There are so many different reasons that could be the cause of your knee pain. Arthritis, Ligament issues, Cartilage or Meniscus tears, Chondromalacia Patella (knee cap) Bursitis and the list goes on. I don't know your age but my first guess would be arthritis, especially because of the way you describe it. Often when arthritis begins it will be after you rest an fairly active knee. And yes you can have it in just one knee.
Pain on either sides of the knee is usually related to meniscal tears, injuries to the collateral ligaments, and even to arthritis. Pain in the back of the knee can be caused by arthritis or Bakers cysts (cystic accumulation of synovial fluid, also causes a swelling). So as you can see, arthritis can cause an overall knee pain. Ligament injury causes pain to worsen on walking, bending and stretching the knee.
Last year I got septic arthritis in my left knee. Had 10 bouts of surgery on my knee to washout the knee. I still get alot of pain in my knee.
I had had a recent MRI which no one can explain to me satisfactorely. Hope you can be of help.
The MRI states:
"Severe degeneration of the medial and lateral menisci noted with fraying of the articular surface and inner free edge of the menisci. No ligament injury is seen.
Hi, at this age the cause of knee pain are arthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, bursitis etc. As you don't have history of recent trauma, it is unlikely to be ligament or meniscus tear.
Investigations like MRI, blood tests like ESR, RF, ANA etc are done to find out causes related to autoimmune diseases. Try cold compression, crepe bandage and pain killers like diclofenac etc.
I am sure there is a variation of the processes depending upon the individuals severity of the specific condition,

I have knee pain and swelling that comes and goes. I have been to an Orthopedic and have had x-rays and MRI. Nothing specific was noted in the x-ray and scan. The Dr suggested orthoscopic surgery to see what he might be able to do. I have not had the surgery.
He also suggested I may have osteoarthritis. The pain will come with walking, sometimes very quickly and sometimes not much at all.
He did an ultrasound and drew off some more fluid and gave him another cortizone shot. The first doctor drew the fluid from under his knee and the second drew it from his knee cap. It has been several weeks now and his pain is back he still has a little swelling but now both his knees hurt. He wears a brace on both his knees now. He has trouble getting up if he has to get down on the ground for something. We are not sure what to do now because both doctors has told him all his test look fine.
My first knee replacement was in 2002. Second one was in 2003 (on the other knee). For a number of years now I have had pain in my "knees". Even the tissue surrounding them. I've noticed that I can hear the prosthesis move when I move my leg. I swing my legs and they make a funny noise. Today I went to an orthopaedic surgeon about another (unrelated) problem and asked him about the pain in my knees.
Often (which happened just last night) knee and elbow pain keep me up as they get so achy and sore and couldn’t find any relief. So is this arthritis?? What can I do to relieve some of the pain? I also suffer from lower back pain and my jaw has always cracked when i open my mouth for as long as I can remember.
Though she was all fine till last month. Then she has a minor accident where she injured her right knee. Since then it has swollen and she can not walk.
Doctors said that she has Peripheral Arthritis as well. They gave her one Steroid injection and started her on sulfasalazine (1gm per day). Her pain has gone, but she still can not walk. She feel weak and stiffness while walking.
It is 6 weeks since her accident and 2 week since her medication started.
I was recently diagnosed with arthritis in my Right knee. I am 34 years old and was wondering if there is anything I can do for it and my back. A Doctor I saw in PA said they will not do anything for my knee because I am to young. I was told to just quit walking up or down hills and steps.(at the time I lived in the Mountains of PA in a Cape cod style house. So that was a little hard. Plus I have 2 kids. 12 and 8.) I have just moved to a 1 floor house in FL and the pain is worse sometimes.
Thank you so much for your reply and your blessing also. I am 5'4 and 149lbs. so I'm not terribly overweight although I have gained about 20 lbs. in the past six months or so. This is due to having a couple of surgeries and alot less exercise. That probably contributes to the knee pain since I'm not used to being this heavy. I do have alot more pain for about four days before I start every month. Can hormones make something like this worse?
