Anxiety medication used for weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Anxiety medication used for weight loss

Avatar n tn I have suffered from anxiety on and off for more than ten years so there are times when I think I am having heart disease symptoms but there has never been any problems found. I'm nervous that being on meds would make these episodes become more frequent. Thanks.
Avatar n tn I've been having anxiety for just over a week, and since Tuesday I've been on Citalopram. I have barely been eating because of the nausea, and I've stopped drinking Coca-Cola (which I used to drink a ton of) because I read that caffeine can make anxiety worse. In the past week I have lost a lot of weight. Like 6-8 pounds in 7 or 8 days. I'm pretty worried about it and I wanted to know if I should immediately contact my doctor.
Avatar m tn It takes 4-6 weeks for the medication to reach full potential in your body, and it's not unusual for people to notice worsening symptoms, when starting on medication, as the body adjusts to it. It is odd, however, that your are reacting so quickly, since the medication must build in your system. If those symptoms persist, you may be having a reaction to fillers/binders in the medication. How will synthroid help you?
Avatar n tn Again, we are not looking for an antidepressant as much as an anti-anxiety medication with few side effects when used over the long term. Also, the goal is to help her with her anxiety, not to turn her into a zombie. We would want her to maintain her "true self," so to speak, not become overly sedated.
1340745 tn?1276396903 Should I really be taking more thyroid medication purely for the purpose of weight loss? If I end up taking too much to treat my thyroid, what side effects should I expect? I will be seeing the doctor again in a month, so we can obviously discontinue this quickly if something bad happens, but I don't even know if a month will be long enough for him to see results. Can anyone give me some advice? Thank you!!
Avatar m tn Free T4 of 1.1 is normal, are sure they measured free T4? where did you got those values (4.5-11)? Ferritin is your iron storage, 13 is low for a man, but how is your Hb levels (hemoglobin), RBC count? If you have nodules, multiple nodules are better then having only one (one is always suspect), so you must talk to the ENDO (if they measure more then 1 cm). Most of your symptoms (not the weight) probably are related to anemia. You must explore that, why you have anemia?
Avatar n tn I take topamax to control seizures and I must say that I am surprised doctors prescribe it for weight loss alone, and that you are willing to put up with the side effects of it just for weight loss when there are other weight loss drugs out there. The "goofiness and loss of words" bothers me tremendously. I have been taking it since April and that hasn't abated any. Unfortunately I did not experience any weight loss or loss of appetite from it like everyone says. I take 200 mg a day.
Avatar f tn I have not seen the loss of appetite or weight loss others above have discussed and I would never take a pain medication for weight loss unless under the care of a doctor who specifically prescribed this for weight loss. There are stronger pain relievers (hydrocodone and other true opiates), but the side effects are just too extreme for me. The worst side effect I have ever had with Tramadol is nauseated - for some it is important to take this on a full stomach.
Avatar n tn I thought these 2 meds were known to be weight neutral or cause weight loss. My doctor knows my concern about the weight issue as this is something I have never fought to maintain while everything else in life seems to be a fight. If I stopped taking all meds, would I lose the weight and go back to my normal size. I do lack motivation that's for sure! I think or say I will start a program and don't.
Avatar n tn What is the ingredient in topamax that allows for weight loss? I have used topamax for migraines but don't want to continue it. However, I was taking celebrex for arthritis and experienced a weight gain which I cannot shed. Is the ingredient in topamax which causes weight loss known? How can I get the same effect without taking the drug again?
Avatar f tn As soon as I stopped, in a matter of about 6 days, people were asking if I had lost weight. I also for some reason started craving yogart, so I started eating 2-3 breyers fruit on the bottom yogarts instead of snacks. They have omega-3 in them and help your brain get off the meds!
Avatar n tn I just started taking Topamax 4 days ago for migraines, 25 mg once a day, then I'll start another 25 mg in 3 days, I read alot about it being used for weight loss but I'm starving. I laid in bed all night last night with a burning hunger. About an hour after I eat I want to eat again. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't want to gain weight but at this rate I will. It also says it caused drowsiness - I couldn't sleep at all.
480705 tn?1208232150 Tastes just as good xD I am on Lexapro but it is a very small dose, so idk if it will affect me much, and im not eating a bunch of junk like i used to, so i dont think i'll have a huge problem with weight gain. So far i havnt noticed any weight gain (ive been on it for about two weeks)And i probablly wont be taking it very long,if it has no effect on my condition. But if it works than i'll be extrememly happy lol.
Avatar n tn I went to Mayo Clinic with nausea, vomiting, reflux, extreme fullness and weight loss from 105lbs to 78lbs. I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis with no reasoning for this condition. I had been battling stomach pain, parasites, full feeling for at least three years prior to this episode. They put on reglan worked great but I became very depressed. they recently put me on propulsid. It worked also but because of the scare about how it can damage the heart, they took me off of it.
Avatar f tn I understand i should really have cortisol at am and pm tested, but my thinking was if i got one reading maybe i could then go to my doctor and ask him to investigate further as without proof they wont do anything for weight related issues.
Avatar n tn I'm a diabetic, and I've been on metformin for years and have never heard of it being used for weight loss. I have not lost any weight while I was on it, unless I was doing something else, as I am now. In fact, metformin usually can make one gain weight. If you're on metformin for DIABETES, no, it's not forever. But don't come off it without your doctor's guidance. If you lose weight, as I have, your dose can be lowered.
Avatar n tn Celexa and all SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) inhibit or slow down your metabolism. They inhibit specific enzymes in your liver that allow your metabolism to function correctly. If you were already a poor metabolizer, it will even be more pronounced after using an antidepressant. However, after a certain amount of time on an antidepressant, your metabolism will be the same as a poor metabolizer even if you were classed as an ultra metabolizer before using the antidepressant.
Avatar f tn 25 mg/day Xanax but she was insisting in seeing a specialist and get antidepressant/antiaxiety which is not habit forming. She was concerned about my weight loss and wanted me to go all kind of tests which I had for my stomach and found nothing else than a small acid reflex. An old problem of mine is that when I get stressed I ate more than my stomach can digest and get an indigestion.
Avatar f tn I'm am now at a stable level of Lamactil and on LIthium, the combination of drugs are good for me, the Seroqual really helps with the mania and anxiety. For me it's a good combination, maybe not for others. It's good to be well read on the different drugs for sure.
Avatar n tn Since then I have been in a world of anxiety. I'm a runner, but during times of anxiety it is tough for me to run. I recently noticed the last few times I ran, I felt the flutters and pauses during my cool down. Not so much while running, but during my cool down. Never before have I felt these during exercise only at rest. My first question is does this sound like anything serious or is it benign.
Avatar n tn I, too, have anxiety and have had chest pains for almost 2 years. I used to have them every day and all day long, but they have gotten better, although I still have them. I've had all the tests run...stress, EKG, echo, CRP-Protein, chest x-ray, CT Scan of chest -- even endoscopy of stomach and gall bladder ultrasound -- all normal. I have normal BP, normal cholestoral, not overweight, non-smoker, etc.
Avatar m tn Anti-depressants are quite effective for anxiety, since anxiety is common in depression. Most antidepressants have weight gain as a 'side effect'. A lot of it I think is because when you are anxious and depressed you can lose weight or have poor appetite. I know that I never knew how well food could taste until I started on antidepressants many years ago. And YES I gained weight! :-) You go to the doctor for their expertise, take their advice if you trust them.
Avatar f tn Hello, I have been having what I think are anxiety issues for the past month and a half. Initially I had severe nausea, and ended up really worried and going to ER thinking I might have Toxic Shock Syndrome. They were unable to find anything wrong with me. Since then, I have been extremely worried about everything. I have a constant feeling of nausea, I feel like there is a lump in my throat, and I have been going to the washroom very often.
Avatar n tn weight loss -- however, antidepressants, of which SSRIs are some (zoloft, prozac, luvox, celexa) can cause weight GAIN, so the zoloft/lorazapam may be a bad combo for you -- have you tried paxil? i used it in combo with chlorazepate, then the paxil "pooped out" on me, unfortunately -- but i used it for 8 years without a single side effect ..
Avatar f tn All the 'statin' drugs do, like zocor, vytorin, crestor, etc.DO NOT USE STATINS!!! Other than that, all the psycotropic drugs used for depression, OCD, anxiety, etc, damage the nervous system and brain, stay away from them.Do some research and you'll see.If you do take a statin, and your doctor says 'it can't be the statin', get a new doctor. The evidence is overwelming.I see huge class-action suits on the horizons' of the manufacturers of these drugs.
Avatar n tn One of the reasons I went on this medication for my aniexty was my weight, and now my weight issues have come back. I do however, feel so much better mentally. I told myself last year, during the hardest time of my life, that I didn't care how fat I got, just as long as I was mentally sound. But of course now I am upset about my weight. I do want to go off the medication, but reading what others have posted I am wondering what is the most healthy choice.
Avatar f tn It is an anticonvulsant used for epilepsy, migraine prevention, and off-label used for bipolar and weight loss. I have read good reviews for people using it for bi-polar. I am surprised no one mentioned it to you already. Good luck, although I am sure you have already been put on something. I have found that the key to taking medications is research A LOT before you put it in your mouth. http://www.iguard.
Avatar n tn After avoiding zoloft, I was walking 9 miles a day, but, w/o any weight loss.... In the end, Zoloft reduced depression/anxiety, weight gain started to create anxiety issues. In the long term, zoloft seemed to be quite ineffective.
