Avatar m tn t been paying attention, a new government study claims that kids taking pharmaceuticals to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) score higher on math and reading tests at the elementary school level. The study is thought to validate all of the claims that drugs like Ritalin and Adderall are reigning in and focusing the minds of the younger generation. I'm sorry, but I'm still not buying it. I've long been critical of the very concept of ADHD.

Avatar n tn Hi, I wanted to know how appropiate it is to medicate a child with attention deficit disorder (non hyper) with Ritalin. I believe that Ritalin is recommended to ADHD children because it helps to control de hyperactivity but I don't know what benefits does it have with ADD children. Dear Yanira Figueroa: Yes, ritalin is used for both disorders. Ritalin helps a child focus. The lack of being able to focus on a topic or situation is common to both ADD and ADHD.

Avatar n tn Dear Anat, Stimulant medications are commonly used with even young children to treat Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, though the condition should be at a high level of severity to warrant such treatment in a child younger than seven years. If your child has tolerated Ritalin well, there's no reason to be worried about the use of Ritalin SR (Sustained Release). If the Ritalin is not helpful, Dexedrine can be used (in fact, it is often preferred in very young children).
Avatar n tn Limited research was done in the use of medications for ODD (oppositional defiant disorder). Stimulant medications can be used if ODD co.-exist with ADHD ( Attention - deficit hyperactivity disorder). Medications are not usually recommended as an option. Other treatment approaches that are found to be beneficial include family therapy, individual psychotherapy, parent management training and behavioural therapy. I hope this information is helpful to you. Sincerely HFHS-M.D.

Hence, a complete evaluation of this is necessary. While noise making could be an attention seeking activity, it may also be a part of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Avatar n tn One possibility is that it is symptomatic of an aspect of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Another possibility is that it represents a mild deficit in what are called executive functions. These are skills involved in mastering everyday tasks by inhibiting impulsive actions and sustaining goal-oriented behaviors, learning and otherwise. The various skills, organization being one of them, develop as the pre-frontal section of the frontal lobe of the brain develops.
Avatar n tn If a child has certain conditions, such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, working memory is often impaired. When you give him directions, be sure he is next to you and that you establish eye contact. Then, have him repeat the directions before he proceeds to execute them.
