Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia levels up

Avatar n tn Thank you, No the doctor claimed that his ammonia level was fine. It was at 15. Which according to the levels it sat right in the middle of the chart. I will definetly pick up the supplements you listed. He use to take Milk thistle lat the onset of his Hep c. But eventually stopped. Wasn'tsure if it was doing him anygood. I am not sure what Selenium is. Does it come in pill form and will I find it with all the other supplents? This Gaug Journal you ,mentioned is it on this site?
1008841 tn?1293602560 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels. Flowerchild: you can calculate your own MELD score if you have a copy of your lab reports from bloodwork by using this site: http://www.mayoclinic.
Avatar f tn I had problems with ammonia levels due to decompensated cirrhosis and landed up in the ER delirious before I was started on lactulose again. For some odd reason, my liver doc, whom I respect, doesn't check for them either.I know he told me why but honestly, I don't remember. As long as your uncle is on lactulose he should be okay but remember its a side effect of a serious problem.
Avatar m tn Has anyone been told that you have high ammonia levels from Hep-C? If so, please tell me the common side effects and if you use Lactulose for treatment. I am interested in hearing about headaches that you may have from the disease or treatment.
Avatar f tn How to keep ammonia levels down? Or how to lower them? Anyone know? Thanks in advance.
Avatar n tn couldn't get up and was very confused. We rushed her to the ER and her blood work showed elevated calcium and ammonia levels. She hasn't spoken since..she is tied to a bed, with diapers on moaning. We know know they have found a small, very small lung cancer..and her calcium levels have returned to normal with IV medications. But her ammonia level is 104..dangerously high. She is bloated and they are biopsing her liver now. We fear liver cancer. She is almost in a coma now.
Avatar f tn I have a question, my mother passed away a couple of days ago and all I can think of was her last days at the hospital, my question is, when a person that is awaiting a liver transplant and has many other problems that are going bad and her ammonia levels keeps rising and out of a sudden they can't respond back to any questions, can they understand what you are saying to them?
Avatar m tn Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine. Ammonia levels in the blood rise when the liver is not able to convert ammonia to urea. This may be caused by cirrhosis or severe hepatitis. Since you are on this forum I assume you have hep c? Are you experiencing the effects of toxic buildup in your blood? Hepatic encephalopathy.
Avatar n tn This site has a table about 1/2 way down that indicates what normal ammonia levels are at various ages. A little bit further down the article explains that ammonia levels do not necessarily correlate with the symptoms of encepalophy. I hope this helps.
968560 tn?1307455098 Someone mentioned elevated blood ammonia levels. I'm feeling much better now. But I looked up Hyperammonemia and my symptoms were exactly like what I read. Confusion, anxiety, no appetite ect. I'm on week 45 fo tx,and like I said I'm 75% back to normal. I see Gastro on 1/04 and i'm going to discuss this with him then. I was just wondering if anyone had any experiences with this.
Avatar m tn The liver which is decompromised cannot metabolize the waste products hence there is an elevation of blood ammonia levels resulting in encephalopathy. Also, iincreased levels of ammonia may also be seen with gastrointestinal bleeding, where the blood cells are haemolysed in the intestines, releasing protein. The treatment is directed at the cause and in giving life support measures.
Avatar m tn 10 to 80 mcg/dL Your liver may not work properly if you have high levels of ammonia in your blood. Ammonia is a chemical made by bacteria in your intestines while you process protein. Your body treats ammonia as a waste product. It turns it into glutamine and urea. Then the urea travels to the kidneys and is eliminated in your urine. Ammonia will build up if the liver is too damaged to get rid of urea. This can sometimes happen if you have advanced liver disease.
Avatar n tn I've had alot of problems with ammonia levels. Thats what they give me for it. My problem was my spleen would swell. But I thought I was tired and confused and forgot alot of thingswhen I was on treatment but, that does not compair to how the high ammonia level makes you feel. The comment the other member made about the protein is so very true and it's a big problem in your ammonia level getting high.
30678 tn?1217992847 Has anyone had any problems with ammonia levels being elevated. My doctor prescribed lactulose for the problem. Just curious if anyone else has had the same problem.
Avatar f tn My gastroentologist would like to start me on lactulose after recent blood test shows elevated ammonia levels. I was curious on what causes this. A previous blood test done earlier this year with my primary doctor only showed an elevated liver function which is why I visited the gastro in the first place. No word of high ammonia levels till now. The only difference is i started drinking protein shakes in the morning for breakfast. Could this have anything to do with it?
Avatar n tn My Ammonia levels are at high (61), yet after a birrage of tests and an MRI, my liver is fine, and the doctors are unsure as to what is causing the raised Blood Ammonia Levels. Question...There are some unusual circumstances in which someone can have an elevated ammonia and a normal liver. What are they?
1184842 tn?1264268787 the brain damage caused by high ammonia levels not to mention accelerated liver damage are not what you want either right? I think the better part of valor is to tolerate the taste so that you can keep your wits about you...unless dymentia, brain fog and liver failure sound good to you.
1654058 tn?1407162666 Digested blood represents a large protein load in the gut which can lead to higher levels of ammonia and other toxins and, not surprisingly, hepatic encephalopathy is frequent in this setting." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No variceal bleeding or banding. Nadolol is taken a a prophylaxis.
1481758 tn?1287642243 Sounds like something going on with your pancreas/liver. This CAN happen with high ammonia levels too. Are you a drinker? Any medical history? I would be following up with your physician or seeking emergent care AGAIN especially if you are experiencing more symptoms or not getting better.
Avatar n tn I thought she had a stroke but the doctors are saying it is because her ammonia level in her liver is 178. It comes down but goes back up and she is not getting any better. She has been seen by GI, Neroligist, Cancer doctors and noone can tell me what is happening. She has been tested for hepatis and it was negative. Can you give any advice?
Avatar f tn Does anyone here know about ammonia levels? My ex was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. He was confused and disoriented. His ammonia level was 152. After lots of the heavy-duty laxatives, he is definitely cleaned out. His ammonia level yesterday was 149. Today the doc said they are giving him maximum doses (and he is not constipated), but his level is 230 today. His body is producing ammonia faster than they can get rid of it.
Avatar m tn We are using high doses a Vitamin C to help flush the brain of the ammonia. The blood levels came back into normal range with in 36 hours but the cause is undetermined.
Avatar n tn In one week my ammonia level has gone from 68 to 93. Only numbers off on liver function on 10/29 were ALT @ 61 (5 high). ALT on 10/21 test was 53. I've read all I can find on this but nowhere have I found anything mentioning high ammonia levels and "normal" liver functions. I'm having many symptoms associated with high ammonia. Last 2 months I've had a major problem with abdomen distentia. Abdomen and pelvis CT was performed on 10/30...
Avatar n tn That should be given if you have high ammonia levels, it can help lower them. High ammonia levels can make you have trouble thinking, that too should be addressed right away. If you can't get satisfactory answers from your doctor, see someone else. I think you should go to the ER today.
Avatar m tn The neurologist found my carnitine levels are low and my ammonia is high. My great grandmother passed away from muscular dystrophy (not sure if it's important). If you are deficient in carnitine does that mean you have the metabolic muscular disease? Could the low carnitine levels explain the mild pulmonary hypertension which in turns explains the decreased diffusion capacity? Could it explain all the symptoms?
Avatar m tn Symptoms of HE are forgetfulness, confusion, inverted sleep-wake pattern (sleeping by day, being awake at night), marked irritability, tremor, difficulties with coordination and trouble writing, lethargy and eventually coma. If you can have ammonia without mental symptoms? No. Ammonia levels can be detected with a blood test so it is easy to assess. In summary: No you don't have the indications for ammonia buildup and hepatic encephalopathy (HE).
3097131 tn?1357088481 His blackout episodes has landed him in prison(I think). He gets in a rage when he has the episodes, thats when his ammonia levels are elevated. Is this normal?
