Ammonia levels are correlated with a person's liver status, and bacterial load of the colon and bowels. Patients with liver disease are unable to process or detoxify ammonia so that ammonia levels can reach dangerously high levels. This is coupled by increased ammonia production of colonic bacteria, especially if one is constipated or has an irregular bowel movement. High protein intake can also lead to an incresed ammonia production.
Urine is high in nitrates, compounds high in nitrogen and oxygen. Ammonia is made up of nitrogen and hydrogen. (NH3) What you are smelling is the high concentration of bonded nitrogen.
Normally, diluted urine doesn't have much odor. If you're dehydrated and your urine becomes highly concentrated, it can have a strong ammonia smell.
If the liver is decompromised it cannot metabolize the waste products hence there is an elevation of blood ammonia levels resulting in increased excretion in the urine. Also, increased levels of ammonia may also be seen with gastrointestinal bleeding, where the blood cells are haemolysed in the intestines, releasing protein. I was diagnosed about 15 yrs ago with AIH by a biopsy and bloodworks. My understanding of the disease is that our Immune system is so strong it attacks itself, in this case thinking the Liver is a foriegn body. I am on Prednisone (20mg due to a relapse) usually 5 mg daily. Once your body adjusts to the the drug it makes a difference. The important thing I know from experience is that you have to make sure to suppliment.

I am taking Kristalose to relieve the build-up of ammonia in my blood due to hep-c. My doctor wants to see 4-5 bowel movements a day. He prescribed 2 - 20mg packs at breakfast, 2 at lunch and 1 at dinner. Some days I have 6-8 before dinner and since he does not want me to have more than that I will skip the dinner dose. My question is - If I have a movement the first thing the following morning - prior to taking anything - is that movement still removing ammonia 12-14 after the prior dose?
