Avatar m tn Rintarou, did you put it in this sensitive area in an attempt to treat genital warts? It's not supposed to be used for that purpose. That said, here's from one of the articles about the use of silver nitrate: "Repeated applications of silver nitrate may cause a gray or blue-black discoloration of treated skin. This is caused by the silver component of this medicine and is generally not harmful. However, silver nitrate can cause skin burns.
Avatar n tn Prinzmetal represents spams of the coronary vessel and the angina is unpredictable but dosing daily with a nitrate is not the solution. I occasionally take a sub nitrate when there is unexpected exertion happens. You should see your doctor for medfication adjustment or change because not controlling angina is depriving your heart cells of blood/oxygen and that can lead to heart failure or heart attack.
Avatar f tn Aspirin helps reduce some types of pain, but the appropriate medication (if angina caused by a heart condition) would by a nitrate. A nitrate would dilate heart vessels enabling the heart to receive moe oxygenated blood. Angina (chest pain) is often due to a deficit of blood to the heart tissues.
Avatar m tn You can be treated for pectoris angina with a nitrate. This medication dilates corornary vessels and relieves any pain due to vessel stenosis. There is a fast acting nitrate that relieves angina quickly (nitro) and a slower nitrate that is effective for a longer period of time.
Avatar n tn I take a nitrate medication prior to going to workout 3 times a week and that prevents any angina from the circumflex. The nitrate dilates the coronary vessels and the improved blood flow prevents any angina pectoris. There is a period of time for restnosis of an implant up to about a year with drug eluded stents. To help prevent restenosis from a blood clot, plavix medication is recommended for up to a year or more due to the vulnerabiility.
Avatar f tn Hello: Occassionally when having a bowel movement, I notice a very strong odor of ammonia. It reminds me of the odor at the camp outhouses. I haven't been able to figure any similarities between instances (recent eating habits, activities, etc.). We eat a round diet of meat, veggies and fruits. My bowel movements for the most part are good in regularity and consistency. The only medical condition I've had lately was with high blood pressure.
Avatar m tn Nitrate Medications for heart disease - The combination of vitamin C with nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, or isosorbide mononitrate reduces the occurrence of nitrate tolerance. Nitrate tolerance is when the body builds up a tolerance to the medicine so that it no longer has its desired effect. People taking nitrate-containing medications generally follow a 12 hours on, 12 hours off schedule to avoid this tolerance.
Avatar n tn The guidelines are not to treat any lesion less than 70% (exception would be if there are symptoms such as chest pain), if there is treatment for symptoms, then medication. If medication does not effectively treat the lesion, then a stent implant. Sometimes stents are not a solution because the lesion is too long, difficult to assess, etc. then a bypass. COURAGE study has concluded there is no difference for longivity with any of the 3 therapies (google for more information if interested).
Avatar f tn Renexa is a nitrate and should relieve your chest pain and that would indicate the chest pain is due to a heart condition. However, a heart issue could be concomitant with another condition that causes chest pains, and you should contact your doctor for the chest pain and feeling of weakness. I take a nitrate (isosorbide) for chest pain (angina) and that controls any angina I would have without the medication. Hope this helps, and thanks for the question.
Avatar n tn Normav, I'd encourage you to ask your father's doctors these questions. I know it's often difficult to get them to spend 5 minutes with you answering questions in language that you understand, but insist on it. An ammonia level of 400 is extremely high. If your father has been in the hospital for 3 weeks with liver failure and his ammonia is still this high, it sounds pretty grim to me.
Avatar n tn You can develop a tolerance for nitrate medication! Talk to your doctor or nurse to establish effective control for your angina with the medication if possible. Your condition does not give you any indication when angina will orccur as the angina is a result of spasms so something has to be worked out in regard to effective treatment. I take isosorbide for the past 5 years, 10 mg, before going to the gym 3 times a week for a workout as I know there could be an episode.
Avatar m tn My understanding of nitrate medication one can develop a tolerance with continued useage without an interuption. I only take a nitrate 3 times a week without any problems so I can't verify by personal experience. If and when the recommended dose for a nitrate is no longer effective, then intervention would be the only option.
Avatar m tn If the chest pain is related to ischemia, a nitrate would relieve chest pain, and if the pain is angina pectoris (deficit of blood to heart cells). Intervention with stents or bypass and/or medication should provide relief from chest pain. Is your friend taking any medication for chest pain?
Avatar n tn We are accustomed to dealing with personality issues from his ammonia levels. He was recently diagnosed with moderate Alzs although we think he has been undiagnosed for years. He is currently hospitalized and physically restrained because he became combative in the nursing home. His ammonia level was elevated but has come down. However, the agitation/aggression hasn't changed. The dr started him on namenda last week. Has anyone seen this kind of aggression from namenda?? HELP!!
Avatar f tn I went to wash my boyfriends shirt today and it was drenched in what I thought was a bottle of ammonia. I later realized it was him sweating an ungodly amount again and it smelled like ammonia. He had pancreatic a few years ago and is diabetic now. He also does not take his diabetes medication and He still drinks beer almost everyday. I worried this could be liver or kidney disease. Anyone help would be great!
Avatar f tn Imdur is a nitrate that targets coronary vessels. It relaxes and dilates the coronary arteries to supply an ample amount of blood/oxygen. The cost may be a deficit in other areas when there is vigorous exertion. There is other medication to dilate system vessels such as an ACE inhibitor and a beta blocker. I have a totally blocked LAD and the RCA was stented about 4 years ago.
Avatar m tn I have an exercise routine 3 times a week and I take the nitrate prior to going for a workout. The medication is effective for almost all day. I also have sublinqual nitro that is fast acting and useful for immediate relief if there is angina....almost never necessary. I have never tried a patch...is there a special benefit? With a nitrate (slow acting) one can build up a tolerance, so it is necessary to have intervals without.
Avatar n tn I've noticed that from time to time, but becoming more frequent, my urine has a strong ammonia smell. The color is fairly normal - clear to golden - but the smell is there! I don't have pain or burning while urinating nor do I go to the toilet more often than usual. So what can be the cause? Thanks for any ideas.
Avatar f tn Angina can be successfully treated with a nitrate medication. I have been taking a nitrate for going on 7 years and there has been no advancement of the underlying cause Hope this helps, and if you have any further questions or comments you are welcome to respond.
Avatar f tn When I do gentle exercise or its a hot day, the perspiration from my arms, neck and other body parts smells very strongly of cat wee or ammonia. So much so that people around me constantly comment 'can you smell wee?' etc. Its really getting me down. I am a 23 year old woman, vegetarian, currently taking Levothyroxine (just as background info) Please help.
Avatar m tn It is a slow acting nitrate to interupt angina (chest pain). Originally, the nitrate was a dosage twice a day for me, but now I take the med prior to my exercise routine and I am pain free. But, if you have angina, it should be treated as angina is an indication your heart is not receiving sufficient blood. This can/will damage heart cells and can lead to ischemic heart failure.
