Antibiotics for viral meningitis

Common Questions and Answers about Antibiotics for viral meningitis

antibiotics

Avatar f tn If the doctor gave you an antibiotic without running any tests, they were negligent. You are not supposed to give antibiotics for viruses, because they won't work on them. And if you possibly have spinal meningitis, they should be testing you for that and seeing if it is viral or bacterial in nature. I believe it is typically accompanied with high fever. Meningitis can be life threatening, so if you still think you might have that get to the doctor ASAP!
Avatar f tn There are a several causes for meningitis, including viral infections, bacterial infections, fungal infections and parasites. The two viral diseases in dogs that are known to cause meningitis are distemper and parvovirus, with distemper being much more likely to be the culprit in viral meningitis. Bacterial infections that can lead to meningitis include staphylococcal infections, pasteurellosis and sometimes other bacteria. It takes being on antibiotics for a good while to fight the infection.
Avatar f tn Was a lumbar puncture (aka spinal tap) performed? There is a condition called Mollaret’s meningitis which is a recurrent viral meningitis. If you are having symptoms of meningitis (stiff neck, headache, fever, etc), you should seek medical attention ASAP. You will need to have a lumbar puncture performed. If it is bacterial, antibiotics would be necessary. Thank you for using the forum, I hope you find this information useful, good luck.
Avatar f tn Can the herpes simplex cause the viral meningitis even if she does not have the genital herpes? Can just being in contact with someone or touching something have the virus enter her blood. She was tested negative for the virus a couple months ago. She was quite sick and had to be given morphine, anit-viral and steroids.
Avatar f tn Just an update...MIL has Viral Meningitis. She finally has the right antibiotics and is now improving rapidly. Her attitude is quite negative about having to have her children care for her, so she is pretty close to normal :) It goes to show that it is important to either be your own advocate, or hopefully have someone to speak up when u can't. To think the hospital would have sent her home had we not put our foot down. Thank you all who support dme and prayed for me.
Avatar f tn I got meningitis 4 yrs ago and suffer from chronic migraines. I have three migraines a week (down from five a week) and I ALWAYS have a headache that never seems to go way. My doctor from infectious disease explained nothing other than I had meningitis. I don't even know if it was viral or bacterial. So my question is why after so long do I still suffer from severe migraines/headaches? Will they ever go away? My pcp's answer to my question is prescribing topamax (spelling?
Avatar n tn it was a viral meningitis. I had a lot of neck pain as well. The ER only did the spinal tap because I had a fever of 104.3 This is not a common illness so doctors will often overlook what is staring them in the face :) My recovery was about 3 months. I do hope you go back to your doctor or the ER right away. It can be fatal if you do not get proper treatment asap. Good Luck!

5884761 tn?1376056000 Everything came negative, healthy as a horse as far as they told me. Noone even suggested viral meningitis for two months now that I am still extremely tired. Until I proposed it the last time and they told me I would be dead but okay, I could consult a neurologist.
Avatar f tn I had viral meningitis in December 05, and was in hospital for 2 weeks the condition was confirmed by the neurologitst having a lumbar puncture. I was so ill I thought I would die, I could not move of the bed the pain in my head was explosive and my eyes hurt so bad. It took me three months to get over this, and until september 05 until I was one hundred percent again.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with viral meningitis at the beginning of February. I spent a few nights in hospital hooked up to IV antibiotics and fluids. I still get headaches and a pressure feeling in my head like everything is very swollen. My neck stiffness has gone and the rash I developed has finally cleared up. I have been on the sick from work for the past 3 weeks.

Avatar n tn When I was almost 2 years old, I was hospitalized for a month with Viral Meningitis. They said it was from an inner ear infection that went undetected, until one morning around 3am I went into convultions from high fever. I went paralyzed from neck down for several weeks. I surprised them all when I came around and slowly had muscle movement. I had to learn toilet training and how to walk all over again.

Avatar n tn Hi again, I was just reading more about why the doctor may have prescribed penicillinV for you when you have "the flu." If he suspected meningitis they will give you penicillin to start with and then if you present with more symptoms such as rash, or stiff neck, light phobia, bad headache in the back of the neck and so forth then you should call the doctor that prescribed the drug or go the ER if he isn't in.
Avatar f tn ve ruled that out and she actually has viral meningitis. We live in a very rural region where mold is common, and have been concerned about the possibility of fungal meningitis as well, though the hospital said they checked for this and it wasn't the case. I'm wondering, how severe can viral meningitis be? My aunt's mind is currently completely gone. She no longer remembers people, or even any new information for more than a second.
Avatar m tn In most cases, there is no specific treatment for viral meningitis. Most people who get viral meningitis completely recover on their own within 7 to 10 days. However, people with meningitis caused by certain viruses such as herpesvirus and influenza, may benefit from treatment with an antiviral medication." http://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/viral.
429949 tn?1224691579 Whether there would be evidence eight months later depends on the type of meningitis. A simple viral infection would likely have completely cleared. But, 9 months later, if there was still signs on LP, I would worry about there being an "ongoing" infection. The signs of meningitis on an LP are, elevated protein, sometimes low glucose, and the presence of more than a couple white cells. From 10 or 20 to many thousands in the really bad ones.
Avatar n tn I am sorry to hear about your son suffering for so long. Possibility of viral meningitis should be looked into by a spinal tap. All these antibiotics could have caused acidity and hence the stomach aches. Maybe antacids should be started and give frequent small meals to combat the acid. Give your son a lactobacillus preparation. Consult a neurologist to rule out meningitis. Take care!
1936550 tn?1348360208 My baby girl has meningitis. They are finding out if its viral or bacterial. Please pray for my baby that its just viral. She will be one month on the 14th. I'm scared for her and have been crying non stop. Its hard waiting for the results. Please everyone pray for my baby.
Avatar n tn Hi, Meningitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, and even as a consequence of certain medications. Bacterial meningitis and certain viral diseases can be deadly, even in people with strong immune systems but in other cases meningitis is a mild disease and may even go unnoticed and does not need any specific treatment. Runny nose and cough can also be apart of allergy. You could just treat it with OTC anti-histamines.
Avatar f tn I never had an official breakout but shortly after I started getting leg pain and sacral pain and the following month after coming back from vacation I got viral meningitis. I researched and found that nerve pain is associated with Herpes and that viral meningitis is also. I had a test done about a week or two after being told last year and it was negative but since I have done a lot of reading and found it might just not have been showing up then.
