anorexia

Avatar m tn Hello. I'm new and terrified for a friend who says she's been diagnosed with Lyme disease. At first, I had no reason to believe otherwise. However, I'm not sure now. She has lost an extreme amount of weight. A couple of years ago when this all began, she was losing weight quickly and couldn't eat anything unless it was pureed. Without going into all the details, she presented all the signs of anorexia and still does.
Avatar f tn t eat because you think you are fat, or you have a strong fear of gaining weight. Though technically, part of the clinical diagnosis of Anorexia Nervosa is losing 15 percent or more of what your normal body weight should be, you do not need to be super thin in order to have an eating disorder. Most of what an eating disorder, such as Anorexia, consists of is the emotional/mental aspect..
Avatar n tn More than the weight per se is the dramatic weight loss and the behaviors that surround her eating habits, along with the medical worries. Seeking help is not up to her - it's important that you arrange help. Enlist the assistance of her pediatrician in this regard. Serious medical complications, including death, can arise from anorexic behavior and it is mandatory that she be treated.
Avatar m tn Yes I did take some mood stabilizers in the past that caused weight loss (what that term means, the term anoxeria nervosa is what is used to describe the psychiatric disability people might be more familiar with). Some medications have that potential more than others but each person responds differently to each medication. If you have had any unexplained weight loss after starting a specific medication or at any time it would be essential to discuss this with your psychiatrist.
Avatar n tn If you have cut down on fat and carbohydrates then this can explain the weight loss. There are many causes like worms in stool, depression, anorexia nervosa, AIDS, cancers especially colon cancers, drug abuse, infections and loss of appetite. Loss of appetite can again be due to certain medications, drug abuse, depression, AIDS, acute and chronic infections, cancers and hypothyroidism. Either you do not eat well or there is increased metabolism as in hyperthyroid states, HIV, cancer etc.
18663 tn?1198171815 The signs you are reporting are all possible symptoms of anorexia such as, rapid weight loss, intense fear of getting fat, being less than 85% of ideal body weight; distorted body image, restrictive eating, possible purging (through vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, excessive exercise).
2217782 tn?1394363972 ll probably average 1/2 pound a week weight loss, vs. 1 pound a week if you diet and workout, but it sounds like it'll be a lot healthier for you to do it gradually. Good luck with everything!
Avatar m tn Hello, Weight loss is one of the side effects of taking Accutane and it may cause anorexia as well. Eat a healthy nutritious diet and consult your doctor if weight loss is a major problem. You may need to be put on some other medication for acne rather than Accutane. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor.
Avatar f tn If she is only drinking Gatorade, that would explain the weight loss. The question is why is she only drinking Gatorade. Anorexia comes to mind, but I would definitely be getting her to a doctor.
Avatar n tn I donot know anything about anorexia but I do know about OCD. I also know Lexapro works well for me. Our body is made up of vitams and minerals along with all else. The brain has many chemicals. Loss of certain chemicals can be replaced by mood stabilizers or SSRI's which are used to replace serotonin. I am not a doctor but my OCD symptoms have lessened, almost nonexsistent by the use of antiphyscotic drugs to correct the chemical imbalance I have.
Avatar f tn Research shows that females diagnosed with anorexia nervosa had their polycystic ovary disease symptoms prior to weight loss. Their body mass index was higher when their menses stopped. In addition, their LH and estrogen levels were higher than those adolescents with anorexia only. PCOS occurs in 10% of females during reproductive age. The cause is still unknown. Avatar n tn Is this free? NO!! I have temporal wasting and nobody has been knowledgeable enough to tell me how to reverse it. I have spoken to about a ten nurses and even seen my doctor..all of whom had no clue what to tell me. I feel really defeated because I have been trying to add more protein, calories, and carbs to my diet, but with little results. I look like I have Anorexia, TB, or HIV when I don't!! What should I do? Do you even know?
Avatar f tn Anorexia is known to cause hair loss. Hands shaking may be due to purging. To be considered bulimia there needs to be bingeing episodes and compensatory behaviors, such as, vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative abuse, etc. The following is the DSM IV TR criteria for Bulimia Nervosa, purging and nonpurging type: Recurrent episodes of binge eating characterized by both: Eating, in a discrete period of time (e.g.
1938479 tn?1325705620 If Arnold Schwarzenegger was to use a BMI (weight vs height) chart while bodybuilding, it would have classified him as obese. Another way to look at fat versus muscles is that a cubic inch of muscle will weigh more than a cubic inch of fat. Muscle is about 18 percent more dense than fat. So a better question is am I in shape or do i need to convert more areas of fat to muscle? With that said, here is a weight chart that should only be used to give you an idea, so don't take it as gospel.
Avatar n tn !!!!! People are less likely to say much about weight loss and someone as young as yourself, because there is danger of Anorexia. The weight loss you're talking about sounds like you're crossing into the area of Anorexia. I have heard about the trend with young people, especially girls, thinking that Anorexia is a "cool" or "in" thing. Well, it isn't. People die from this mental illness. Please, concentrate on being fit and healthy.
Avatar f tn I'm a 16 year old female and I am barely ever hungry. I do feel hunger only in the morning and around 2-3 hours after I eat breakfast. I usually eat two handfuls of cereal with milk. When it comes to dinner, I'll take a few bites and I'll immediately feel full and nauseous. However I can eat a lot of sweets and salty things like crisps without a problem. A doctor told me that this is anorexia but I don't want to lose weight or feel bad about my body or anything like that.

Avatar f tn Anorexia can lead to many complications and I hope that you are having your daughter treated for this problem, Anorexia is not due to any type of medication but a deeper underlying problem. I would certainly doubt any connection to a breast abnormality at age 11 and I think you need to seek the advice of some sort of support group that deals with anorexia. This is a dangerous condition that can lead to death if not addressed by the proper professionals and reversed as soon as possible.

Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone has had weight loss completely unexplained. In 2011 I was pregnant with my second son and I lost quite a bit of weight and was concerned but the doctors weren't since my son seemed to be doing fine. By the end of that pregnancy I had only gained 11lbs back of what I had lost. As soon as I had him I dropped the 11lbs and then some. I continued dropping weight but since I wasn't pregnant I decided maybe it was a good thing, since I was overweight to start with.
Avatar f tn Hypothyroidism is usually a weight gain issue not a weight loss issue. Most people find it difficult to lose weight even when excersing when hypo. Are you sure she is hypo? I know from my own personal experience I lost a ton of weight and actually was anorexic but not through starving myself, I ate like a horse! I had undiagnosed hyperthyroidism. It seems that if she had no period for all that time, it could well be hyperthyroidism.
Avatar n tn I have not had my period for about 7 months, probably because of some weight loss, (i am not pregnant, because i'm not sexually active) So, if I don't try to get my period back will my reproductive organs be damaged?
