Avatar n tn Any suggestions on added exercises for my sister's right arm would be helpful. Leina lives in El Paso, Tx, and I live in San Francisco, CA. Leina (47yrs) suffered a Hemorrhagic Stroke (left side) on Feb. 13, 2008, which has caused paralysis on her right side. After cranial surgery from the Hemorrhage, and an Aneurysm Coiling, Leina is now in an Adult Foster Home.
Avatar m tn If you have access to a gym you could work on the exercise machines that require two arms and start exercising with both arms and slowly remove the good one and keep going with the bad arm at the lowest weight setting.. Read the book Stronger After Stroke by Peter Levine for lots more ideas on what recovery will look like.
Avatar m tn I had a stroke couple of months ago and I my right hand and arm went into paralysis. However, without any OT, they were recovered and I can now do 90% of the stuff that I could do now. However, I have a facial droop on my right side as my lower face is not responsive. Can anyone tell me how long such conditions last after a stroke ?
Avatar f tn I had months of PT for my leg AND my arm. You should be able to get PT for her arm also, unless she has shown no progress at all with it. Then the therapist cannot continue. Your mother can try to do the exercises that she did get from her sessions with her hand and arm. If she is able to make any progress, I think that the therapy would continue. I am NOT doing well after my stroke--5 years later. I have chronic 24/7 headaches which are often severe, caused by my stroke.
Avatar f tn Either way ask for what therapy should be followed to address any deficits and ask for a doctors order for those therapies, which may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy. You should never have been allowed out of the hospital without some explanation of preventative measues being taken. Does he have any deficits? With that knowledge someone here could respond specifically.
Avatar m tn My wife of 40 years suffered a stroke August 7th. She just started to be able to speak on Sept 9. The doctor said the swelling in the brain did NOT stop until around August 28th and said that when the swelling ended then recovery would begin. Is that correct? She is paralyzed on the LEFT side with sensation now in the left leg; none on the left arm. She has left-side neglect but that seems to have lessened slightly.
Avatar f tn This has happened several times to me. Once eating a salad, another time eating a burger. I am literally gasping for air. I am afriad I am going to pass out from this. I am afraid to put anything in my mouth. What could be causing these spasms?
Avatar m tn You should not be waiting to see a doctor when you suspect a TIA as if you had one, it is very possible you could have a stroke while waiting for treatment. Danger level is high & you need treatment started today! Please, won't you see the doctor today on this & if need be, go to the ER if the doctor can't squeeze you in today? Using a magnetic resonance machine, doing an MRA/MRV, is better than CT scan when looking for evidence of TIA (infarcts) in your head.
Avatar n tn Is there a website listing support groups for stoke victims? Does anyone know if there is a support group for stroke victims in the Owatonna or Faribault, Minnesota area? Thank you!
Avatar f tn People often age after going through something like that. Be thankful that it was a mini stroke and that you aren't confined to a wheelchair or have paralysis for the rest of your life. Do you have family you could discuss your feelings with?...a dear girlfriend?...sister? If you are able to do so, you might volunteer somewhere in your community...maybe with true stroke victims...and not only help them, but help you, too.
1474053 tn?1297825738 I guess what I am wondering is since I have never been around someone who had a stroke in the first days after one is whether this happens to all stroke victims and if some of it goes away on its own. Its terrifying to see her like this and I read alot of hopeful stories about stroke survivors. I guess I just want to know from someone else going through this or have gone through this if they went through the same thing themselves or with their loved one?
Avatar m tn Physio was going well until I developed a swelling in my left hand that has caused muscle weakness and really inhibits normal physio exercises. During the day the swelling is not too bad, but at night when my arm is pretty much not moving, the swelling is quite severe and typically wakes me up after about 30 mins sleep.
5621588 tn?1371086206 I had a different kind of stroke, but have had other severe problems from it. Good for you for doing your exercises. However, I would advise you to ask your doctor about the involuntary inhalations as well as whether it is safe for you to be experimenting with food. As far as your anxiety and panic attacks, I would ask for some medication to help you with that. Keep in mind that as the last person said, people usually have improvements with time. You will too. Keep us posted.
Avatar n tn He has completely regained all that he lost with the stroke except his right arm. Can you please let me know if there are new type of treatment for his right arm. Otherwise, he is in great health.
Avatar n tn My dad had a massive stroke in December of 2007. He is currently being fed by a PEG tube and I have spent countless hours researching anything that might help. I found a system called Vital Stim Therapy. The therapy uses a machine that massages the muscles used for swallowing. I believe it stimulates the area with electrical impulses. The treatment is said to be highly successful. 98% show improvement with about 35% being able to swallow and eventually remove the PEG tube.
Avatar f tn My best friend had a massive stroke on Jan.16/09. As of Jan 18/09 she has been in a coma. She is 51 years old and has been in fairly good health. She has always been a fighter. The Drs. are only giving her less then 5% chance of pulling out of it. Anyone that knows the same situation with any words of encouragement would help. Right now we are helpless, just alot of prayers.
Avatar n tn and the other, a TMJ specialist whose assistant is a physical therapist trained to help recovering stroke victims who limited control in their facial muscles). My problem had started a few years ago, but it was so minor that I didn't think anything of it. It began with occasional ringing in my ears, and discomfort in my neck at night when going to sleep. I noticed this pain more so lying on my left side than on my right side.
Avatar m tn What I would be worried about is stroke. Can she talk normally? Is she confused? If you ask her to repeat a sentence does she slur her words or does it sound normal? Does she have a bad headache? Can she lift the arm that is numb? If she can't talk normally or can't lift her arm and so forth then she may be having a stroke and you have to take her into the Emergency Room right away. Diabetes can increase her risk for a stroke as well and also peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage.
Avatar n tn She can walk with a walker (with assistance), can move her arm and hand but she has no feeling in her limbs. This makes walking scary for her, using her hand difficult, she can't tell how hard she is squeezing, temperature etc. She is hoping to regain as much independence as possible obviously. I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this. I know everyone's recovery is different, however, based on your experiences, Will the feeling come back?
