Suppose the ammonia levels WERE high, will the damage in liver not manifest in some other parameter as well? (maybe urea, BUN, creatine, etc.?) Is it possible that simply the ammonia levels are high and all other parameters are normal? Some literature on web calls the Liver Function Tests as "Dead Liver Tests", the reason being, they say, is the LFT will continue to be normal unless serious, irreversible damage is already happened in the liver.

Old urine for me means ammonia, an ammonia smell which the body can release for several reasons. Maybe see a GP first and have some blood test done? And if you’re taking any fancy supplements try not to for a bit?

After being told that there was nothing wrong with me for three years a geneticist discovered that my ammonia levels (reference range is 12-47 umol/L) were double and triple what they should have been after eating. I should also note that during that time I was having Ensure meal replacements as I thought this was a healthier option. After cutting down on protein, taking lactulose (30ml/3x/day) and starting Rifaximin (600mg/2x/day for the encephalopathy) my symptoms quickly started to improve.

Yup either plant based dyes (my dr recommended) or since a lot of salons (atleast by me) don't carry it they will usually have an oil based dye thats ammonia free :) I'm having my cousin dye mine at her salon in 2 weeks she said that is a good alternative to plant based dyes :)

Wondering if anyone has had to travel overseas, whilst taking their thyroid medication. I know the rule is to keep them refrigerated. How did you go about it? Do airlines have a policy on people with medication needing to be kept cold? I haven't been able to find anything on it online. Our major airline QANTAS said when I called them, "oh just let the flight attendants know when you get there" I am not happy with that answer!

I am so sorry to hear of your troubles, from what I know, and it isn't much, it takes time for the tx for high ammonia to start working.

Lactulose and rifaximin are the standard treatment meds now. They both work differently and the combination works to prevent future occurrences of hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Hepatic encephalopathy is reversible with treatment. This relies on suppressing the production of the toxic substances in the intestine and is most commonly done with the laxative lactulose or with non-absorbable antibiotics such as rifaximin.

I had one about 10 years ago, and the thing I remember the most about it was that it had a strong smell (probably like amonnia). Does the bull's eye rash have any smell?
