I cant be sure where the smell is coming from - it's quite obvious if I breath in really deep through my nose a few times.

I am also wondering in advanced cirrohsis will the lactolose eventually be uneffective in bringing down the ammonia levels? My final question is what kind of life expectancy is there when the cirrohsis reaches the level that she is at?

It would be a good idea for you to drive him as he is a hazard to other people not only himself, I dont know about smelling ammonia but I wondered if he eats before he goes out as it could be low blood suger or even diabetes he should have a sugar test done, does he take any meds as sometimes there are side effects, any anti histimines that are not non-drowsy? If he passes out he definatly should go back to the Doctor and tell him and DO NOT let him drive ...

2 weeks later, he is acting like a zombie, he was admitted for high level of ammonia in his blood. He was released Sunday and 3 days later he is acting like a zombie again. He is going to the restroom somewhat normal. And drinking and eatting when forced. He is stuggling to take his meds., sometimes taking 45 min just to take the liquid meds. I am 13 hours away from my dad. Why is this happening?

I thought I was the only one who experienced that! In my case, it turned out to be sinus issues. I never put it together because I didn't have sinus headaches or drainage until days or weeks after noticing the ammonia-like odors in places they shouldn't be present. It was actually my allergy doc who figured it out. As long as I keep the allergies under control with claritin or zyrtec, so they don't develop into a sinus infection, I don't smell odd things any longer.
