Avatar m tn t been paying attention, a new government study claims that kids taking pharmaceuticals to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) score higher on math and reading tests at the elementary school level. The study is thought to validate all of the claims that drugs like Ritalin and Adderall are reigning in and focusing the minds of the younger generation. I'm sorry, but I'm still not buying it. I've long been critical of the very concept of ADHD.

Avatar n tn Hi, I wanted to know how appropiate it is to medicate a child with attention deficit disorder (non hyper) with Ritalin. I believe that Ritalin is recommended to ADHD children because it helps to control de hyperactivity but I don't know what benefits does it have with ADD children. Dear Yanira Figueroa: Yes, ritalin is used for both disorders. Ritalin helps a child focus. The lack of being able to focus on a topic or situation is common to both ADD and ADHD.

Sometimes it can be difficult to discern one from the other, but it would help your daughter if you sought evaluation. Avatar n tn Limited research was done in the use of medications for ODD (oppositional defiant disorder). Stimulant medications can be used if ODD co.-exist with ADHD ( Attention - deficit hyperactivity disorder). Medications are not usually recommended as an option. Avatar n tn I don’t think that her stubborn nature is linked with any neurological disorder here since it could be a normal phenomenon of an ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) child who reacts quite differently in such situation due to poor attention span. Your daughter with ADHD may have attention difficulty, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Therefore, by attention deficit she does not listen to what is said to her.
Avatar f tn One, but only one, is a manifestation of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. The fact that her struggle has occurred over a number of years lends some support to the probability that the attention problem is indeed due to ADHD. If it is, it can be treated.
