Common Questions and Answers about Antibiotics and resistance

antibiotics

Avatar f tn See other recent posts here about antibiotics and the danger (for the individual, and for the rest of us) of stopping meds before the ENTIRE course of treatment is completed.
Avatar m tn In that case your chances of catching anything are slim, furthermore taking antiobiotics for absolutely no reason can increase your resistance to antibiotics. So when/if you REALLY need to take them one day they might not work.
Avatar n tn I read that HIV/AIDS infected individuals are more likely to show resistance to antibiotics in individuals with Campylobacter. My last sexual encounter was around 7 weeks ago and I was tested after 5 weeks for HIV and it came back negative. My question is whether somone could show resistance to antibiotics within the first weeks of exposure or is this more common in more advanced stages of HIV/AIDS?
Avatar m tn So first, that article is from 2016. Resistance has been known for some time now. There has been resistance with gonorrhea for a long time. STDs are not the only infections with this issue. Doctors like to prescribe antibiotics for lots of reasons - presumptively, because patients insist on it and doctors just do it because it moves things along, etc. This is a problem, though, because all the antibiotic use when it isn't needed helps create resistance.
Avatar n tn Short courses of antibiotics have long-term impact on microbial flora of human gut Short courses of antibiotics can leave normal gut bacteria harbouring antibiotic resistance genes for up to two years after treatment, say scientists writing in the latest issue of Microbiology, published on 3 November.
Avatar f tn What about the other points, antibiotic resistance and effectiveness of treatment if i took 250mg and 750mg with 5 hours time interval?
163305 tn?1333668571 Nothing less than a ban on the routine and unnecessary use of antibiotics on livestock and poultry will halt this trend, and ensure that our life-saving medicines can remain effective for generations to come." http://www.commondreams.
Avatar f tn Only a handful of new antibiotics have been developed and brought to market in the past few decades, and it is a race against time to find more, as bacterial infections increasingly evolve into "superbugs" resistant to existing drugs. "Antimicrobial resistance poses a catastrophic threat.
Avatar f tn strain of gonorrhea in Japan in 2008 that was resistant to all recommended antibiotics and warned then that it could transform a once easily treatable infections into a global health threat. "This organism has basically been developing resistance against every medication we've thrown at it," said Dr. Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan, a scientist in the agency's department of sexually transmitted diseases.

640719 tn?1277140030 I talked to the pharmacist and they said with my resistance to macrodatin (not sure of spelling) cipro and levaquin and allergy to penicillin, ceftin, and now batrium, not sure what they can do for me :o I can take Keflex but I'm reading that is most likely not to effective in treating UTI's. I'm sure fear is not helping my UTI sensations. How big of trouble may I be in concerning this situation? What can they do? Any input would be grateful.
Avatar n tn i have been reading about prostatitis, and sounds similar. is there anything to be done other than antibiotics and antifungal cream?
1691275 tn?1322327507 There are no contraindications whatsoever to taking two antibiotics and a strong arguement to continue with the first antibiotic as per doctor's orders and simultaneously take the second. There are slight variants in the way both antibiotics attack replication of bacteria. If you fail to complete the amoxcillin you risk developing an amoxcillan resistant strain. Generally medical practice is not to over-use antibiotics to prevent the development of resistant strains.
Avatar n tn That's not a commonly prescribed medication for stds, and its not on the preferred treatment guidelines. If you had protected sex, you are taking meds you do not need, and I can't give you advice about what to take. It creates resistance, and situations like this are why we have very few drugs to treat gonorrhea now.
Avatar m tn The sore was drained of puss and I have been antibiotics taking them on time and will continue to take them on time until they are gone. My question is: what should we do so that we can continue to have sex without transferring the bacteria to my wife? Obviously we should wait until the cuts are all healed and I complete the rounds of antibiotics. However, everything I have read about mrsa does not discuss how to disinfect healthy skin of staph, only to keep wounds covered.
Avatar m tn t fully kill it with your round of antibiotics. This is also how drug resistance happens. Bugs become smart and start to outsmart the antibiotics. So, I would not just decide to stop the drug on your own. Call your doctor or whomever prescribed the medication. Clinic or whatever. If you can't tolerate the medicine, then so be it but do your best to finish it.
Avatar f tn antibiotic resistance is very real and very dangerous. I'm a fan of not taking any antibiotics without a confirmed infection. I see every single day the effects of multiple drug resistant infections in people and it's not worth taking an antibiotic just in case.
Avatar m tn If you have throbbing at the extraction site, you may have a dry socket: when a blood clot doesn't settle in the socket causing bone to be exposed and very painful. See you dentist for treatment and to check for infection. I don't think resistance to antibiotics should be an issue, but you may need a different antibiotic if the previous med didn't work against the bacteria. Good luck.
1514016 tn?1294925370 I had the oral thrush first and I thought maybe it was because I had my gallbladder removed and might have been from the liquid lortab they gave me for pain. Now I have both the oral and vaginal yeast infection. I don't have insurance anymore so I'm not exactly sure of what to do to get rid of it. Usually, I wouldn't let not having insurance get in the way of my health, but I don't have the money to buy a prescription.
Avatar n tn pylori, eosinophilic esophagitis, and severe acid reflux. Antibiotics, steriods, prevacid, and several other medications were used to no avail. The esophogal lining is severely decreased... Vomiting and stomach upset are prevalent. I'm looking for dos and donts for these conditions and any successful treatments. Thank you!
Avatar m tn I must say that because of the damage that chlamydia can cause in the female reproductive tract if it ascends into the fallopian tubes (eg infertility) and because the antibiotics used to treat the condition are so simple and UNlikely to cause side effects or reactions, I think that the risk-benefit ratio strongly points to taking the antibiotics. I hope this answer is of some help!
