Common Questions and Answers about Antibiotics in veterinary medicine

antibiotics

Avatar n tn I would guess the allergy medicine you are speaking of is a benedryl-like product. That only works in 30% of the cases and won't take away symptoms already present but can delay/diminish further symptoms. Please see your veterinarian or a veterinary dermatologist. Your dog likely needs an antibiotic.
Avatar n tn Do they totally rule out a cyst or lipoma? I do know from experience with my dog that if it's a cyst, if they drain it and don't remove the sac, it will just refill. Have you talked to a veterinary dermatologist?

Avatar m tn LOL What I was saying was that by her having been on so many different antibiotics recently, you want to get to the bottom of this quickly because the bacteria in her body will ALL become resistant to antibiotics if you keep on like this, and it could cause something minor to become something very major if the bacteria have become resistant. Nothing will work on her for any disease. I would look up veterinary colleges in your area and make an appointment at one of their teaching hospitals.
Avatar n tn When possible, seek such second opinions from recognized specialists, those who are board certified, such as in internal medicine for example. That way, your dog will receive the best care possible. Good luck with your dog and her illness. Sincerely, Dr.
Avatar n tn symptoms persist despite all of the above, or if the symptoms only occur during certain seasons, then talk to your veterinarian about referral to a veterinary dermatologist for possible allergy skin testing and desensitization injections for pollen/dust allergies to identify and treat the underlying cause of the itch and recurrent infections, rather than just treating symptoms with medications (veterinary dermatologists can be found in your area by going to www.acvd.
Avatar f tn This forum is not for emergencies. Please take her to a vet or emergency veterinary hospital NOW!
Avatar f tn Dogs with fleas or allergies commonly scratch and traumatize themselves, creating a secondary bacterial skin infection/rash that makes the itch worse, and this is something that needs veterinary care. If skin infection is present, it is treated with antibiotics for 3-4 weeks and mild antibacterial shampoos.
Avatar n tn I have been on antibiotics way more than I would like throughout the entirety of my pregnancy and my baby is just fine :)
Avatar n tn If you are in the Houston area and have lots of money to spend, you can get a referral to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in the Galleria area. That facility practices human-level veterinary medicine. If anything can be done, it will be done there. Cost is a big consideration, but more importantly, quality of the remaining life of your dog. Sometimes even if a treatment is available, it isn't fair to put the dog through it.
Avatar n tn If your cat were my patient, I would refer you to a veterinary teaching hospital to be evaluated by a veterinary nephrologist, and other specialists. Is there a veterinary teaching hospital or a referral clinic, with veterinary specialists near you?
Avatar f tn Homeopathic medicine definitely has a place, but in my opinion, it should not be the only treatment. If at at all possible, I hope you can convince your mom to consult with a vet who also focuses on western veterinary medicine. You may also want to consult Dr. Cheng here at Med Help on the Ask a Vet forum. She practices both western and holistic veterinary medicine and I'm certain she can give you some insight on this subject.
Avatar n tn I have personally seen very positive results with adjunctive holistic veterinary medicine for kidney disease. Please research holistic veterinary medicine websites, such as the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association website, Chi Institute and others.
Avatar n tn It has been shown that veterinary acupuncture in conjunction with anti-inflammatories (steroids) and analgesics (tramadol and others) is highly effective and may be more helpful than anti-inflammatories and analgesics alone. If surgery is not recommended, or if you choose not to have surgery performed, than acupuncture is worth a try.
Avatar n tn Cellutitis is very dangerous, and I wonder if your dog should be an in-patient on IV antibiotics. After 4 weeks with no change, you really need to decide whether or not staying with this vet is the best thing for your dog. If you have a large teaching university close to you, give their department of veterinary medicine a call and explain the situation. It sounds like your dog needs a much higher standard of care.

Avatar f tn At the Veterinary News Network, we have been following a story about increased levels of fluoride in bone meal and meat by products in several national brand pet foods. To my knowledge, they still have not released the names of the brands of pet food implicated in this study. The report states that these 8 brands of food had fluoride levels 2.5x higher than drinking water. Unfortunately, we have been unable to uncover any additional evidence of problems.
Avatar n tn There is probably not one in Steamboat, but in Denver I recommend the VRCC - Veterinary Referral Clinic of Colorado at 303-874-7387. They have a team of internists and outstanding facility and expertise. Call them today as it may take some time to get in. I know it is probably a 4 hour drive for you, but they are probably the closest. CSU is also a good option. You will have to look at the map and see which facility is closer. Good luck and let us know what they find.
557644 tn?1222822602 I see you live in Indonesia. Do you have access to vet care there? It's entirely possible that your dog is dealing with mange, and that requires veterinary care. Since you mention pustules, she's definitely got a secondary skin infection that will need antibiotics. As far as dog shampoos are concerned, the best ones will have very little or no fragrance at all.
Avatar f tn You should consult a pediatrician for an in-person evaluation. Meanwhile keep the baby well-hydrated. Lots of electrolytes, such as flavored pediatrol.
