armour-thyroid

Avatar f tn s the difference between OTC thyroid supplements and Armour? Are thyroids processed differently? I thought the thyroid itself is a gland, so how can the stuff in an OTC supplement be glandular but not contain much thyroid hormones?
Avatar n tn Armour is a natural thyroid replacement derived from pig thyroid. Doctors (except naturopaths) do not like to prescribe it because they think it is inconsistent. It contains T1, T2, T3 and T4. Unless you have a problem converting T4 to T3, they would rather have you on the synthetic because it is consistent, although the generics, they say, have differences in the fillers they use and can be inconsistent, also.
178107 tn?1315947630 I have been on Armour for about 6 months now. It does take some time to get your dose adjusted correctly but I also did a lot of reading on levothyroxine versus Armour and I went on the Armour website and found a doctor in my area that works with Armour. The other doctors do not want to work with it because most of them are involved with the companies that produce Levothroxine and in my opinion probably get kickbacks for prescribing it.
Avatar n tn You might try using this link to identify doctors in your area that will prescribe Armour thyroid. http://www.armourthyroid.com/con_phLocator.
1554612 tn?1294410935 Are you looking for Armour thyroid medication? You would have to get a prescription from your doctor, then get the medication from your pharmacy. I see you are in Ireland; I'm not sure it's available there.
Avatar n tn 97 and felt AWFUL, and finally after 3 different doctors my OB/GYN put me on meds for thyroid. I feel so much better now!
Avatar f tn The dosage you are taking was fairly low, and now the doctor has switched you to Armour, but the dosage is too low. Many doctors misunderstand and think that the equivalent dose of Armour is one grain (60 mg) for each 100 mcg of T4 med. Unfortunately that is incorrect. The real equivalent is one grain for each 70 mcg of T4, so your new dosage is a reduction, when you needed an increase and I expect that you also need to raise your Free T3 level.
Avatar f tn I had my thyroid taken out in May this year. I was on synthetic but now am just starting on Armour. My thyroidectomy was due to suspicious cytology. Definitive diagnosis is difficult by needle aspiration and surgery is needed in some situations to be able to pin down a correct diagnosis. In my case, the thyroid was totally filled up with nodules so there wasn't much of it functioning anyway so they just took it out. I did fine. The surgery was as easy as one could imagine...
727481 tn?1231203771 I was taking 88mcg of Levoxyl and because I felt unwell taking synthetic thyroid medications my doctor is having me try Armour. She gave me 90mg of Armour in place of 88mcg of Levoxl. Can anyone tell me if that is a correct converstion since now I feel extremely unwell, internal tremors, light headedness, etc. Seems to me that 90mg is too high when I look at some of the conversion tables on the internet, but I'm not sure they are correct. My TH prior to the change to Armour was .45.
Avatar f tn I am in Virginia, and have no clue of how UK doctors view Armour. But most Hypothyroidism is a lack of T3...have you had a thyroid scan to rule out nodules?
Avatar f tn 20 ulU/ml cortisol (am) 544 range171-536 nmol/L What do you think of these numbers? Is there a difference in Armour thyroid and Nature thyroid? Thanks for your help.
Avatar f tn I have Hosimoto's and I've taken Armour Thyroid since 2000 and will never take anything else. Armour Thyroid is all natural - not synthetic. The doctor who first put me on it only prescribed Armour. He didn't like the long term affects that could be caused by taking synthetics. I had surgery in 2002 and 2/3'ds of my thyroid removed. The surgeon wanted to take me off Armour and put me on Synthroid but I wouldn't let him.
Avatar n tn Has anyone had bad effects on Armour? I started a month ago(first time on thyroid meds) and initially felt great but then insomnia, heart palpitations started. I skipped my period. At first I lost weight and now I'm gaining weight even though I've weighed the same for most of my 48 years. I feel like I'm swelling and am very uncomfortable, like I'm going to pop out of my skin. Would love to hear from anyone who's experienced this or has any ideas??
Avatar m tn CMMC Family Medicine Residency in Lewiston is crawling with what I guess are new doctors accepting new patients. I called asking if any one of those doctors would prescribe Armour. Of course the person on the other end drew a blank. "You'd have to make an appointment to find out," she said. Yuh, I don't THINK so. I explained that making appointment after appointment with doctors who REFUSE to prescribe Armour (like my current endo) would be FUTILE.
Avatar m tn t benefit from Synthroid - you are very lucky your found Synthroid to work best for you - it is the thyroid drug of choice and many doctors will not continue Armour if you need to change to someone else. Go back to what works - and the question is still ot there - Why did you try it if Synthroid was working?
4939681 tn?1361299299 Another possibility is that by taking adequate thyroid meds, you will dampen the normal function of the thyroid gland and antibodies, and when you are taking enough of the Armour, you could find that the effect of the antibodies diminish, and stabilize your condition for the better.
Avatar m tn Been on tirosint 112 mcg for about 3 weeks after being taking off armour thyroid. These symptoms I get every morning a couple of hours after taking medicine. Headache, neck pain, leg cramps, warm weird feeling in face, some tightness in throat. I've been having a hard time with most thyroid meds. not sure why but the doctors not sure either. It also messes with my appetite and sometimes causes nausea and vomiting depending on how bad the headaches get.
Avatar f tn I had never had these symptoms until 2 years ago and my life has been a nightmare ever since. I found a doctor who put me on Armour thyroid 90 and I took it for two days and felt very emotional. Now I am on 150 mcg of Synthroid and 5mg of Cytomel mixed and I feel like I have so much tension in my body I don't know what to do with it. I am also very fuzzy headed and feel sometime like a third person. I have been to a few doctors who don't seem to understand how I feel.
Avatar f tn I went to an endo and he switched me from armour thyroid 90 mg to synthroid 88 mg thinking it would help with bone loss. I have been on it for 3 wks and feel extremely lethargic and I'm freezing. My friend things I should try levoxyl because she didn't do well on synthroid.
Avatar m tn In the USA at least, all hormones including thyroid hormone(s) T4 (Synthroid) and T3 (Cytomel) and Any natural desiccated thyroid med like Armour require doctor Prescription. To dose thyroid you absolutely need to be tested for at a minimum Free T4 and Free T3 tests. Typically people need to be at least in the middle of the reference range for BOTH thyroid hormones if not a bit higher int he range.
595417 tn?1222819446 It will give you a true reading throughout the day and night. As far as the dr that will prescribe armour, you can go to stop the thyroid madness website and check their physician locator for armour prescribing drs. I think the armour website has the same type of locator. Also on one last note: Did you have all the tests done for autoimmune thyroid disease? Do you have hashi's? Did you have a free t3 and free t4 test done with your last tsh?
Avatar n tn Boy - you are in the heart of Armour country there. I live in Wisconsin - but I can say that many top thyroid/Armour doctors are in that area. I can't give you first hand information - but you should find a suitable physician where you're at. I am however concerned that saliva testing for thyroid and adrenals may be difficult for you there. You should check that out in case you need those tests.
Avatar f tn i suggested to my doctor that i wanted to change from levothyroxine to armour thyroid and she tried to very convincingly persuade me to stick with the levo but increase the mcg to suit my body's needs...i pushed for the armour thyroid and she declined to switch it. i now am stuck with taking levothyroxine 100mcg, and i have to go see an endocrine specialist to even get approved to take the armour thyroid. ive read nothing but 100% good things about the armour thyroid...
Avatar f tn find a good thyroid doctor who will sit and work with you, one that will try anything and everything. We found that I am allergic to the cytomel that I take with the synthroid. . I have been going to to a kinseyologist ( can't spell it) for desensitizing . And it has worked, Ever since ARMOUR THYROID was reformulated I do not do well with synthetic Keep on your doctors and don't let them tell you that this it it!
