His left kidney has atrophied and the right is failing. She is now on a drip and antibiotics, renal failure this time possibly an acute episode triggered by infection. I know he will always need extra care, but my little man wants to run and play with everyone else. He is currently on antibiotics, anti-nausea, prilosec, sub q fluids, and a renal diet. There may be more, but I'm so frazzled I can't remember right now. What can I do to increase his chances of survival/longevity?
I believe that maybe your vet could try some of the other medications as well as the IV fluids and antibiotics. Antibiotics would help if there was a case of Pyelonephritis, but not necessarily if the kidney failure had been caused by ingesting toxins.
You're mainly looking at three things being elevated in the bloodwork: Blood Urea Nitrogen (of BUN)....Creatinine...and Phosphorus. It depends how highly elevated these are, and whether medications will affect those levels.

m am not a doctor, but I have experienced CHF and am at statge 5 kidney failure, also known as End Stage Renal Disease. I have been through the nausea and vomitting, and severe swelling from the CHF, and now I do dialysis 6 days a week.
Considering where I was a year ago, I feel healthy.

But my fathers dog is 8 1/2 years old terrier mix Chancho was diagnosed with diabetes today and renal failure. I do not know the numbers of his test, but prior to being diagnosed he was real lathrgic vomiting urinating and popping in the house it was uncontrollable. Today when my father took him to the vet he couldn't walk, vet gave him iv for being dehydrated, anti nausea shot, insulin and antibiotics. Said he will re test him in 2 days sent him home with antibiotic and insulin.
Renal anomalies could be responsible for decreased or deranged renal function and may lead to renal failure. One working kidney is enough for normal functions of the body. It would be difficult to comment if your other symptoms could be related. I would suggest discussing the situation and the suggested management plan in detail with your treating nephrologist.
