Avatar f tn I have a question, my mother passed away a couple of days ago and all I can think of was her last days at the hospital, my question is, when a person that is awaiting a liver transplant and has many other problems that are going bad and her ammonia levels keeps rising and out of a sudden they can't respond back to any questions, can they understand what you are saying to them?
Avatar m tn I just finished treatment about a week ago and figure weight will come off. My ammonia levels are great so no increase for me on the lactulose end (pardon the pun). However, lactulose is the new fix for constipation.
Avatar n tn At the age of 36 she had to have a complete gastrectomy(entire stomach removed) due to massive polyps. One year ago she started developing high ammonia levels, range from upper 60's to 110. Massive headaches seem to accompany the elevated levels. She has had liver function tests and biopsies for years now and have determined the problem isn't her liver. They prescribed lactulose and Xifaximim(antibiotic given to liver disease patients, might have the spelling wrong).
Avatar f tn His condition has been unchanged for 3 weeks. I called and asked what his ammonia levels were last week. The nurse gave me the run around and said they were within normal limits. Without the limits in fornt of me I don't know what they are. My husband went to Utah 2 days after I called, and all of a sudden they were checking ammonia levels and trating him with Lactolose, which I know is the appropriate Tx.
Avatar m tn With cirrhosis how can I control my ammonia levels, what are my options in medications,
1008841 tn?1293598960 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels. Flowerchild: you can calculate your own MELD score if you have a copy of your lab reports from bloodwork by using this site: http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar f tn While elevated ammonia levels are seen in cirrhotic patients there can be encephalopathy with normal ammonia levels and there can also be no mental impairment in some patients with elevated ammonia levels. Basically, ammonia levels are of limited use for diagnosing cirrhosis or hepatic impairment. I would also think some other results of your blood work would have been out of range if you are cirrhotic or are suffering significant liver impairment.
1654058 tn?1407159066 Digested blood represents a large protein load in the gut which can lead to higher levels of ammonia and other toxins and, not surprisingly, hepatic encephalopathy is frequent in this setting." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No variceal bleeding or banding. Nadolol is taken a a prophylaxis.
412873 tn?1329174455 Does anyone know the name for the condition that leads to elevated ammonia levels in the blood? I think it happens when the liver is less able to remove toxins from the blood and can lead to confusion and other symptoms. Thanks for any input.
Avatar n tn Yes it does. High levels of ammonia cause hepatic encephalopathy which in turn can cause confusion, sleepiness and forgetfulness. There are medications to help lower those levels. Speak to your hep doc.

Avatar f tn My mother has cirrohsis and has ascites and is struggling with high ammonia levels. She is being treated with lactolose and for now it is bringing her levels down. She reached 102 a few days ago and the lactolose has returned her level to 54. I am trying to find out how how and ammonia level can go before it is considered toxic and will cause her to go into a coma? I am also wondering in advanced cirrohsis will the lactolose eventually be uneffective in bringing down the ammonia levels?
238010 tn?1420406272 re like some of us -- and that was my case when treating -- who have a hard time finding anything appetizing to eat (often combined with significant weight loss) then just eat whatever fat will give you the calories, energy and weight to continue on -- be it ice cream, pizza, cheese omelets of cheese cake.
Avatar m tn So, I am not a doctor, but one of the side effects I am reading about from Topamax is an increased ammonia level in the blood. Then I read that heightened ammonia in blood can lead to kidney stones, hair loss and confusion...all side effects of Topamax. So, my thinking is that adding water and maybe some milk thistle or other liver supporting supplements may help tip the balance back.
Avatar f tn My husband, who has ESLD, hasn't had his labwork done in nearly a year. He isn't taking his lactulose, but drinks alcohol daily, so I know his ammonia level must be off the charts. Our dr. has never shared w/us what the 'norm' is for ammonia levels, or count, whatever they call it. Does it depend on weight or age? My husband is 61 @ about 250 lbs.
Avatar n tn He also has hemochromatosis but has not done a phlebotomy in over a year. His ammonia levels are twice as high as the norm. He has had a recent weight loss and is not able to or does not want to stop drinking alcohol. Once a person has advanced cirrhosis and does not stop drinking how long might they live? I am very concerned.
Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.
Avatar m tn My elevated ammonia levels usually responded well to Lactulose which helps reduce ammonia levels in two ways- it is a laxative so animal proteins that lead to ammonia formation spend less time in the digestive tract and it also changes the flora of the gut to decrease serum levels of ammonia.
Avatar m tn The problem is that they need to go by symptoms more than level of ammonia as people with high levels can have no symptoms (rares I know) and people with low levels can have bad symptoms. There is also an antibiotic that can be taken but it is very very expensive. First thing I would do is go see the doctor to see if he thinks it could be causing her balanace problem. Second thing is that I would monitor anything she eats, drinks puts on her skin or in her eyes.
Avatar n tn Patients with liver disease are unable to process or detoxify ammonia so that ammonia levels can reach dangerously high levels. This is coupled by increased ammonia production of colonic bacteria, especially if one is constipated or has an irregular bowel movement. High protein intake can also lead to an incresed ammonia production. I suggest you talk about these possibilities with your doctors.
Avatar m tn After being told that there was nothing wrong with me for three years a geneticist discovered that my ammonia levels (reference range is 12-47 umol/L) were double and triple what they should have been after eating. I should also note that during that time I was having Ensure meal replacements as I thought this was a healthier option. After cutting down on protein, taking lactulose (30ml/3x/day) and starting Rifaximin (600mg/2x/day for the encephalopathy) my symptoms quickly started to improve.
Avatar n tn Post your FT3 and FT4 levels. If you can't lose the weight, maybe you'd benefit from your levels in the upper 1/3 of the range, not just 'in range' as so many clueless endos are apt to leave you. The reason many of us don't lose weight is because many endos still don't test/treat FT3 levels.
Avatar f tn In the past, it was thought that consumption of protein even at normal levels increased the risk of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. This has been shown to be incorrect. Many people with chronic liver disease are malnourished and require adequate protein to maintain a stable body weight. A diet with adequate protein and energy is therefore recommended.
190885 tn?1333025891 I am assuming you have cirrhosis? (I have a list of cirrhotics but I know it doesn't include everyone with cirrhosis here). Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and brain fog are two different conditions. "Brain fog" has nothing to do with ammonia levels. Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.
Avatar n tn Thank you, No the doctor claimed that his ammonia level was fine. It was at 15. Which according to the levels it sat right in the middle of the chart. I will definetly pick up the supplements you listed. He use to take Milk thistle lat the onset of his Hep c. But eventually stopped. Wasn'tsure if it was doing him anygood. I am not sure what Selenium is. Does it come in pill form and will I find it with all the other supplents? This Gaug Journal you ,mentioned is it on this site?
