A little bit further down the article explains that ammonia levels do not necessarily correlate with the symptoms of encepalophy. I hope this helps.
Avatar m tn my mother was very lethargic and we took her to ER. She had an ammonia levels of 169. would this be the reason and is this related to the liver?
Avatar f tn Our dr. has never shared w/us what the 'norm' is for ammonia levels, or count, whatever they call it. Does it depend on weight or age? My husband is 61 @ about 250 lbs.
Avatar f tn My ammonia levels were off the chart, but no coma. In my experience the treating of the ammonia level (Xifaxin and Lactulose) took me 4 -5 days to completely that alternate universe. Today, I regularly sleep 12 to 18 hours; and with night time insomnia. If I start feeling "funky" in my thoughts, I rest or sleep. But like Hector suggested, try the cirrhosis community. I think it's great to be concerned with your ex-husband's health. At one time he was your key to everything.
Avatar n tn I do not know if high ammonia levels are harmful to a fetus because few women who have high ammonia levels due to advanced liver disease have children. In those that do, the advanced liver disease in itself poses a risk to both mother and child. It is unlikely that gallstones would contribute to the high ammonia levels. Finally, it is possible to have cirrhosis with a normal ultrasound. The ultrasound is not a sensitive test for early to moderate cirrhosis, in particular.
Avatar n tn Most of the ensuing issues cleared up after 2 weeks however his direct bilirubin levels remained high. His ast count reached 299 and is presently dropping. His ggt and ammonia levels were also elevated. An ultrasound was perforemd on the liver and a small stone, 5mm by 7mm was found. A high resolution dye scan was performed which showed the liver functions as normal. We are waiting the results of a liver biopsy. He also has a bladder infection which is being treated with antibiotics.

Avatar f tn Agree with bug - get his ammonia levels checked. Go to the ER if that's the only way you can get help. Ask the doctor on duty about Lactulose. Ask the doctor about how he can get his MELD score in case he needs to be listed for transplant. Have him get an account here so that he can start dealing with his own stuff and you can concentrate on your treatment.
29837 tn?1414538248 Increased ammonia levels are related to liver damage not the treatment drugs. Did your doctor say what the levels were? Did he put you on meds for it? Are you seeing a Heptologist?
Avatar n tn try to do all medical tests required like MRI, muscle scanning, nerve scanning, amino acid, organic acids, ammonia, lactate, repeat the CPK test since it may get better with time, blood gases, hormones, immunology system test (blood viruses), don't forget to examine her vision it might be weak since most children with hypotonia have weak vision.
Avatar n tn Low MBL levels are generally attributed to genetics. Bronchiolitis is caused by several different viruses. The most common of these is respiratory syncytial virus (RVS), which is responsible for about 100,000 hospitalizations of children under age four each year. Two subtypes of RSV have been identified, one of which causes most of the severe bronchiolitis infections.
Avatar f tn In and out of the hospital these past weeks with very high ammonia levels, severe HE, severe ascites... you name it. He had spells of feeling pretty good, that would give us hope, but end up in the ER with terrible HE. He was a wonderful father, husband and grandfather. Yes he was an alcoholic, but there is a lot of history of alcoholism in our family. The Hepatologist treating him was condescending and very rude to his family.
Avatar f tn Found his Ammonia levels to be 71 when 33 is normal. this causes poor cognitive, concentration and many other things. We did Cushings and was normal. This may not help you but It might be something that clicks for you. Also I would like to know what is MG? They still cannot find the underlying diagnosis on my son but the Psudoe Tumor was the swelling, stretch marks. I am not a Dr. and my story may not help but it is a work up to look into.
Avatar f tn The person may also have Hepatic Encephalopathy due to high ammonia levels (mental confusion, forgetfulness, changes in moods, disorientation). These are some of the physical signs of decompensation. Decompensation is also reflected in the person's labwork. It is likely that the doctor may have said your sister is not a transplant candidate because of her drinking. If your sister's ammonia levels are high, her liver is decompensated.
130737 tn?1214865065 My husband thought I had had a stroke. I saw all kinds of Dr.,s and all they could find was high ammonia levels . Since that is associated with liver, after monitoring me for 6 months.Like you I had a biopsy. and found basically the same things you mentioned. With one exception cirrhosis can not be helped with meds. Therefore I was sent for pre liver transplant eveluation. So make sure (maybe even get a second opinion ). Once they mention 4 thats not good news it's end stage.
Avatar f tn He is at the level of a 5 month old, and severely malnourished at 12 pounds 2 oz. Early testing showed excess levels of glycine (not extremely high at 300, with the normal being up to 247), ammonia and lactate. Because of the high glycine he was diagnosed with the very rare condition of NKH - Nonketotic hyperglycinemia. The glycine level has since then dropped to normal levels.
Avatar n tn Her blood work was pretty normal except for an ammonia over 500.The 1st MRI and CT Scan both were neg for stroke, tumor, bleed-both showed severe brain swelling.2nd MRI and CT pretty normal.Chest xray,2 spinal taps, multiple bld, urine and central line cultures all negative.EEG once the 14 hour seizure stopped showed something abnormal but the neurologist said it wasn't seizure activity but unsure what it was.GYN exam unremarkable. She did develop a UTI few days after admission.
Avatar n tn We even make jokes about it. I'll warn my family not to make me eat meat,b/c the ammonia levels will rise and I'll go crazy on them and it won't be my fault.
1396982 tn?1285326833 ). I dyed my hair when I was 15wks pregnant with my son because I needed a change ...I was feeling depressed....you can dye your hair safely after the first trimester but it really is best to wait just because the chemicals are so harsh, even for the ones that are supposed to be gentle. However, after 13wks pretty much any dye that isn't a high concentration of ammonia is considered safe.
190885 tn?1333029491 I'v been tested for everything every month since December and they can't figure out why my ammonia levels are so high and my liver counts are so low. I'v been to a RA a GASTRO my GP and a NURO. For joint pain which I know is arthritis but RA said no. Now I need more bloodwork for hep c and b. I did have hepatitis as a child about 40 years ago but who know which one. My mother told me I had gotten it form the neighbors children. I was very ill but no one in my family got it. Now the Dr.
12849 tn?1189759425 Or ask why am I getting this done if my liver counts are low well I suppose it's my ammonia levels. But I don't understand why I was tested for hep C and B I did have a virus as a child but there were no test for hepatitis then. Avatar m tn Like clockwork he arose from sleeping about every 10 minutes would stand up and wonder until i took him back to bed, at one point he very labored said he couldn't breath so we called 911, he was admitted to the hospital and found his ammonia levels to be 79, during his time in the ER he increasingly became more confused, agitated and disoriented.

What a great ex wife you are!! Your very strong to help out. Will keep you and the kids in my prayers!!
1028452 tn?1537452084 ' Choleretics typically lower cholesterol levels because they increase the excretion of cholesterol and decrease the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. Cynara extract from artichoke leaf has been shown to lower blood cholesterol (13%) and triglyceride levels (5%) in both human and animal studies. Consistent with its choleretic effect, Artichokes also possess some diuretic activity, helping with kidney disease and protein in the urine.
1116669 tn?1269146866 You do not have high ammonia levels unless your lab is vastly different. Elevated blood ammonia levels are common in people with hepatic encephalopathy, but the level of ammonia doesn't correlated with how server HE is. You say you suffer from "labile" depression? There are 9 types of depressions list in the DSM-IV, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. What is "labile" depression?
