Androgen in females

Common Questions and Answers about Androgen in females

1208452 tn?1266336929 The hair growth or hirsuitism could be due to the higher testosterone level than is normal in females. The level can be high in androgen resistance, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, ovarian cancer, prolactin secreting tumors and polycystic ovary disease. You need to consult an endocrine specialist to rule out these problems. Treatment can be laser removal, hormone therapy and local creams. Hope this helps. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage.
Avatar f tn A main underlying problem with PCOS is a hormonal imbalance. In women with PCOS, the ovaries make more androgens than normal. Androgens are male hormones that females also make. High levels of these hormones affect the development and release of eggs during ovulation. Researchers also think insulin may be linked to PCOS. Insulin is a hormone that controls the change of sugar, starches, and other food into energy for the body to use or store.
Avatar f tn in 2004 i had a laser facial hair removal treatment that didnt work at all. actually the hair got only worst and it left me with black spots that wont go untill now. and the worst part is i tried all the possibles ways of hair removal that doesnt get my skin to irritate and i couldnt find anything. the result: dark spots resulting from the laser treatment, spots from acne, and spots from irritated skin after every hair removal procedure.
Avatar n tn It is pretty common in Mediterranean cultures for females to have more hair than females of other cultures. On some days, I can deal with the fact that I have Hirsutism, on other days, I feel really depressed and alone. A few weeks ago I gathered the courage to go to my PCP and tell him about my condition. He automatically sent me to the lab for blood work. He said the tests would be extensive. Yesterday I went to his office and he reviewed the results carefully. Luckily, I do not have PCOS.
1165843 tn?1263018569 The treatment consists of topical and oral antibiotics, tretinoin, oral contraceptives in females and Intralesional corticosteroid injections. Very severe cases may need excision and drainage. Also the treatment has to be taken for a long time so that relapses do not occur. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist.
Avatar n tn Dermatologists have found the most effective topical prescription gel to be Differin especially when used in conjunction with oral antibiotics or an anti-androgen contraceptive pill like Diane35 (females only). Also check out our Acne forum.
5274485 tn?1385860167 Some states take developmental disorders in BOTH girls and boys very seriously. I am thankful to live in one of those states. Despite this I do have to say that my daughter is the only girl her age at the clinic where she receives therapy and the only one in her autism class at school in Kindergarten. There is absolutely something to be said about girls needing more dxs.
Avatar n tn A few questions....1. Where do genital warts most commonly appear in females? I know it is possible, but is the mons pubis a common area for them to come up? I have white little patches of skin I just noticed recently there. Also 2. Are genital warts able to be seen even if skin is flat? The only time I can really see these bumps is if I pinch the skin together. All they really look like are white patches of skin. 3. How do genital warts feel to touch?
Avatar m tn Fast forward to now... I have experienced lactation (no tumors, no blood in milk, and Prolactin level was only 4 NG/ML) and chronic infections (shingles, UTIs, and yeast infections). I went to a dermatologist for severe acne and melasma on my face (dark discoloration on cheeks and forehead). My blood work results showed elevated testosterone(53 H total and 6.6 H free), elevated ANDROSTENEDIONE (260 NG/DL), low RBC 3.63 L), and SQUAMOUS EPI CELLS (6-10 H). Insulin was 3.

Avatar n tn Female acne patients will benefit from taking an anti-androgen or combined oral contraceptive pill such as Diane35 (called Dianette in the UK) or Ortho Tri-cyclen (called Cilest in the UK). It doesn't matter if she is not sexually active, doctors commonly prescribe the pill to treat acne as well as for contraception. This is because androgens (male hormones found in both male and female bodies) are responsible for stimulating the sebaceous glands and the hairs which grow from them. Eloise.
Avatar n tn Hi. Oral antibiotics are widely prescribed for acne. It is unlikely this medicine has damaged your liver, but ask your doctor for a liver function test if you are concerned. Alternative treatments include topical retinoids such as Differin, topical antibiotics such as Duac, or oral tetracyclines such as Oxytetracycline. Discuss these with your doctor. You don't state your gender, but female acne patients will benefit from taking an anti-androgen contraceptive pill such as Yasmin or Diane35.
Avatar m tn i am a guy. but i there's a small lump in my right areola(??) sometimes it's painful when touch. do men get breast cancer? ... will the lump eventually disappear or need to be surgically removed. i appreciate any professional opinions.
1332551 tn?1275658929 Acne is caused by high androgen levels. Androgen levels are commonly raised during times of hormonal change including puberty and after delivery of a baby. Face washes alone will not heal acne. Your doctor can prescribe a course of oral antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline 250mg twice daily and a topical retinoid cream called Differin (adapalene). Female acne patients may also benefit from taking an anti-androgen contraceptive pill like Yasmin or Diane35.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm taking spironolactone 50mg per day + Brenda 35 pill & minoxidil 1mg capsule form each day all for fphl that started in my early 30s after having my only child.... I'm tired of the weight staying on & want to stop Brenda pill as it makes my periods very heavy, makes my face all brown & blotchy & isn't letting me lose weight, is there another pill that's suitable with the anti androgen (spiro) that I'm already using?
Avatar m tn Can anyone tell me what causes me to out of the blue once in a while, I get a hot feeling all over, and it is scary, like I think it is is a stroke, but a few minutes later, I am ok again, but scared that it was a bad sign that something is wrong. I asked my doc over the phone after describing the symptoms what it was, only to be told She did not know. Is there anyone here that have had this happen to them? How do I treat it if possible?
Avatar m tn Temporary hair removal can be achieved through depilation or epilation. Drugs like androgen receptor blockers, androgen suppressing agents and 5 alpha reductase inhibitors are also used. Permanent means of hair removal by electrolysis and laser treatment are also useful. I would suggest you to consult a dermatologist and discuss all the pros and cons of these methods so that the best treatment for you can be decided.
Avatar n tn Female acne patients can take an anti-androgen medicine called Spironolactone and/or an anti-androgen contraceptive pill such as Diane35 or Yasmin/Yaz. Severe acne which does not respond to conventional treatments may warrant Oral Isotretinoin. Unfortunately, you will have to avoid direct exposure to UV light (sun/sunbed) whilst using any of these medicines as severe sunburn or hyperpigmentation may occur. Best Wishes, Eloise.
Avatar m tn Hirsutism is defined as the excessive hair growth in an androgen dependent pattern where hair growth in women is usually minimal or absent (eg: face, chest, and areolaeas) as a result of increased androgen production, increased skin sensitivity to androgens, or both.
9706712 tn?1405635984 Is it just me or are females becoming more and more scandalous for the wrong reasons? I swear they're worse than dogs ! Earlier I had went to a gathering with my family, my boyfriend came and not to brag but my boyfriend is really good looking, as soon as I saw a group of females staring at him I already knew what was going to happen . I don't mind people looking, he's mine.
Avatar m tn I know laser treatment would be most beneficial but cannot afford it at the moment. What can I do in the meantime to help prevent ingrown hair and pimples in the hair follicle? I also was prescribed spironolactone for the hirsitism to block the androgen receptors but I dont want to disturb K levels and get hyperkalemia. Should I worry about K levels or if a low dose is prescribed it wouldnt be a problem?
Avatar f tn Are you using a combined oral contraceptive pill in addition to Accutane? Acne in adult females is often caused by a hormonal imbalance such as raised androgen levels. A pill such as Yaz, Yasmin or Diane35 (called Dianette in the UK) will help. Are you using any medication which could be making your acne worse? (Oral or topical steroids/ progesterone only pill, depot shot, hormonal IUD) ? Have you had your hormone levels tested to rule out an underlying cause for your acne such as PCOS?
Avatar n tn After 5 months of washing my face once a day like I have in the past, I ultimately fell in love with the Shielo Complexion Scrub , I believe it works just as good as Pro Active for less cost. I follow up the scrub using use products with witch hazel or tea tree oil to soothe my skin and keep my face from becoming overly dry.
5274485 tn?1385860167 Girls with Autism have different symptoms in contrast to boys. Females with autism tend to withhold their symptoms and keep quiet. They are not as aggressive as boys are. Females are more likely to want more friends and play with dolls.
