I was very sick about a month ago and my ammonia level had gone up to twice what is normal. The dr always tells me that my liver enzymes are good. I want to know what stage I am in and what damage is done to my liver. I heard that your enzymes can be fine but damage is still happening. I asked about a biopsy and he said they don't do that anymore. This is the Veterans Administration Doctors. He said it was not just the VA that stopped doing them.
I have watched his diet no salt, fresh veggies and fruit, he uses honey for sugar and olive oil for butter. The local hospitals here in W Palm Beach said it is to dangerous for them to a biopsy because of his platelets-they tried to increase them but couldn't. I know he is angry because I just started treatments, first shot last week. He is driving me crazy with his attitude, he doesn't think he has one. He forgets and he is mean. I feel bad because, he has noone else to help him.

just avoid henna dyes and make sure your hairstylists (or you) uses ammonia-free dyes as well...both of those absorb into the blood stream more readily than other dyes and are obviously best avoided during pregnancy :-). And as long as the salon is well-ventilated, shouldn't be an issue.
Other than that, go for it! I've dyed my hair with 2 of my 3 pregnancies with no problems...it can really give you a pick-me-up in those mid-pregnancy blahs!

Since I've worked there we have always used glass cleaner to clean the paint off the desk and our hands. I didnt know this until today but the cleaner we use has ammonia in it. Patients with liver disease are unable to process or detoxify ammonia so that ammonia levels can reach dangerously high levels. This is coupled by increased ammonia production of colonic bacteria, especially if one is constipated or has an irregular bowel movement. High protein intake can also lead to an incresed ammonia production. I suggest you talk about these possibilities with your doctors.
My 1 1/2 year old 50 lb female standard poodle has had her urine smelling like fish but some times like ammonia. She acts fine, eats and drinks well. Seems that the sooner they get him on the list, the less $$ it would cost them and the better chance he has to survive longer. Yes it does. High levels of ammonia cause hepatic encephalopathy which in turn can cause confusion, sleepiness and forgetfulness. There are medications to help lower those levels. Speak to your hep doc.
