ammonia

82818 tn?1206993414 the Dr ran an ammonia test and it came back as 106. I later found out you really are not to have any in your system. If so between 11 and 30. you can even go into a coma and then die. So if you feel you fit in that profile all it takes is a blood test please take. they are treating me with Enulose (Lactulose solution.) My liver was not getting filtering it so the next thing would be your kidneys so I guess my was not working. If any one else has had this problem please let me know GOD BLESS.
Avatar n tn When ammonia levels go too high in liver patients, they are given "Lactulose" (also called "Enulose"). Lactulose is a liquid laxative that binds with Ammonia to remove it from a person's system. High ammonia levels can cause everything from dementia, drunkenness, slurred speech.....to coma, and even death. Ask your doctor about LACTULOSE or ENULOSE for your mother!
Avatar m tn I have 57 ammonia level in July and in August 97 ammonia level. Took Lactulose and two weeks later had 101 and added the antibiotic effixir (sp) just last week. Will this be chronis? Is there hope to get it down and keep it down? The test showed a slightly enlarged liver. Could this be caused from spreading fertilizer, coloring my hair and spraying poision? I cut out the protein except for fish, eggs and a few other things. Driking lots more water to flush my system. Any other suggestions.

A little bit further down the article explains that ammonia levels do not necessarily correlate with the symptoms of encepalophy. I hope this helps.
Avatar f tn what are the treatments for getting ammonia out of the system and what are the symptoms
Avatar n tn So any problems in this part of the digestive system can result in higher than normal ammonia level. For example; In patients with advanced cirrhosis, the liver is no longer able to metabolize the ammonia and convert it to urea so the ammonia builds up the in body producing and travels to the person's brain with psychological and other effects. If you have advanced liver disease you blood levels for bilirubin, creatinine, and INR should be abnormal.
Avatar f tn A previous blood test done earlier this year with my primary doctor only showed an elevated liver function which is why I visited the gastro in the first place. No word of high ammonia levels till now. The only difference is i started drinking protein shakes in the morning for breakfast. Could this have anything to do with it? what other causes could their be?
Avatar f tn For the last year and a half I have been experiencing a strong ammonia body odor to a weird meat odor. I am a 31 year old male that works out 4x per week. I've read post where some ppl experience this same issue when they are working out, however this issue is constantly surrounding me. I eat a well balanced diet with a lot of vegetables, carbs, and lean meat. I've been to several doctors and had numerous of test completed in the last year and a half and they all seem to have no answers.
Avatar n tn The comment the other member made about the protein is so very true and it's a big problem in your ammonia level getting high.I'm sure you know this but keep a close eye on it my doctors in Tulane told me people can go into a coma.So from now on when all I want to do is sleep I have my lab work done. All of this is so hard because all of the things that can go wrong seem to have the same symtoms.
Avatar n tn My Mother was diagnosed with evulated ammonia. She was in the hospital for 3 days when her mental status changed to the better. The Er and Family Doctors do not know much about this. Family doctor sent her home and told us to give her lactulose and for her to have 3 BM's a day to maintain clear thinking and being able to walk. 4 days later we are back to not being able to walk or think. We don't know who to take her to or what should be done. Once her levels go down then what?
Avatar f tn # Tourniquet use - ammonia levels can be increased in the blood sample collected. # Drugs that can increase ammonia include: alcohol, barbiturates, diuretics, valproic acid, and narcotics. # Smoking" See: http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/ammonia/test.html What Affects the Test "Reasons you may not be able to have the test or why the results may not be helpful include: * Smoking. * Severe constipation. * Eating a high-protein or a low-protein diet.
Avatar m tn It is then process by the liver and eliminated through the kidneys in your urine. So any problems in this part of the digestive system can result in higher than normal ammonia level. 5611452 tn?1370974704 Sometimes the doctor will take in to account how you are feeling/acting then add in the ammonia number. I have also read that there are times when a person is having no trouble at all but then they are told that there ammonia level is high I was told that the lactulose would not bother my sugar...
Avatar n tn Ammonia levels Forum: The Hepatitis Forum I am wondering if ammonia levels are always associated with liver function. I am probably somewhat in denial here because I have a husband that is end stage and I am sure that I know what ammonia levels indicate in someone with cirrhosis. Maybe if you can just say the words to me it will help. I had ammonia levels of 50 the first time I was checked. I was experiencing problems with getting lost when I was driving and confused other times.
1654058 tn?1407162666 For example, a person with severe cirrhosis may have only slightly elevated blood ammonia levels and yet may not be thinking clearly or may be sleepy or in a coma. Other people with very high ammonia levels may think and act normally.
Avatar m tn I felt a strange burning in the back of my head and almost gagged from the ammonia smell in my sinus'. It is starting to fade now, but I must admit it scared me. Anyone have any clues?
1481758 tn?1287642243 My question is, is it common for meds that can dehydrate you (e.g diuretics, antihistamines etc in combo) to contribute to elevated ammonia levels? Esp if not historically drinking enough H20 and too much diet coke? Also take 20mg zolpidem and 1mg clonazepam ea nite and zyrtech 10mg every night and sometimes supplement w/benedryl 50mg if allergies and/sleep issues.
Avatar f tn episode and was ammitted to the hospital for four days doing tests, some of these tests said he has extremely high ammonia in his blood. This week we will hear the rest of the test results, Im very concerned what this all really means, Does this mean he is at the "last stages" and how long without seriously (because I know he will not follow thru 100%) doing treatment will he live.
Avatar m tn My doctor thinks I'm crazy... Says if I had enough ammonia in my blood to smell it in my nose, I'd have serious mental issues. I always thought ammonia was a later stage cirrhosis issue and not an early warning. I didn't have this problem when I was drinking more. It has only developed during (slow) withdrawal. I know lots of fats come out of your liver during alcohol detox and I'm hoping this is just a artifact.
1391695 tn?1298143389 It would appear your liver can convert the small small small amount that might be able to get into your eyes easily enough. Ammonia also plays a role in both normal and abnormal animal physiology. Ammonia is biosynthesised through normal amino acid metabolism and is toxic in high concentrations.[51] The liver converts ammonia to urea through a series of reactions known as the urea cycle.
Avatar f tn When I was in the hospital, my ammonia levels in my blood were high. I was given certain medications to take, and had a special diet. After I left the hospital I take certain medications, and have a diet low in sodium, and try to watch my fluid intake. I was tested back in January, and the ammonia levels in my blood were low. By the way I have Hep C, and I need a liver transplant, but I have been out of the hospital for about 2 and one half years.
Avatar f tn The ammonia levels are usually partially controlled with lactulose which is a liquid laxative that helps to asorbs ammonia in the GI system and aids with keeping the bowel cleaned out. It is generally given three times per day and dose is adjusted according to individual response. The lack of energy and decreased awake times can be attributed to several factors. One hemoglobin is very low this carries oxygen to all the organs.
Avatar n tn It sure is frustrating yah know? I mean I never know when her ammonia levels will get so high that shes back in the I.C.U. All I do is pray every night that she will be okay the next day. Well, I have a question um,how hard do u think it would be to have the docs take some of my liver out to give it to her? She's got hep c pretty bad. It's at a level 4.I figure since I'm 22,I young enough to bounce back from it. I would sure like to get ur input on that. I hope to hear from u soon!
Avatar n tn I am not aware of disease that can cause an ammonia odor in the stool. The most common ammonia-related disease is with chronic kidney disease leading it an ammonia-like breath smell. Sometimes urine that sits for awhile can smell like ammonia - thus any possible fistula (i.e. abnormal connection) between the bowels and urinary system can possibly lead to stools smelling like ammonia.

Avatar m tn How about an ammonia solution. This mixed with water in your system (lungs) can cause serious problems. I had COPD so I am affected more than some. Of course this is just a quess, however, it beats anything the doctors could explain to me. My solution works for me! No lettuce. When I eat my own vegetables I am just fine. Sometimes the answer is too simple.
