Avatar n tn We are accustomed to dealing with personality issues from his ammonia levels. He was recently diagnosed with moderate Alzs although we think he has been undiagnosed for years. He is currently hospitalized and physically restrained because he became combative in the nursing home. His ammonia level was elevated but has come down. However, the agitation/aggression hasn't changed. The dr started him on namenda last week. Has anyone seen this kind of aggression from namenda?? HELP!!
1491677 tn?1288462420 I have tried bottled water, letting water sit in the frig, yet the only water she will drink is the water I mix in her gravy train food. I am glad I can get her to drink this much water but I know she needs to be drinking more. It hasn't affected her health so far and I would like to take care of this problem before it does. What should I do??
Avatar f tn Since i am mostly vegetarian, and only break this rule with fish a few times a month, i was careful to note that the ammonia smell only occurred after eating fish. My physician tested me and found that i definitely had an ammonia buildup and i should stop eating animal protein. Once i dropped eating fish the problem went away. My physician told me that the ammonia buildup can lead to encephalopathy - brain fog - that can be very damaging, so i'm sticking to a vegetarian diet.
Avatar f tn Hello my not herb has cirrhosis of the liver. And that ammonia level isn't something to play with. I had to bring her to the hospital and her levels were 177...after had she's been having trouble with eating holding things Can't walk.
1008841 tn?1293598960 In terms of diet, I believe you should be avoiding as much salt as possible, and at least for the short term, reduce animal proteins to avoid complications of ammonia toxicity. Try to limit your protein intake to things like legumes and soy products; they are less likely to metabolize into ammonia in your gut. Protein is an important component of your diet though; be sure to confirm any info you gather here with your doctor.
Avatar m tn Hello I noticed your reply to wildturkey regarding the sweat smelling perspiration. if you are eating allot of protein is this dangerous to have the ammonia smell. I do allot of cardio and frequently have this odor as I am working out. I do eat allot of protein since I am a diabetic. and carbs make my sugers sky rocket. Do you have any suggestions?
Avatar n tn According to what you posted, he was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome - which is a genetic disorder. There is no cure. From the symptoms you describe, that seems to fit. Other than physical therapy and other care that is similar, I don't really have any other ideas.
Avatar m tn We are using high doses a Vitamin C to help flush the brain of the ammonia. The blood levels came back into normal range with in 36 hours but the cause is undetermined.
Avatar m tn I am taking Kristalose to relieve the build-up of ammonia in my blood due to hep-c. My doctor wants to see 4-5 bowel movements a day. He prescribed 2 - 20mg packs at breakfast, 2 at lunch and 1 at dinner. Some days I have 6-8 before dinner and since he does not want me to have more than that I will skip the dinner dose. My question is - If I have a movement the first thing the following morning - prior to taking anything - is that movement still removing ammonia 12-14 after the prior dose?
Avatar f tn He advised me to stay away from any fat-food. He warned me not to eat any sort of meat and fish(except smoked fish). The only thing that am worry is stopping meat/fish in my meal. Pls is d doctor right by telling me not to eat fish/meat?
Avatar m tn s too high a dose, and why are you choosing B6 in high doses for cholesterol? Fish oil will raise your HDL immediately as it is HDL (or flax oil or hemp seed oil). B6 toxicity is nothing to fool around with, and remember, B6 is in balance with B12 and folic acid, so long-term use of just one of these will throw the others out of balance. I'd find another treatment plan.
Avatar f tn I agree with what Hector wrote. I would add that one still should try to limit the amount of protein to reasonable amounts. To eat what is considered "normal" by average American diet could lead one to consuming way more than is needed or healthy. In general serving sizes in the USA are too big, contain too much fat, salt, etc.
Avatar m tn s important to stay away from red meat -- vegetable proteins and fish are the best sources of protein to help control ammonia. My husband has replaced much of his red-meat consumption with peanut butter, sardines, beans, and such. He personally abhors tofu, so for him, it's lots of nuts (almonds, cashews, etc.) and occasional cheese or eggs or ice cream as a treat. When he suffers from poor appetite his hep doc encourages protein drinks to ensure adequate protein intake. Hope that helps.
238010 tn?1420406272 But I just read in another post that cheese and peanut butter (among other things) may contribute to higher ammonia levels, which in turn may cause brain fog. Any suggestions on what fats to take with riba, both in the morning and evening? And how much fat is necessary each time?
Avatar m tn In patients with advanced cirrhosis, the liver is no longer able to metabolize the ammonia and convert it to urea so the ammonia builds up the in body producing and travels to the person's brain with psychological and other effects.
Avatar m tn Ammonia levels in the blood rise when the liver is not able to convert ammonia to urea. This may be caused by cirrhosis or severe hepatitis. Since you are on this forum I assume you have hep c? Are you experiencing the effects of toxic buildup in your blood? Hepatic encephalopathy.
Avatar m tn Lactulose is considered the first-line therapy for HE. The usual oral dose of lactulose is about 15-30 ml given twice a day to induce 2-3 soft bowel movements daily. Abdominal bloating and a sweet taste in the mouth are the principal adverse effects associated with normal doses of lactulose. Xifaxan/Rifaximin works in a different way. It's an antibiotic that reduces the amount of ammonia produced in the gut. (It doesn't draw fluid into the bowel like lactulose or kristalose does.
Avatar m tn The premise of most pathophysiologic theories involves the accumulation of ammonia in the central nervous system, producing alterations of neurotransmission that affect consciousness and behavior. These ammonia toxicity theories have been supported by studies demonstrating increased ammonia levels in patients with both fulminant hepatic failure and chronic liver disease.
Avatar m tn DETOXIFYING AMMONIA Ammonia toxicityIn part 2 of AMMONIA TOXICITY we are going to find out what we can do to remove ammonia from our body, both by supporting the organs involved in processing and disposing of it, and by taking supplements with an affinity for removing ammonia. We have seen that there are 3 organ systems in the body that produce and/or deal with ammonia: the liver, the kidneys and the intestines.
317787 tn?1473358451 While I am UND hoping to be heading to SVR I realize that I need to take the Lactulose for now until my liver can filter toxins a little better than it is doing right now. My question is, are there are other things I can do in addition to the lactulose? Would a high fiber diet help?...or is it only the lactulose that removes the ammonia? I appreciate any advice. I see the doctor on May 1st and will also talk to him.
1183618 tn?1277365106 Vitamin D is available through our foods - Fortified milk, breakfast cereals, egg yolks, fatty fish, and fish oils. Sit at a window with the sun shining in for about 1/2 hour (few times a week) and that will help you get enough Vitamin D. Suggest you stop taking the vitamin D supplements, restrict your intake of calcium, and see your MD.

Avatar f tn Not all omega 6 oils are created equal. I don't know why you're taking evening primrose oil, you don't state what you're trying to accomplish. Some take it for female hormonal balance and some take it for depression. It is somewhat high in GLA, a very beneficial fat, though borage oil has more. But it is very effective for women with hormonal disruptions, so if you need it for that and it's working, then I wouldn't worry about the Omega 6 portion.
Avatar n tn increased ammonia in urine - occurring as a result of dehydration or a bladder infection, infection with trichomonas vaginalis, hypermethioninemia, and Trimethylaminuria. As the last two are uncommon conditions, it would be better to rule out the initial two causes. If your urine is very pale yellow, it is unlikely that you are dehydrated. However, it would not hurt to ensure that fluid intake is maintained over 2000 ml.
Avatar m tn And drink more water in order to remove more toxicity of food from body. And try not to eat pizza anymore as you are allergic to it.Therefore, trying eat rice due to the function of removal on toxicity it can be.
Avatar m tn So, I would guess strong vinegar is more related to urine which has ammonia in it. Maybe you leaked a little urine or it was hard wiping it away with your period?
Avatar m tn Ammonia and zinc levels are measured from blood samples. They must be asked for. They are not common blood test that are performed routinely. Ammonia is listed as Ammonia on my blood tests. The normal range is 7-35 UMOL/L. Since you have some blood work you may want to look at his Platelet count, INR, Bilirubin, and Creatinine. This can help give you an idea of your husband's liver ability to function. NOTE: Ammonia levels don't always correlate with HE. Or the Grade of HE.
