I have noticed the beginning stages of cellulite around the areas where I give the Novolog injection. I am a 27 year old, juvenile onset diabetic. I am thin for my height and have never had a problem with cellulite until the change in medication. Can this be linked to either of the new insulins that I am taking?
I've never used Novolog, but had used Humalog for quite awhile until about 6 months ago. The Humalog worked pretty well for me,but when i switched to a pump, my doctor had me try Apidra and it's really worked great. My blood sugar comes down a lot faster with the Apidra and it keeps my post meal readings pretty good too....
I would be interested in hearing more about the specific problems your are having with the quality and the impact on your diabetes. There are so many factors with diabetes that can affect how insulin works in your body and it is sometimes difficult to figure out whether the problem is the insulin or some other factor. Extreme heat or cold can impact the effectivess of insulin. The injection site can sometimes be a factor in absorption of the insulin and ultimate impact on blood sugar.

The specific ratios for each of us is best computed with the help of a CDE ... not because the math is hard (it isn't) but because of the specifics that can play a role in why our ratios would be higher/lower and what factors might suggest we need to change our ratios over time.

I sometimes do this if I am very stressed and do not have a decent appetite and find that as there are no lows or fluctuations, this makes matters a lot easier. Once again I stress that the bg control at these times are perfect.
Novalog is an excellent drug, but requires a lot of insight and understanding in order not to be a danger to oneself. Many providers will not prescribe Novalog unless you are under a strictly supervised program with weekly reports to a nurse practicioner or physician. Novalog is a fast-acting insulin and it is very easy to get into trouble with it. The amount of Novalog injected depends upon the type of food and the number of calories in the portions ingested.
When are are you injecting the Novolog? Right when you eat? Or earlier. My daughter's doc wants her to inject her Novolog 10-15 minutes before any food, so it has a chance to start working first. You have to be careful with this, because if you inject too early you can get low. You might want to talk to your doc about gradually moving your shot earlier and earlier before you actually eat to see if you can find an optimal time that makes the Novolog more effective without making you low.
Lantus, Humalog, and Novolog ALL require prescrptions because 1) they have not been out on the market as long as the conventional porcine/bovine insulins (Humulin N, R, L, 50/50, 70/30, etc), 2) The onset of actions for Humalog, Novolog, and Lantus are quite fast (anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes), and although these insulins generally do NOT cause hypoglycemia episodes (low blood sugar), if patients do not know how to use them properly, they can lapse into a hypoglycemia episode and this can

As a start, I'd recommend you check in with your local JDRF chapter or branch. They sponsor this Forum and have physical offices all over the US and in several other countries.
About a month ago I started taking 36 Units of Lantus at bedtime using the Opticlik Cartridge Delivery System and during the day I use Novolog Insulin throaway Flex Pen and that is 12 units before I eat anything. I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???.
I believe if I were you, I would specifically ask his doctors why they feel this insulin is the best. There are many insulin possibilities, and I believe that the best treatment is to find the one that works for each individual the best. Without trying something different, you can't know if this is the best for him. Is he seeing a pediatric endocrinologist? If not, I would request a referral. Blood sugar spikes and drops are going to happen on occasion but don't have to be the norm.

In general the bolus dose (Humalog) will influence the blood sugar two hours after the meal and the basal (lantus) will influence the bg in between meals. You can also fast and do basal testing. If you are willing to learn more about dosing one or both these books will help. If not, and the results are not good bg management then a visit to an endo might be in order.

m 19 been diabetic since I was 4 and and I have gained 15-20 pounds with my new insulin regimen started about 6 months ago.I take humalog on sliding scale 1 unit per 10 carbs and I take it every time I eat and I also take 50 units of lantus at bed time.So my question is can this be causing my weight gain? I think the lantus initially caused me to gain about 20lbs. to begin with 6yrs. ago and I'm now over weight.I'm on my feet constantly at work 9 hrs.
At about week 2 or 3 I began experiencing sporadic rash in front of shins. Later, the itching and raised bumps appeared behing the knee at top of calves. Now I think it is appearing at left elbow. General feelings of itchiness accompany the outbreaks without apparent rash. I am attributing this to the new medication - Lantus - as all else remains basically stable in my life routine.
