Common Questions and Answers about Ativan withdrawal side effects

Avatar m tn Xanax and lorazepam are in the same class of drugs (they do the same thing). I would check with your pharmacist. They are usually more informed on the side effects, etc. of medications than our doctors are. Hope that helps.
Avatar f tn Xanax, on the other hand, lowers my mood and has some serious cognitive side-effects plus a severe withdrawal that can be very frightening, but it helped me through a massive breakdown. For others, Ativan can be very effective since brain chemistry differs between people. Both can have serious withdrawals, but generally xanax can cause a greater level of impairment and more severe withdrawal (both can be very dangerous to go off of).
Avatar m tn At first she thought it was peri menopausal and was prescribed Xanax and Zoloft. Both gave me horrible side effects. The she prescribed me .5 Ativan and Lexapro. Ativan works for a little bit but whenever I take .5 mg of Lexapro it seems to exaggerate the anxiety. I started taking the medications for 4 days now . Is it possible to have any withdrawal symptoms from taking Ativan? I am determined to find something like herbal supplements to help me with the anxiety. Please help me. Thank you.
Avatar f tn I immediately began having intolerable side effects...night sweats, insomnia, tremors, anxiety, dizziness...I was feeling worse than before I took the med! I could not tolerate the side effects any longer, so I made the decision to stop taking it. The day after my first missed dose, I felt a numbnes come over the entire left side of my body. I felt clumsy, dizzy..overall pretty miserable.
10361664 tn?1409609407 This is my opinion, but this isn't a good idea. Paxil is very hard to quit taking and needs to be tapered off of slowly, but it's best to do this before starting a new medication. Zoloft cannot substitute for Paxil, as they're very different in the receptors they target and Paxil is one unique drug.
Avatar m tn . My question is could the side-effects from the anti-psychotic drugs cause agitation and involuntary yelling.
Avatar n tn It would be doubtful that cymbalts for a month would cause any probs...ativan however could be..i took cymbalta for 2 months and had bad side effects so I nquit it takes a month or more for the drug to really take eaffect..ativan is very addictive however//a month is not that long to have wds from it but we r all different..so it is probably the ativan//maybe a combo..but if that is all and only for 30 days..it should not take long to feel better...
Avatar n tn d only taken it for a short time. I tapered off of it just in case there would be side effects. I think Klonopin is similar to Ativan, which I was on for about 4 years before and I had a hard time getting off of that... I had to taper off very slowly and by reducing the dosage by 1/4 each step. I would get very agitated and extremely nervous. However, compared to getting off of hydro's, the Ativan was not nearly as bad.
Avatar m tn re suffering withdrawal from the wellbutrin, or side effects from Celexa. Quitting an antidepressant abruptly is not advised -- although wellbutrin isn't one of the worst for withdrawal, they can all be difficult to stop taking and usually are tapered off. This is especially true when switching to a med in a completely class.
Avatar m tn Alcohol will absolutely intensify the withdrawal symptoms of ativan since alcohol acts on the same receptors in the brain as ativan. It is true that these receptors are sensitive and vulnerable from the ativan withdrawal, so this explains why you may notice your withdrawal symptoms worsen when consuming alcohol. It is a good idea stay away from alcohol while withdrawing. I would not recommend suddenly discontinuing the atarax without first discussing your questions with your doctor.
Avatar f tn You were prescribed a long acting, lower potency benzo, and a short acting, high potency benzo at the same time, both for an "as needed basis"? How often did you take each type? Was the idea that a long stressful day required a Klonopin, and a sudden attack that needs immediate results required Ativan? How long have you been completely off of the Valium (and benzo's altogether)?
Avatar f tn If you are young I would not advise beta-blockers because they too have side-effects, although from all drugs that can be used for psychiatric reasons... the beta-blockers are the safest to use. (unless you are prone to a low heartrate and low bloodpressure!!) People shouldn't use any kind of psychiatric drugs unless really necessary. Read the link beneath to find out why: http://www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/139638?
Avatar m tn I was prescribed paxil and ativan originally. I tried the paxil for one day and did not like the side effects it was giving me. So I went to counseling to try and get over this without taking medications. Well a couple of weekends ago I had a really bad weekend. I went to my doctor because I was having abdominal pains and was thinking it was something serious (which is what my anxiety problem is: health concerns).
Avatar m tn I have been taking GABA as recommended by a naturopathic doctor. It seems to help with the anxiety without side effects. My question is what is the best way to taper off Ativan? I am so confused if I should follow my doctor or the pharmacist. I greatly appreciate any advice for those who has taken Ativan in past. I really wanted to take a more natural approach in controlling my anxiety.
Avatar m tn Different people metabolize drugs differently, which is why we get such different results and side effects from them. And quitting the regular use of any benzo is going to be very hard, especially if you've been taking it for a long time. That's why they are now usually only prescribed as needed. You have to do a slow taper off all of them, and the speed of that taper depends on how a particular individual responds. Some people have no problem quitting, others have a horrible time.
Avatar m tn If you are 72 hours in already, I would say just to keep going, I would get a little bit of withdrawal effect when stopping the Ativan, but it didn't last long due to being on it such short periods of time (which is what is ultimately meant for), but they were nothing too bad, mostly just anxiety and having a hard time with sleep due to anxiety. You weren't taking a very high dose, and not very often, but every drug effects every person differently.
Avatar m tn I have read the list of side effects, including irregular heartbeat/palpitations (the only one that scares me, and is a trigger for panic attacks). My questions are: In what situations does Klonopin cause irregular heartbeat/palpitations? And: I have used other benzos in the past, including Ativan, Xanax, and Valium, without experiencing irregular heartbeat/palpitations. How likely is it to experience it with Klonopin if I have not with any other benzo med?
Avatar f tn Did you taper off the vibryd or quit abruptly? You can't just switch from one medication to another even in the same class and avoid withdrawal -- these meds are not easy to stop taking and it must be done carefully. Unless you completely stop taking a medication before starting another it's impossible to tell if your symptoms are a sign you're suffering withdrawal and quit too quickly or are side effects of the new medication.
Avatar f tn I also worried about Ativan withdrawal, side effects, or interactions on all these meds together. Any comments or advice will be accepted. I'm experiencing rebound insomina, and mild to moderate shakiness in hands, cold sweat, and tinnitus.
Avatar f tn s just that I have heard of people who have experienced withdrawal symptoms after taking very low doses of ativan for a very short time. To be honest, even if I am not the addictive kind, right now with all I've been through lately I am unsure as to how my body (nervous system mainly) might react and honestly I wouldn't want to add to my already existing problems.
Avatar n tn I have a question I have been on lexapro for 3 weeks now and the first week was all good no side effects, I believe i had a placebo effect becasue i seemed happier, but then after two weeks of taking it my anxiety came back worse then ever. I have GAD. I take the lexapro in the evening around 8. I wake up in the morning with severe anxiety that usually calms down around noon, then i have mild anxiety for the rest of the day. After the morning episodes I feel worn out, tired.
Avatar m tn Wow. That's alot to just stop taking... The withdrawals will be severe - it's possible to do it but it will be pretty bad. Honestly? I hate to say this, but I wouldn't recommend going cold turkey like that. You're taking 2 very strong opiates... If you really want to stop them - is tapering an option? You could definitely ask your doctor to help you plan it... The ativan alone you really should not be just stopping, that's supposed to be tapered due to side effects.
Avatar n tn How long were you on it? Tapering slowly will minimize the withdrawal effects and make them MUCH more manageable. Why not go back to your doctor and discuss your issues the medication?
Avatar f tn I have also found that sometimes beginning with buspirone (BuSpar) and getting onto a full therapeutic dose of that medication prior to starting the serotonin antidepressant may reduce these initial side effects. As with buspirone, if you are on a benzodiazepine already you should stay on that medicine until these medications reach therapeutic levels and begin to work. 3.
