Common Questions and Answers about Antibiotics probiotics

antibiotics

Avatar f tn Yes, the antibiotics will kill off good and bad flora in the GI tract. They will also kill off the probiotics if the antibiotics and probiotics are taken together. Many are suggesting probiotics be taken concurrently with taking any form of antibiotics as long as they are taken at least 2-3 hours after taking the antibiotics, and the course of treatment with probiotics should be taken long after the antibiotics are discontinued.
87651 tn?1259602403 You're just wasting money if you take probiotics while taking nystatin and/or antibiotics, because those meds kill the probiotics. It's usually following treatment with antibiotics, particularly long-term or repeated uses, and nystatin is just another type of antibiotic, that kills off the beneficial bacteria and creates the perfect opportunity for candida yeast to move in and get nice and comfy and hard to dislodge.
974371 tn?1424653129 I've used both (I'm on daily probiotics and just recently was on antibiotics for pneumonia) and didn't really have many issues. The antibiotics gave me worse diarrhea but it clears up after time - nothing in regards to adverse effects being used together. In reality anything can have an adverse affect with any medication. Even just taking OTC pain meds. All things are given on a risk/benefits scale, and he seems to think this one will work best for you.
Avatar f tn my doc prescribes me antibiotics everytime, but i just dont feel safe taking them during my pregnancy. I bought some GNC probiotics to take instead of the antibiotics but the warning label says to advice health care provider before taking them. But my apt isnt until weds. Has anyone taken probiotics during pregnancy? & did it cause any harm to the baby?
Avatar m tn It absolutely depends upon the quality and quantity of your probiotic. You want to take one that is in the billions count and is a good brand. You will then want to double dosage at the beginning to saturate your system. Are you looking to help replace and replenish good bacteria from killing bad bacteria with antibiotics? Probiotics will not kill bad bacteria!
Avatar f tn I am 35 weeks pregnant and I just fought a urethritis and cervicitis with antibiotics about 2 weeks ago. I can feel like I still have symptoms of an infection because of the smell and color fluids (yellow or light brown)coming out of my vagina. I was wondering if it would be safe for me to use Femina Flora vaginal inserts in form of capsules. It's a dose of probiotics that I thought might help me restore the flora in my vagina and help with any possible candida growth...
1472764 tn?1287588186 I've finally broken down and taken the antibiotics. Temp was 100.2 today. 10 days of azythromyocin. 1 pill a day. Dr. said its safe for pregnancy. I'm also taking probiotics to counteract yeast. Has anyone else been in this situation? Was your pregnancy and baby okay? I'm so worried.
3072999 tn?1356414732 Inknowthis is kinda off topic but since it is in direct relation to my Chiari Decompression Surgery I thought I would ask anyhow. I had surgery on 7/10 so I'm about 8 weeks post surgery. Ever since I came out of surgery I have been having 'tummy troubles'. It started with loss of my appetite, the only thing I would eat in the hospital (I was there for 48 hours) was those frozen Italian Ice cups they bring u.
1464587 tn?1307491605 t realize until recently, that if you take antibacterial medicine (like antibiotics) or supplements (like grapefruit seed extract and others) too close to when you take your bacteria-based PRObiotics, then the antibiotics will also kill the probiotics. Lose/lose. If you have not called your doc's office about the diarrhea, please consider doing so. I would. You shouldn't have to be figuring this stuff out yourself or on websites like this.
Avatar f tn I had bv and took antibiotics. Then a week later I got a yeast infection (from those antibiotics). I started taking probiotics and everything seems fine and I haven't had any other problems. Probiotics will not stop the antibiotics from working.
Avatar m tn So the Probiotics will stop the yellow color? Is it normal for the antibiotic to do this? I have one pill left to take but was scared to take it. It should be ok though?
Avatar m tn If you need to take antibiotics in the future after this is cleared up, please consider taking probiotics as well. You take them at least 3 hours after taking antibiotics and continue them for several weeks following antibiotic treatment. Probiotics and the 'good' bacteria the antibiotics kill off. They will help get an intestinal tract back in shape after antibiotic treatment and they can help to fend-off many of the antibiotic-related issues in the first place.
Avatar m tn I have taken quite a bit of different antibiotics back in May. I have stopped taking it a about 3 weeks ago, maybe longer and noticed that I have a hard time gaining weight now. I have had bad anxiety and depression as well recently which may have caused my appetite to go down drastically but when it comes back I start to eat a lot and it doesn't seem like I can gain weight like I used too.
Avatar n tn Antibiotics can sometimes cause constipation. Probiotics is a great idea, and whatever else you usually do for your son when he gets backed up. But I really think that since he just had scarlet fever, you should take your child to your pediatrician and let him get that indigestion straight for you, plus he can doublecheck on how that scarlet fever is doing, too.
798555 tn?1292787551 not sure) the antibiotics are taken, to avoid the probiotics getting killed by the antibiotics. My LLMD insisted on Saccharomyces boulardii (that is the generic name; one of the branded versions is called Florastor) because it can be taken at any time without regard to when the antibiotics are taken. That approach simplifies the dosing schedule, since you don't have to be watching the clock to know when and when not to take meds vs probiotics. Rarely, S.
Avatar m tn I had Diearrhea after using antibiotics. So I started using probiotics for a week. Then I started to feel bloated and started experiencing severe comstipation with cramps. Has anyone ever experienced something like this after using probiotics, the bran I used was culterelle. And a trader joes Yogert that resembles activia. It's been a month and I'm still experiencing same symtoms.
Avatar m tn Would someone please enlighten me about thrush. I was on antibiotics after an exposure(condom broke having vaginal sex). I was taking 2 types of antibiotics and then after 6 days my tongue started turning white. I stopped taking antibiotics nearly 2 weeka ago now but my tongue is still white, so my question is does thrush from antibiotics go away on its own or you'll have to take medication for it?
Avatar f tn A week ago, I got off a course of antibiotics (Augment) that I took for 14 days. It bothered me the entire time I took it. I gradually had bloating, distention of the stomach and tingling, numbness and a 'cold' sensation started later on. This hasn't gone away and has only improved about 30% since taking probiotics and eating a lot of fermented foods and coconut yogurt with live cultures. The Kevita probiotic drinks help the most.
Avatar f tn group b strep happens when u have to much bad bacteria and the thing about antibiotics the reason people have yeast infections etc are because antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria so probiotics are good bacteria so while the antibiotics kill all bacteria probiotics give good bacteria which helps not get yeast infection and they even regulate ur system. i take them when i found out i tested positive for group b strep i did research and alot of moms. with gbs take them.
Avatar f tn I was just put on antibiotics a week ago tomorrow wasn't before and I have to get probiotics and I'm also using an in hailer know did they explain what absent of good bacteria means I don't understand how it goes away and also have to be on a bland diet
Avatar m tn in March I contrated Giardia whilst hiking in Nepal. I took antibiotics and it went away, however I have had various issues since: Lactose intolerance gluten sensitivity/intolerance stomach pain/bloating/fatigue/diahorrea and most recently - constipation! I am really exhausted by all of this...I am thinking that whatever is going on in my gut has now turned into SIBO.
Avatar f tn My Lyme doc recommended a yeast-based probiotic (that is, not acidophilus) so that it could be taken at any time of day and taken with food. One brand I am aware of Florastor, but there are others. The more usual acidophilus-based probiotics cannot be taken with or near antibiotics, because acidophilus is a 'good' bacteria, but the antibiotics don't know it's 'good' and go ahead and kill it anyway.
Avatar m tn Actually antibiotics do have an indirect effect on the brain. Antibiotics do not discriminate between beneficial bacteria (probiotics) and harmful organisms. Some probiotics manufacture B vitamins, which are heavily involved in mental health. And when probiotics aren't home, harmful fungi and bacteria can move in. Then there's the issue of some people just having bad reactions to a particular medication.
684508 tn?1234917191 I don't really know if I have an answer for you, but have you taken any probiotics since you've finished your antibiotics? The problem with antibiotics is that they kill all the bacteria that are supposed to live in the gut. Don't use dairy products such as yogurt to get your probiotics either, because they are pasteurized products and don't have the right amount of probiotics for the gut. You need to go to a health food store or a supplement store and ask about probiotics.
Avatar m tn I just had dental surgery, and I was prescribed Amoxicillin 3 times a day until all the antibiotics were taken. I took three antibiotics a day and 1 capsule of probiotics. I had no stomach pain or diarrhea. People I know who take a full amount of antibiotics can develop bloody diarrhea. Any pharmacy sells probiotics. Take the probiotics that are refrigerated, the cultures remain active when kept cold. I wonder whether your nausea came after taken the antibiotics?
Avatar f tn I am being treated for a urinary infections with both antibiotics (Cipro) and antivirals (valtrex) because the cause is unknown. My question is, is it safe to mix both medicines?
