Common Questions and Answers about Armour thyroid hair loss

Avatar n tn s your thyroid have your hair loss evaluated by a dermatologist or hair loss expert to rule out any other causes. However, make sure your thyroid is not being under treated or change thyroid drug brands. It just might be the thyroid condition itself which just needs time to heal. Hair and nails are the last to heal and take the longest to heal than all the thyroid symptoms, so patience might be the only medicine.
Avatar n tn Nothing will truly help but getting your levels good, including ferritin... and choosing a thyroid med that does not cause hair loss for you. Armour and Nature throid work for most... unfortunately I can't take either of them :( Best of Luck!!
Avatar n tn Would test to make sure the thyroid levels are stable (TSH 0.5-2.5). The hair does not always grow back the same way after chemo. There are hair/nail vitamins that can be taken -- they are available over-the-counter -- it sometimes helps. The thyroid medication itself would not cause the hair problems -- but thyroid imbalance can contribute (ie if the levels aren't on target).
Avatar n tn My GP has only allowed me one months supply which i will try in a few days as my pharmacy have to order it in, the strength is 30mg, i was taking 100mg synothoid previously. Please can anyone let me if you have used ARMOUR and if any hair loss has now reversed and your hair has regrown. I would dearly like some regrowth, if not all, and are putting my hope in ARMOUR THYROID. If i cannot get anymore from the GP, i do not know what i will do. I welcome any comments or suggestions.
Avatar f tn I am at a loss. Is there a thyroid medication that will stop hair loss like iodine? Is there something I can take over the counter? About 7 months ago I started being treated for hypothyroidism. My bloodwork also showed low titers for Hashimotos. I had all the symptoms including the dreaded hair loss! With my doctors approval, I started using Iodine Plus along with Levoxyl. My hair thickened back up and shedding completely stopped.
Avatar f tn 5 Armour Thyroid in the morning and .05 in the afternoon. I feel great my only problem is my constant hair loss. I also take 150 mg of Buproprion which I have cut down the last couple of weeks and am going to switch to sam-e in hopes that that is my problem. Am wondering if I am over medicated on the Armour.
Avatar f tn Have you noticed any hair loss from the Armour? My hair is extremely dry now and just started to "fall out," while I was washing my hair, today. I read that Synthroid can do that too. Another reason I am against taking it.
Avatar n tn I took it for a week (I had googled it beforehand and saw that hair loss can be a side effect) and after a week my hair started to come out in alarming quantities! I stopped right away. But it has been over 4 weeks and still my hair is falling out. My doctor insists that DHEA would not cause hair loss but I've read many posts where it is implicated. He's re-testing me to see where my TSH and other levels are.
Avatar f tn My thyroid levels are normal taking armour and still having hair loss. Could it be the medications? I was on all the different thyroid meds. and still had hair loss. Would anyone be able to help?
Avatar n tn Please post your lab test numbers and reference ranges. To my knowledge hair loss is associated with incorrect thyroid levels rather than the medication itself. Even after starting on meds, and getting the dosage correct, hair regrowth may take some time. Armour is sometimes beneficial when a body has trouble converting enough T4 to T3 and some members have reported better results from Armour than one of the T4 only type meds.
Avatar f tn however, his offer to prescribe Armour might be worthwhile. Armour itself does not cause hair loss. Hair loss would be associated with inadequate levels of Free T3 and free T4. There is no need to wait for 4 months to see if the dosage change does anything for you That change will not help increase your Free T3 level.
Avatar f tn When I was put on synthroid after TT , it was a horrible situation. Once I went on Armour Thyroid my hair soon stopped falling out, wasn't as dry and felt better. Also, you have to make sure your levels are balanced perfectly. That can also effect it. I take evening primrose oil that also helps with hair growth, etc. I think that helped a ton!!!! Hang in there, I was about to lose my mind this time last year and I promise this too shall pass!!!!!
Avatar n tn Has anyone on this drug experienced hair loss? I've got hair loss and I'm on synthroid and trying to get rid of the problem and was thinking of switching. I could not find hair loss as a side affect of Armour.
Avatar f tn I have a question about my hair loss and my thyroid....not sure if anyone would have an idea of what went on, but I'm about to start Armour, and I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing here. \ I have had many hypo symptoms for years ....hair loss, anxiety, freezing all the time, cold hands/feet..... The most distressing symptom, by a long shot....hair loss. Three years ago, I had pneumonia.
Avatar n tn 25mcg) dose of levothyroxine for 4 months but stopped 2 weeks ago because my hair loss, which had been constant, was getting much worse. Can anyone tell me when I will stop losing hair? Also, does it grow back? And might I have better luck with Armour or another medication? Thanks!
Avatar f tn Hair loss is a common symptom of hypothyroidism. Sometimes, it's one of the first symptoms to go away when starting med, sometimes, it's the last. I'd guess that it's the Armour that has stopped the hair loss. BTW - I've read that spirulina should not be used with thyroid medication.
Avatar n tn 1. Thyroid agents are cardiostimulatory and should be used with great caution in patients with preexisting cardiac disease, including uncontrolled hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias. 2. The antibiotics you listed do not interact with Armour Thyroid 3. Armour Thyroid has a narrow therapeutic index, and the dosage must be individualized. Chromium could potentially decrease the oral absorption of thyroid hormones.
Avatar m tn Only since adding T4 to get my Free T4 above mid-range (and lowering my desiccated dose) has both my hair texture and volume improved. It should be noted that hair loss is a symptom of both too much and too little thyroid.
Avatar f tn You were under dosed on the 88 mcg of T4, as shown in your Free T4 and Total T3 (I assume) results. Then you were switched to Armour at a ridiculous dose of 15 mg. That probably caused more symptoms. Then when that was changed to 60 mg of Armour, that was still equivalently less than the 88 mcg of T4. Using the correct conversion factor, 88 mcg of T4 would be more like 1.35 grains of Armour, or 81 mg.
Avatar n tn s low it could definitely be a sign that you need thyroid medication especially if you are having symptoms. Hair loss also can be a sign of hyperthyroidism so you want to judge by all your symptoms to see where to start.
Avatar f tn 5 grains (90 mg) of Naturethroid (desiccated thyroid med like Armour) that my hair loss slowed. I am currently on 2.5 grains (150 mg). In my opinion, many people on desiccated end up undermedicated because their doctors look at the suppressed TSH which so often happens on this med and don't want them to increase beyond 60mg or so.
Avatar n tn Hair loss is most commonly due to stress -- if the thyroid levels are normal there is not likely much more to do in this case ---- with the exception of a trial of adding some cytomel to the T4.
Avatar n tn From most of what I have read, there is some type of hair loss dealing with thyroid symptoms and treatment. I had RAI for hot nodules in Dec '07 and started synthroid about 4 months later and yes I loss about 75% of my hair. It got to the point that I had the beautician cut it all off. Not bald but very low. I had 18mcis RAI and started out on 100 mcg of synthroid and now on 112 mcg and yes my hair is still falling out.
