Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia toxicity to brain

ammonia

Avatar n tn According to what you posted, he was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome - which is a genetic disorder. There is no cure. From the symptoms you describe, that seems to fit. Other than physical therapy and other care that is similar, I don't really have any other ideas.
Avatar f tn Hello my not herb has cirrhosis of the liver. And that ammonia level isn't something to play with. I had to bring her to the hospital and her levels were 177...after had she's been having trouble with eating holding things Can't walk.
Avatar n tn He has been in the hospital 3 times in the last month with high ammonia levels. He was just told he needed to be on a no protein diet and is taking the lactulose. The last time he was in the hospital his ammonia level was 250. He was not responding to anyone and it mimicked a stroke. He received IV therapy and a blood transfusion at this time also. Would increasing his lactulose on the onset of increased confusion (he is always slightly confused now) help clear some more of the ammonia out?
Avatar f tn An untreated urea cycle disorder results in elevations of ammonia, which in turn causes changes in the brain, causing brain swelling, seizures, coma, and death. For someone who has recovered from the hyperammonemia, residua of damage affects cognitive function. Untreated, elevations of certain chemicals in the brain cause headaches, speech problems, and other problems with executive function.
Avatar n tn A similar challenge arises in studies of the effects of chronic marijuana use on brain function. Brain imaging studies in chronic users tend to show some consistent alterations, but their connection to impaired cognitive functioning is far from clear. This uncertainty may stem from confounding factors such as other drug use, residual drug effects, or withdrawal symptoms in long-term chronic users. From the N.I.D.A.
Avatar n tn its a condition known as encephalopathy - if its due to a cirrhotic liver its referred to as hepatic encephalopathy - when the liver is unable to function normally - it cant properly break down proteins all the way - the result is a build up of ammonia in the system - this impairs cognitive function - also referred to as brain fog
Avatar m tn Some experts believe that HCV itself may affect the central nervous system, or that the virus may alter or stimulate the immune system in ways that impact the brain. In addition, “brain fog” may be related to fatigue, lack of sleep, stress, depression, or side effects of interferon. But in people without advanced cirrhosis, the liver is usually still able to process toxins and blood usually still flows well through the liver.
Avatar n tn I believe I can keep this liver if I am totally committed to diet, exercise and the small amount of meds the Doctor has me take. My main concern now is getting rid of the ammonia in my brain due to build up of toxins. Any one else have that problem?
190885 tn?1333025891 I am assuming you have cirrhosis? (I have a list of cirrhotics but I know it doesn't include everyone with cirrhosis here). Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and brain fog are two different conditions. "Brain fog" has nothing to do with ammonia levels. Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.
1491677 tn?1288462420 I have tried bottled water, letting water sit in the frig, yet the only water she will drink is the water I mix in her gravy train food. I am glad I can get her to drink this much water but I know she needs to be drinking more. It hasn't affected her health so far and I would like to take care of this problem before it does. What should I do??
317787 tn?1473358451 While I am UND hoping to be heading to SVR I realize that I need to take the Lactulose for now until my liver can filter toxins a little better than it is doing right now. My question is, are there are other things I can do in addition to the lactulose? Would a high fiber diet help?...or is it only the lactulose that removes the ammonia? I appreciate any advice. I see the doctor on May 1st and will also talk to him.
Avatar m tn DETOXIFYING AMMONIA Ammonia toxicityIn part 2 of AMMONIA TOXICITY we are going to find out what we can do to remove ammonia from our body, both by supporting the organs involved in processing and disposing of it, and by taking supplements with an affinity for removing ammonia. We have seen that there are 3 organ systems in the body that produce and/or deal with ammonia: the liver, the kidneys and the intestines.
Avatar n tn It will depend on your ammonia levels which a blood test will reveal. You need to get to 3 good bowel movememnts a day to keep blood ammonia down, which is the largest cause of brain fog. If you treat for hep C with SOC you should also see a drop in this problem as your liver returns to normal function and enymes levels. The lactulose does work, but I prefer a good diet because the lactulose or Inulin both way make everyone very gas laden a bloated.....toot toot. .
Avatar f tn Other wastes can contribute to changes in mental function and consciousness, and brain levels of ammonia may be much higher than blood levels. This can make correlation of patient symptoms to ammonia blood levels difficult. Not drinking and a good diet for the liver will help with many symptoms. I stopped drinking completely over a year ago and the last few endoscopies I haven't needed banding. I hope this is helpful and good luck.
Avatar f tn I don't know where the previous poster got her information from but she is very wrong. There Definitely isn't any risk of downs syndrome, that is a genetic condition due to am extra chromosome, it cannot be prevented or caused. As for killing your baby or brain damage, that's not true either, it's not recommended to dye your hair in the first trimester but you are 36 weeks and it's fine to dye your hair.
Avatar m tn Hey Tony, Check out Leaky Brain Syndrome, a condition where there's an accumulation of Ammonia in the brain because of a compromised Blood Brain barrier. A knowledgeable Holistic Practitioner in Autonomous Response Testing can verify this with a vial of Ammonia placed over various points of your head. Just do a search. It might be wise to rule this out as it only takes minutes.
Avatar m tn We are using high doses a Vitamin C to help flush the brain of the ammonia. The blood levels came back into normal range with in 36 hours but the cause is undetermined.
Avatar n tn Some people with Stage 4 (cirrhosis) can develop excess accumulation of ammonia due to compromised liver function, which can in turn cause confusion and disorientation. Damage to the liver caused by hep c can lead to too much ammonia in the blood which then affects the brain, a condition called encephalopathy.
Avatar n tn After being on topiramate for 3 days, I had a general feeling of confusion, disorientation, trouble with my memory, and trouble concentrating. When I went to the doctor and got a blood test it was said that my ammonia levels were abnormally high (if I remember correctly it was just over 200).
1008841 tn?1293598960 In terms of diet, I believe you should be avoiding as much salt as possible, and at least for the short term, reduce animal proteins to avoid complications of ammonia toxicity. Try to limit your protein intake to things like legumes and soy products; they are less likely to metabolize into ammonia in your gut. Protein is an important component of your diet though; be sure to confirm any info you gather here with your doctor.
1475202 tn?1536270977 t necessarily corresponding with HE or the degree of HE but is is a very convenient and easy test to perform to confirm HE. Ammonia is obviously much easier to measure than neurological function. Cognitive performance tests are complex and expensive tests to measure impairment of brain function and there still isn't an agreed upon standard at this time. Of course this assumes the patient in not in a stupor or coma and can take a test.
Avatar m tn These chemical remain in the blood and eventually enter the brain, causing a variety of disturbances with brain function. The toxin most easily identified is ammonia. Symptoms: Fatigue, sleepiness, confusion, depression, irritability, personality changes, forgetfulness, slurred speech, tremors (shakes), and problems with balance may occur. As the condition worsens, patients become more sleepy and eventually lapse into a coma.
Avatar f tn sorry i hav no idea on ammonia etc i am wanting to know more now. why do we get ammonia build up?does every1 with hep c hav to get tested regulary?
1654058 tn?1407159066 Dehydration from diuretic therapy and diarrhea, infection, some medications, and progression of liver disease can all lead to kidney failure, which in turn leads to decreased clearance of urea, ammonia, and other toxins that can contribute to encephalopathy. • Other factors: A rise of blood pH (alkalosis), which often results from diuretics and resulting dehydration, may facilitate entry of ammonia into the brain and exacerbate encephalopathy. What are the symptoms of HE?
