Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia toxicity stroke

Avatar f tn she has continued to take the Lactolose for the past two weeks but today her ammonia level is 150. I would like to find out how high ammonia level can go before it is considered toxic and will cause her to go into a coma? I am also wondering in end stage cirrhosis will the lactolose eventually be uneffective in bringing down the ammonia levels? My final question is what kind of life expectancy is there when the cirrohsis remains at that level?
Avatar n tn According to what you posted, he was diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome - which is a genetic disorder. There is no cure. From the symptoms you describe, that seems to fit. Other than physical therapy and other care that is similar, I don't really have any other ideas.
408795 tn?1324935675 As I mentioned in a prior posts I am an ex-IV user and I have a question about toxicity. At the end of my using days I had a wake up call, it was in September 2003, I was using alot of illegal drugs. I had been taking loads of valium unprescribed and I did a dime, yes a dime bag of H. I don't like putting this out there but it's really the only way I can get to my question.
Avatar n tn Saturday a week ago i went to visit her and she could not move. I thought she had a stroke but the doctors are saying it is because her ammonia level in her liver is 178. It comes down but goes back up and she is not getting any better. She has been seen by GI, Neroligist, Cancer doctors and noone can tell me what is happening. She has been tested for hepatis and it was negative. Can you give any advice?
Avatar n tn He has been in the hospital 3 times in the last month with high ammonia levels. He was just told he needed to be on a no protein diet and is taking the lactulose. The last time he was in the hospital his ammonia level was 250. He was not responding to anyone and it mimicked a stroke. He received IV therapy and a blood transfusion at this time also. Would increasing his lactulose on the onset of increased confusion (he is always slightly confused now) help clear some more of the ammonia out?
325086 tn?1217971180 Lactulose may be given to prevent intestinal bacteria from creating ammonia, and as a laxative to evacuate blood from the intestines. Neomycin may also be used to reduce ammonia production by intestinal bacteria. Rifaximin, a new antibiotic, is also effective in hepatic encephalopathy.
1008841 tn?1293598960 In terms of diet, I believe you should be avoiding as much salt as possible, and at least for the short term, reduce animal proteins to avoid complications of ammonia toxicity. Try to limit your protein intake to things like legumes and soy products; they are less likely to metabolize into ammonia in your gut. Protein is an important component of your diet though; be sure to confirm any info you gather here with your doctor.
Avatar m tn The premise of most pathophysiologic theories involves the accumulation of ammonia in the central nervous system, producing alterations of neurotransmission that affect consciousness and behavior. These ammonia toxicity theories have been supported by studies demonstrating increased ammonia levels in patients with both fulminant hepatic failure and chronic liver disease.
317787 tn?1473358451 or is it only the lactulose that removes the ammonia? I appreciate any advice. I see the doctor on May 1st and will also talk to him.
Avatar m tn They are not common blood test that are performed routinely. Ammonia is listed as Ammonia on my blood tests. The normal range is 7-35 UMOL/L. Since you have some blood work you may want to look at his Platelet count, INR, Bilirubin, and Creatinine. This can help give you an idea of your husband's liver ability to function. NOTE: Ammonia levels don't always correlate with HE. Or the Grade of HE. The most accurate way to diagnose HE is based on behavior changes.
Avatar f tn t remember who anyone is. Her ammonia level is 84. What does all of this mean? will she ever be able to remember who anyone is again if her ammonia level goes back down or does this mean that her liver has gotten so bad that it's just giving up?
374652 tn?1494811435 Monitoring of food consumption, gain in body weight and physical observations did not reveal any treatment-related toxicity in any of the group of rats. Terminal autopsy also did not reveal any signs of toxicity. Further, no significant alterations in relative organ weight, serum biochemistry and urinalysis were observed up to 1% lactulose supplementation level. The results suggest that supplementation of lactulose in the diet does not produce any toxicity at the doses tested.
Avatar m tn The premise of most pathophysiologic theories involves the accumulation of ammonia in the central nervous system, producing alterations of neurotransmission that affect consciousness and behavior. Ammonia interferes with brain function at many sites. Ammonia crosses the blood-brain barrier and directly depresses the central nervous system.
Avatar f tn I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I work in a paint department. I mix colors and clean up paint pretty much. Since I've worked there we have always used glass cleaner to clean the paint off the desk and our hands. I didnt know this until today but the cleaner we use has ammonia in it. I've been using it every day for a few months to get the paint off of my hands. Could it have hurt my baby?
Avatar n tn We discovered that my husband had an episode of Encephalopathy, which is high ammonia in the blood. But by the time we had his blood checked his levels were right smack in the middle of the range. Doctor said he was fine. So my question is can this ammonia gone untreated continue to rise and lower on its own. Because he has days that he seems fine and then days when he is not with me completely. He does not eat much as his taste buds are totally out of wack. Most foods taste very salty.
Avatar f tn I recently found out I had high ammonia, it was 66, I am taking lactalose and it is is now normal. All my blood work is within normal ranges on my liver function test and I also had a sonogram, have a mild fatty liver. Was wondering what could have caused this. I do drink a few beers a night.
Avatar f tn Please get a complete hormone panel ESH, LH, estrogen, progesterone and see if there is an imbalance. Hormone replacement therapy will help. With metal toxicity, certain chelating agents are given which bind with the metal and remove them from the body. Normal detox diet will not take care of that. It basically increases the antioxidants in the body. Hope this helps. Take care!
Avatar m tn Acquired nystagmus (repetitive, involuntary, to and fro oscillation of the eyes) is most commonly caused by vestibular disorders, stroke, multiple sclerosis, trauma and drug toxicity.
Avatar f tn My sister recently had a left sided stroke at the age of 24 a few days before Christmas 2015. She has cirrhosis of the liver and her ammonia levels are very high.she has jaundice and is very confused. She has a birth control implant in her arm. Should the implant be removed? Could it be harming her liver even more? Could the implant be the cause of her stroke?
Avatar n tn Patients with liver disease are unable to process or detoxify ammonia so that ammonia levels can reach dangerously high levels. This is coupled by increased ammonia production of colonic bacteria, especially if one is constipated or has an irregular bowel movement. High protein intake can also lead to an incresed ammonia production. I suggest you talk about these possibilities with your doctors.
Avatar n tn The medication is very beneficial, but I am worried about long term damage and was wondering if adderall causes or can cause glutamate toxicity within the motor cells. I know muscle twitching is usually benign, but I am concerned about the effects adderall has on motor neuron activity possible MND. I know this is kind of an off the wall question, but I would really appreciate any input you or your colleagues have on this issue and if I should continue taking adderall?
