ammonia

14315163 tn?1433901017 | He's had numerous episodes of HE where he's been hospitalized with ammonia levels around 100-300, they give extra Lactulose, and within a couple days he's discharged (sometimes he just spent several hours in ER when it was around 100 or below and was then fine). Since that was all it seemed to take, I asked the doctor if he could just take the extra dose himself. He said that was fine and it was manageable... until this month.
Avatar n tn She is now capable of walking without a cane even though she is told she must use it and wants to go home. Her ammonia level is reportedly 160 (I do not know the units) . I spent an afternoon with her 2 days ago and had a chance to tour the nursing home. My mom was able to walk around with me and converse normally for 2 hours. (basic chit chat, etc) The other residents of the home are vegetative and my mom has no one to talk to.

Avatar n tn Drs say his kidneys are doing better, but they are giving him alot of fluids, bilirubin is back up...yellow eyes/skin, lot of swelling in the arms and legs, and super high ammonia levels again despite lactulose and Xifaxin. I am not sure how much time this will buy him or if he will ever be able to be normal. He has a hard time talking and gets confused easily and is still losing blood and had 2 more units this morning.
Avatar m tn He has already had a triple heart bi-pass, galbladder removed, viens that cause internal bleeding had to be surgically stopped in the Esophagus/5 units of blood given. Blood amonia levels are 3+ times over normal, blood platlette count is 40 to 50. Doctors say nothing at all, they just call me with the blood results? Can anyone advise what stages we are at here.
Avatar m tn The normal range for AST levels in the bloodstream are 5 IU/L to 43 IU/L. Like ALT levels, AST levels in people with HCV often vary over time and can't be used to forecast disease progression or specifically measure liver damage. " ----------- hope it helps.
Avatar m tn The blood is metabolized in the intestines as a very high protein source, a bi-product of this increased serum Ammonia levels..It would be the toxic ammonia levels that are responsible for the dimentia. This would possibly stop after resection (as long as thats the only cause). You're going to have to carefully weigh what you think would be his opinion were he to have a clear mind. Was there a prognosis for a resolution of his cancer?
Avatar n tn Her blood work was pretty normal except for an ammonia over 500.The 1st MRI and CT Scan both were neg for stroke, tumor, bleed-both showed severe brain swelling.2nd MRI and CT pretty normal.Chest xray,2 spinal taps, multiple bld, urine and central line cultures all negative.EEG once the 14 hour seizure stopped showed something abnormal but the neurologist said it wasn't seizure activity but unsure what it was.GYN exam unremarkable. She did develop a UTI few days after admission.
1475202 tn?1536274577 I dont mind any of the questions at all. That is my main reason for posting these results so that others might learn and have a better understanding of their own Lab Results. It is very critical to understand them. Especially if your not going to listen to your doctors advice and warnings. Low Platelets when having cirrhosis is very common. The group of veins that feed the liver are called portal veins.
Avatar n tn Find out what her bun, creatinine levels are. Find out what her acid levels are. What is her blood pressure currently? When the blood pressure drops too low the liver will stop working as it should. Did she have a stroke? What are they doing to remove the edema? Lasix? How are her intestines working and is there any rectal bleeding? Cardiogenic shock affects the organs and needs to be treated aggressively in the beginning.
1654058 tn?1407162666 When my ex-husband was hospitalized this last time when he was comatose from high ammonia levels his platelets were between 30,000-35,000. His bruising was horrendous afterwards from all the IV's and blood draws. It took a few weeks for them to clear-up." "I can only relate my experience and other's close to me. The answer is a clear and definitive, it depends. ;-) Bruises caused by contact ( the type we think as a "normal" bruise) can take several days to weeks.
233616 tn?1312790796 Have you checked in to Lactoferrin. It works against the hep c virus plus helps reduce iron levels. You can read about it at the Alchemist Lab website. They have several good articles about it showing some research that has been done. I think one of their newsletters was where I read that they were having good results with iron reduction. I have read quite a bit about it in the past and HR has talked about it also. I think he was discussing it with Gauf or St. George-maybe both.
144210 tn?1273092382 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From The Life Extension website (courtesy of Evangelin) Reducing Iron Stores Elevated serum iron levels are often found in people with hepatitis C and cause further oxidative damage to the liver. Certain nutritional supplements have shown evidence of reducing serum iron levels.
Avatar n tn Went to the Internist, and was ordered a LFT which gave a FLASHING RED light with moderately elevated enzyme levels and a positive Antibody test for HCV. I am a vegetarian, no alcohol and drugs ever in life. But where I live, the practices in the hospitals are not safe. Disposable needles came in only 5 years ago, and even those are not handled properly. In the past 25 years with pain medication and blood tests every so often- never knew where exactly I got the wrong *****!
1691407 tn?1332716147 His new liver is stage 3 fibrosis. As far as I know, his ammonia levels are not elevated. I did have them checked in December. There was a small 1.3 cm carcinoma on his original liver, but as far as we know, he does not have cancer anywhere now. I suppose that could be a possibility . . ." * I guess you are very aware that your husband's donor liver is now being damaged very quickly by an aggressive form of hepatitis C?
4877493 tn?1391634776 You should follow the usual rules for living healthy - regular exercise, eating lots if fresh fruits and vegetables, keeping your weight at normal or slightly lower levels. You should check with your doctor and/or online resources first before taking any kind of medicine or nutritional supplement. Good luck!
173975 tn?1216261375 Kalio 1 knows some good supplements for helping you with your nutrition if you can't keep your food down. For your brain, what is your ammonia like? If the levels are high you can take lactulose. It cleared a lot of my brain fog. I've had trouble with labcorp also (and quest). If it says that you are to get a copy on your order, call them and make a fuss. I've found the labs are better at faxing. If you don't have a fax # you can use, try www.efax.
Avatar m tn this was taken from medicine net. Nicotinic acid (Niacin) Niacin, like the stains, has been used to treat elevated blood cholesterol levels as well as elevated triglyceride levels. Also like the statins, niacin can damage the liver. It can cause mild transient elevations in blood levels of AST and ALT, jaundice, and, in rare instances, liver failure. Liver toxicity with niacin is dose-dependent; toxic doses usually exceed 2 grams per day.
Avatar n tn Epoetin (Procrit) is the best help, but only somewhat in my experience. I am on 60,000 units a week and my Hg is at 9.8. Modafinil another drug that is sometimes used to combat fatigue in people undergoing hcv treatment. I have been offered it, but have decided to just minimize adjunct drugs and suffer through the treatment.
Avatar m tn [1-6] A recent trial of rifaximin conducted in the United States evaluated its use during acute exacerbation of HE to determine whether the agent could effectively lower ammonia levels and other known correlates of HE (Capsule Summary).
Avatar f tn This can cause an increase in the ammonia levels which as you know will also precipitate an episode of HE. The worse the episode of HE the more debilitating it has been for him and finally after 5 weeks of it, his body just gave out two weeks ago. He ended up in the hospital for a week with IV fluids and IV antibiotics. When he was discharged, he was great. The best he had been in a long while.
488823 tn?1218374167 It sounds like you are having some symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy if you are on medication for ammonia. Hopefully your doctor is a liver specialist (hepatologist), and hopefully he is monitoring you carefully. Some of the side effects of triple therapy with Incivek include fatigue, flu like symptoms, nausea, rash, anal/rectal discomfort, and anemia. Do you have a friend or a family member who can help you out for the first 12 weeks?
1077911 tn?1392777399 I am trying to become an expert on this. I am depressed more now than when this started. My ammonia levels seem to stay elevated which may be causing the depression. I'm sure it's not helping. Hopefully when I get all the reports on these last test, I will have some answers and a treatment plan can begin. Glad I found this site. There is definitely a lot of information here.
Avatar m tn We haven't done one of these for awhile. So what are your stats? Both Hep C related and anything else you want to share. If you're on treatment, what week and how are you doing? If you haven't treated yet, do you plan on treating soon or going to wait? If you've finished treating, how did it all go? Etc, Etc...
Avatar n tn Nearly all cardiologists quiver in their boots when it comes to stenting high levels of disease. It took me 2 years to find someone to re-open my LAD and it took 5 long stents. I found the best solution was to approach a training/research hospital because this is where all the experts and best equipment are. The man who did my LAD was the person who installed the very first stent in the UK and was the first to use a balloon here.

Avatar m tn Cirrhosis can also cause hepatic encephalopathy as the damaged liver cannot process waste in the blood resulting in high blood ammonia levels which results in symptoms of disorientation, memory loss, confusion, coma and death. Again HE is a medical emergency. If you notice none of the symptoms you list that you say make you think you have cirrhosis are not on this list.
Avatar n tn All those memory and concentration problems sound like classic 'hepatic encephalopathy' and is really quite common since its just a chemical thing--too much ammonia caused 'fuzzy thinking.' Dairy converts to ammonia in the small intestines immediately!
