Common Questions and Answers about Armour thyroid dose

armour-thyroid

Avatar n tn I have taken taken thyroid medication for 25 years and have been on 1.75 grains of Armour thyroid for a number of years. Recently it's effectiveness for me declined. According to my Allergist and lab results (a high Antithyroglobulin Ab and my nutritionist, but negative Thyroid Peroxidase Ab; TSH 0.9), I could be producing antibodies to the natural thyroid so he suggested a switch to Synthroid and Cytomel. At the time I was also showing some signs of too much thyroid medication.
Avatar n tn t experience classic hyperthyroid symptoms after severe over-dosing by my GP on Armour, indicate Peripheral Thyroid Hormone Resistance (myopathy being lack of thyroid hormone in my tissues)? My neurologist (not the Dr. who is dosing my thyroid) is looking into all possibilities, including referring me to muscle specialist or a thyroid one, etc..., so I will be printing off your reply for supplying to him. Thanks again.
Avatar f tn To: Stella Stella, You seem very knowledgable and I was hoping you could help me though adjusting my armour. I have Grave's disease and no thyroid (RAI). I took 1.5 grains of armour 1X day for a year with no problems. Almost overnight, my TSH raised to 5.8 and my FT3 dropped to 2.3, FT4 .61 so I needed to raise my armour. Ever since this time, I have struggled.
4544656 tn?1371593548 Is there an average armour dose that most people feel well on? I'm only on 75 mgs and I still have hypo symptoms. Both my FT3 and FT4 are hovering under 50% in their ranges. Does 75 mgs seem like a low-ish dose?
Avatar f tn I started on Armour thyroid 30mg 3 days ago and I woke up today with headache, dizziness, and unbalanced. My story started 1 month ago when my doctor started me on synthroid 50mcg. I developed left facial heaviness, dizziness, and unbalanced after only taking synthroid for 10 days. My Endo doctor told me to stop taking synthroid. I stop taking synthroid for 2 weeks, and the dizziness, left facial heaviness, and headache never completely resolved.
1018337 tn?1251567540 I have tried synthroid years ago and it didn't help at all, infact I was more tired, so I took myself off and haven't been on meds for years. I just started with a new GP and we spoke about armour thyroid meds, I have started, it has been about 1 1/2 weeks. Don't really feel a change yet. Wondering how other people feel about the armour and your experiences.
Avatar n tn TT 9/13. Tried various does of Synthroid. Have been on Armour Thyroid for two weeks. I take 60 mg in the morning and 30 mg around mid day. Question is 1. do I need to take both of these daily pills at the exact same time each day or can I vary by 15 to 20 mins with no ill effects? 2. I can do the am dose and wait an hour to eat, no problem. But the 2nd dose is tricky........do I take on an empty stomach and wait or is it ok to take with lunch? Thanks for any help.
Avatar n tn Should my doctor be using the TSH test since I am on Armour Thyroid. He always regulated my Thyroid using T4 and T3 but suddenly has begun using TSH. It is always hyper by that test but he keeps lowering my Armour and now I am having a lot of symptoms of low thyroid and my T4 is 6 on a scale 5-12.5. I sleep all day, only awake about 5 hours. I am so cold my toenails turn blue, my face has fallen and I look really strange. Feel really awful...
Avatar n tn maybe raise the dose of armour?
Avatar n tn It is because of the ratio of T4 and T3 in the armour that has caused those results. The best thing to do is try a lower dose of armour for a while and get blood tests. If you feel better at the loer dose then stay there but if you feel worse then go back up to the dose you are on currently.
3179512 tn?1344461428 I just took a teensy tiny bit of Armour for the first time 15 mgs (.25 grain) by dissolving it in my mouth and then drinking some water. Roughly ten (maybe 20?) minutes later, RING! RING! RING! RING! in my ears - seemed to go along with my heartbeat!! I immediately began searching online for "Armour causes Tinnitus" and nobody seems to have any answers at all, but there are a few others like me out there that swear Armour gave them tinnitus.
Avatar f tn Many doctors misunderstand and think that the equivalent dose of Armour is one grain (60 mg) for each 100 mcg of T4 med. Unfortunately that is incorrect. The real equivalent is one grain for each 70 mcg of T4, so your new dosage is a reduction, when you needed an increase and I expect that you also need to raise your Free T3 level. So you need to talk to the doctor about getting tested for Free T3, and make sure they do that every time you go in for tests.
Avatar f tn After learning about the importance of Free T3 here on the Forum, I got mine tested and confirmed as low in the range. Got my doctor to switch my meds from Synthroid to Armour Thyroid. After some tweaking, I am now taking 3 grains of Armour. My Free T3 is now 3.9 (range of 2.3 - 4.2) and Free T4 is .84 (range of .60 - 1.50), and I feel best ever. For info my TSH has been around .05 or lower for about 30 years now.
Avatar f tn I was on levothyroxin and did not do well. I had read so much about getting on armour thyroid that I was glad when the new doc ordered armour. Now I have been reading about the new formulation and am wondering if I would do better with getting my levels up if I switched to the ERFA? Will my levels ever get where they need to be if I stay on the Armour? there is so much to consider here. It sounds like you can easily have your RX changed to a different pharmacy that would provide the ERFA.
Avatar m tn I started with Armour Thyroid 15, then increased dose to 30 and started to have slight swelling of my fingers. When dose was increased to 60, swelling become worst, started to have some weird muscle pain, joint pain, appetite increased. I asked my doctor to switch to Levothyroxine and ALL my symptoms disappeared after 3 doses. Armour Thyroid is not natural for humans, but it's natural for pigs. I am glad I switched to Levothyroxine. I should do it earlier.
Avatar f tn Dr. Lupo: I have been on Armour Thyroid 15mg since Aug '08. All symptoms (fatigue/hairloss/muscle soreness/blurry vision/dizziness/feeling cold) stopped at first week of treatment but after that first week, I developed stomach inflammation (just had an endoscopy indicating inflammation consistent with daily aspirin intake). I do not take any aspirin or motrin, etc.. The only drug I take is Armour Thyroid. Is it possible to be react to Armour Thyroid in this way?
Avatar f tn The next thing to understand is that your 30 mg dose of Armour is a very small dose. Such a dose does not actually increase your serum thyroid hormone levels because the med will cause TSH to go down, which then reduces the output of natural thyroid hormone from the gland. Since serum thyroid levels are the sum of both natural thyroid hormone and thyroid medication, the net result of a small starting dose is little to no change in serum thyroid levels.
Avatar f tn I have been taking 90mg Armour Thyroid for over a year and I am tired all the time. I have no energy at all. I have talked to my doctor about every visit and he said my test levels are normal and he doesn;t think I need a higher dose, that maybe it's just stress. I have no more stress than usual and I am very tired. I have been diagnosed with hashimoto's, and would like to know if this is normal.
Avatar f tn I am 28 yo female, I had my thyroid removed 10 years ago due to non cancerous nodules growing on it. I've been on synthroid since I was 11 yo. Everything was fine until I went off birth control pills. All of a sudden I had a hard time tolerating my 137 mcg dose of synthroid. I switched to armour thyroid, but couldn't tolerate any more than 60 mg. I felt great on just 60 mg, however my TSH shot up from 1 to almost 8.
Avatar f tn Hi I take 2 grain of Armour Thyroid and at one point I took both grains together and experienced much of what you just described. Gimel (smart guy here) suggested I split my 2 grains of Armour Thyroid one in morning and other mid morning and I have not had any issues since.
Avatar m tn 4 The doctor told me to stop with armour thyroid bc my thyroid must be working by itself . The anxiety stopped almost completelly with Prozac which i will take for 2 months only . Thank you again .
Avatar f tn Hi, I want to switch from my 100mcg daily dose of Levoxyl to Armour Thyroid- what would be the equivalent dose? Thanks!
Avatar n tn TSH 0.03 FT3 2.8 (2.23-3.7) FT4 1.05 (.8-1.38) My doctor is concerned that my TSH is suppressed, and suggested I lower my dose. I am concerned that a lower dose will lower my FT4, since I've seen that in the past. I have read that Armour easily suppresses TSH, and one should not be concerned with TSH if on Armour .
