163305 tn?1333668571 —Cóilín Nunan, Alliance to Save Our Antibiotics News outlets reported Monday that UK government scientists have found a gene, known as mcr-1, that gives bacteria resistance to colistin, often used by doctors when other antibiotics fail. Such resistance was first discovered last month in China, and in the past few weeks, the resistance gene has also been found in Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and in several Asian and African countries.
Avatar m tn Bacteria that have been made resistant to nearly all antibiotics by an alarming new gene have sickened people in three states and are popping up all over the world, health officials reported Monday. The U.S. cases and two others in Canada all involve people who had recently received medical care in India, where the problem is widespread.
1070570 tn?1283436213 [6, 7] The in vivo conjugative transfer potential of the vanA resistance gene from vancomycin-resistant E faecalis to methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) was confirmed in the first of these cases. This poses an emerging threat to patient safety. E faecium isolates with a complex-17 lineage have also emerged in hospital and community settings in 5 continents over just the past 2 decades.
26471 tn?1211936521 For six years, I believed there was a single-source connection between interferon resistance and interferon resistance. It is, as I suspected, a gene. The gene is SOCS3 - Suppressor Of Cytokine Signaling-3. The discovery of this gene also sheds some light on why prior nonresponders have more trouble acheiving SVR. 1. SOCS-3 is elevated by HCV's core protein. 2. SOCS-3 elevation causes interferon resistance. 3. SOCS-3 elevation causes insulin resistance in the liver. 4.
Avatar f tn The CCR5 gene mutation has been shown to provide partial and sometimes complete resistance to transmission of HIV. A very small portion of Europeans have this gene from either 1 or both parents.

Avatar f tn This came from Yahoo Plastic surgery patients have carried a new class of superbugs resistant to almost all antibiotics from South Asia to Britain and they could spread worldwide, researchers reported Wednesday. Many hospital infections that were already difficult to treat have become even more impervious to drugs thanks to a recently discovered gene that can jump across different species of bacteria.
Avatar m tn //www.research.va.gov/currents/0319-Gene-transfer-improves-diabetes-linked-heart-ailment.cfm That is probably the most current information. It's in early stages of development still with studies conducted with mice specimen. However, it does look very promising.
Avatar m tn In that case your chances of catching anything are slim, furthermore taking antiobiotics for absolutely no reason can increase your resistance to antibiotics. So when/if you REALLY need to take them one day they might not work.
Avatar m tn Its functions include Glutathione metabolism (glutathione is the Master antioxidant and when present in adequate levels it assists in keeping the disease signalling JNK gene inactive), transfer of aminoacids across cellular membrane ,Leukotriene ( inflammatory mediator) metabolism and other lesser functions. Do you perhaps have elevated levels? Anyway, I hope this answers your question.
Avatar m tn Good personal hygiene, dust free environment and a balanced diet will go a long way in building up resistance. If her school atmosphere is very dusty or cold then you could talk to the school authorities about it. Warm lemonade soothes the cough and steam too helps. If your daughter does not develop fever then there is no infection. Hot fluids will help her maintain her strength. At such a tender age most doctors do not prescribe too much of medication.
Avatar n tn I am a carrier of the heterozygous cystic fibrosis gene. In spite of that, I am a very healthy and active 56 year old male. It is my understanding that carrying this gene causes a thickening of one's mucous. Could this be the reason I have to clear my throat so often? I also notice that I have to clear after eating, especially milk or orange juice.
Avatar n tn My question is whether somone could show resistance to antibiotics within the first weeks of exposure or is this more common in more advanced stages of HIV/AIDS?
Avatar n tn Collies and breeds developed using the collie possess something called the multi-drug resistance (or MDR1) gene. While the majority of the collies in Europe and overseas do not have this gene, the majority of the collies in the USA DO have it, and therefore using ivermectin on them can prove lethal. This gene encodes a large transmembrane protein, p-glycoprotein, which is an integral part of something called the blood-brain barrier.
Avatar m tn Girl A is prescribed Deoxycycline twice daily for 1 week (Girl A never tested, but took antibiotics due to exposure) - Advised not to have sex for 7 days.
Avatar m tn Fulminant hepatitis resulting in hepatic failure has also been reported following adoptive transfer of immunity to HBV [22]. Thus, although adoptive transfer of immunity to HBV is a possible approach, it is restricted to the BMT setting and is limited by its potential serious complications. Adoptive transfer of immunity to HBV has also been reported in patients after liver transplantation [23].
Avatar f tn My husband (40) has congenital absence of vas deferens due to heterozygous mutation of cystic fibrosis gene. We underwent IVF cycle in Nov 2009 with regular lupron cycle. We had to cancel that cycle because only 4 eggs, only 2 of which were maturing. We are now getting ready to undergo another cycle in May. I just had my day 3 FSH drawn and it's NOW 14.4 and my AMH is 0.2.......YIKES! My RE says he wants to do antagonist protocol, but I don't have much hope.......
Avatar f tn You are very welcome. I think there are too many events and unexplained symptoms in your post which point to what I suspect, however, I must make clear that it is the synergy of many factors that contribute to individual situations. Genetics, viral load, environmental factors, heavy metals, etc. are usually involved, which is useful to explore and correct, where possible, when return to optimal health is desired.
Avatar f tn What I would like to know is if the people who have not taken many antibiotics in their lifetimes are as at risk as those who have built a resistance to them. Is this mutant bacteria dangerous because the antibiotics don't work for a person who has a resistance or because it is so powerful that even if an antibiotic works well for you, the bacterial strain is so powerful, it will override any known antibiotic? Does this question make sense?
Avatar f tn A potentially dangerous sexually transmitted disease that infects millions of people each year is growing resistant to drugs and could soon become untreatable, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. . . Scientists reported last year finding a "superbug" strain of gonorrhea in Japan in 2008 that was resistant to all recommended antibiotics and warned then that it could transform a once easily treatable infections into a global health threat.
Avatar n tn Short courses of antibiotics have long-term impact on microbial flora of human gut Short courses of antibiotics can leave normal gut bacteria harbouring antibiotic resistance genes for up to two years after treatment, say scientists writing in the latest issue of Microbiology, published on 3 November.
