1472248 tn?1292614695 From the symptoms described this looks to be attention deficit hyperactivity disorder rather than anything related to the previous episode of rolandic seizure. ADHD usually presents in early school years. The child can be either primarily inattentive, impulsive, hyperactive or emotionally unstable. The child often doesn’t seem to listen, is easily distracted, cant sit still and is fidgety, has angry outbursts, social loner, becomes very sensitive to criticism.
Avatar n tn (a) Inattentive-type Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and/or (b) deficit in short-term or working memory. Sometimes it can be difficult to discern one from the other, but it would help your daughter if you sought evaluation. Neuropsychological testing can determine the presence of memory problems and can also help (but is not necessary) determine the presence of ADHD.

Although A.D.H.D is the diagnosis Dr. Anderson makes, he calls the disorder “made up” and “an excuse” to prescribe the pills to treat what he considers the children’s true ill — poor academic performance in inadequate schools. “I don’t have a whole lot of choice,” said Dr.
Avatar n tn When your daughter violates your rules, at any decibel, be sure to intervene. Second, she may display Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Overactivity and loud, frequent talking often typifu such youngsters. Don't rush headlong into such a diagnososis, but be aware it's a possibility. Some children are, by nature, rather loud, though they don't really dispalay any emotional disorder or condition.
Avatar n tn The nighttime experiences quite probably are related to his neurological problem. Relative to his concentration, has he been evaluated for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and/or non-verbal learning disability? Both of these conditions are found more frequently in those with other neurological problems than they would be found in the general population.
Avatar n tn I assume that the pediatrician's recommendation was made because, in addition to his seizure disorder, your son has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. If such a diagnosis has been made, use of medication (in light of the symptoms you describe) might be a very reasonable thing to do. Some, though not all, children who display ADHD do require medication and it is for them a responsible intervention.

163305 tn?1333672171 Even the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines, to which your report refers, do not question that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a “real” brain disorder, rather than a convenient way of labelling a child who is boisterous and disruptive in class. Ask paediatricians how often they saw children with “minimal brain dysfunction”, as ADHD was then known, in the 80s, and their answers range from one in 100 to one in 500.

Avatar m tn (a) Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), (b) Oppositional Defiant Disorder, or conduct disorder, but it is difficult to disentangle those features from those of BPD. I certainly exhibited episodes of hyperactivity-impulsivity or just impulsivity, but I cannot find any detailed information about these early years since everyone who knew me then is now dead or not contactable. 2.7.1.
Avatar n tn Limited research was done in the use of medications for ODD (oppositional defiant disorder). Stimulant medications can be used if ODD co.-exist with ADHD ( Attention - deficit hyperactivity disorder). Medications are not usually recommended as an option. Other treatment approaches that are found to be beneficial include family therapy, individual psychotherapy, parent management training and behavioural therapy. I hope this information is helpful to you. Sincerely HFHS-M.D.

773755 tn?1328123377 the term 'disorder' NEEDS TO BE REMOVED FROM MANY TERMS CURRENTLY USED TO DESCRIBE ILLNESSES. for a HEALTHY person, many symptoms and behaviours shown in conditions named 'disorders' WOULD INDEED BE DISORDERLY. but for a person who HAS the 'disorder', e. g. anxiety post traumatic stress disorder, there are REASONS or CAUSES behind the behaviours - so for a PERSON who has EXPERIENCED trauma and stress - THESE RESPONSES ARE PERFECTLY NORMAL. they SHOULD BE FEELING AND BEHAVING THIS WAY.

Avatar n tn Your son will need to undergo an evaluation to see if, indeed, he does display Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (the condition for which Adderall - and other psychostimulant medications - is prescribed). Adderall can be very useful in enhancing attention in students who display ADHD. And, when used properly and under expert medical guidance, it is safe. However, it can also be abused, and it can propel a student toward a substance-induced manic episode if it is not used properly.
Avatar n tn If a child has certain conditions, such as Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, working memory is often impaired. When you give him directions, be sure he is next to you and that you establish eye contact. Then, have him repeat the directions before he proceeds to execute them.
Avatar n tn Other times, an adult can either simply never been diagnosed as a child, or develop the disorder later on in life. Adult attention deficit disorder looks a lot like childhood attention deficit disorder. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, since the symptoms are largely the same.
Avatar f tn Ritalin is used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and narcolepsy (an uncontrollable desire to sleep). When given for attention deficit disorder, Ritalin should be an integral part of a total treatment program that includes psychological, educational, and social measures. Ritalin may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Avatar n tn Alice, ADHD, Attention deficit Hyperactivity disorder, is not necessarily correlated with IQ testing. There is no specific neuropsychiatric test that is diagnostic of ADHD; it is a clinical diagnosis. There are three types of ADHD: inattentive type, hyperactive-impulsive type and combined type. From your description your son may have inattentive type.

Avatar n tn Dear Anat, Stimulant medications are commonly used with even young children to treat Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, though the condition should be at a high level of severity to warrant such treatment in a child younger than seven years. If your child has tolerated Ritalin well, there's no reason to be worried about the use of Ritalin SR (Sustained Release). If the Ritalin is not helpful, Dexedrine can be used (in fact, it is often preferred in very young children).
Avatar n tn These days, many teens abuse stimulant medications, such Adderall, that are prescribed for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Sometimes the teens crush these pills and inhale the resulting powder, to provide a temporary 'high'. Heart rate and blood pressure can increase, taxing the cardipulmonary system. Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant when used in this fashion. Alcohol, on the other hand, suppresses the central nervous system.
