 10% to 70% of syphilis strains in the US (depending on where you are) are resistant to azithromycin. And your risk is too low to get preventive treatment anyway, unless you know for sure your kissing partner had active syphilis. If that's the case, visit your doctor or an STD clinic for a penicillin shot.
Avatar n tn The augmentin taken twice daily for two weeks would certainly cure and prevent development of syphilis. The combination of cefixime and azithromycin would most probably prevent infection but it would not be curative if the infection was established.
Avatar m tn He took a swab, urine test and prescribed 400mg of oral Suprax and 1g of azithromycin. Test for gonnorea and clamindia came back neg. I am about concerned by syphilis. I noticed an elevated bump on my penis, no redness or pain. Would the medication I took cure syphilis?
Avatar m tn I have taken antibiotic medication for pneumonia, 5 days of 500 mg azemax (Azithromycin). Could that also clear any std specially syphillis if i had one?
Avatar f tn Monday of this week, I noticed what looked like an ingrown hair on my scrotum. I FREAKED OUT!! Syphilis came to mind. I overreacted and took a 1000 mg pill of Azithromycin in the morning and one that night. Still freaking out on Tuesday, I googled more and saw where recommened dose was 2 grams in a single dose. I took 2, 1000 mg pills immediately. The chancre seems to be fading, but Im still freaking out. Will the amount of Azitromycin ive taken cure or stop any progression of any STDs?
Avatar m tn last week the RPR and TPHA for syphilis also negative.... but just incase doctor gave me 2 grams of azithromycin to take... i took it 3 days ago and now the ucler which scabbed is still the same size and still on the shaft of my penis...... today doctor said give it up to 14 days to heal, but before told me it should have gotten noticeably smaller by the 2-3rd day after taking azithromycin....
Avatar m tn The azithromycin you took would cure all gonorrhea and chlamydia and may cure syphilis (there is some debate about the syphilis). Please understand however, syphilis is a rare disease and it unlikely (VERY UNNLIKELY) that your partner had syphilis. 3. Lymph nodes involvement in syphilis is highly variable. 4. I would not worry- your tests will be negative. 5. No, taking additional azithromycin is a waste of time and money.
Avatar m tn 0 gram dose of azithromycin would represent therapy for gonorrhea, chlamydia, NGU, chancroid and probably syphilis, depending on where you are. What you describe is not gonorrhea, chlamydia or NGU, chancroid is very, very rare worldwide and syphilis is also rather rare. As to what the lesion might be, that is difficult to say.
