Avatar m tn The smell of urine in the toilet is the smell of ammonia. Therefore, the urine odor of PATM patients is produced by Proteus. In addition, proteus produces indole and hydrogen sulfide in our intestines. Indole is another name for faecal odor. The reason why feces stink is because of the high concentration of indole in feces. The fecal odor of PATM patients is produced by Proteus. What’s more, proteus can also produce hydrogen sulfide.
Avatar f tn There are some bacteria in the gut that produce hydrogen sulfide gas. Sometimes this gas is produced in such huge quantities that the sulfide oxidase enzyme in the wall of the gut is not able to oxidize all of it and convert it to thiosulfate. Hence the gas enters the blood stream and gets filtered by kidney into the urine. This gas has a smell of rotten eggs. You can test its presence by test strips available OTC.
Avatar f tn If you get a whiff of something particularly pungent, you could have an infection or urinary stones, which can create an ammonia-like odor. Diabetics might notice that their urine smells sweet, because of excess sugar. In the past, doctors would actually taste urine for this sweetness to diagnose diabetes. Some foods can also change urine odor. Asparagus is among the most notorious.
Avatar m tn I disagree, a common cause amonia body odor is a skin infection. An ammonia odor is often caused by infection with Helicobacter, this bacteria causes stomach ulcers, or it can be caused by eating too much protein. Ask your doctor to draw a blood test for helicobacter. Ifthe results are positive, then it can be cured with antibiotics. If it is negative, you will need to eat less fish, meat, chicken and dairy products.

Avatar m tn So I believe I contracted HIV a couple months ago. My sexual encounter was one of lower risk.. I did use a condom for intercourse, but not during foreplay or oral sex. I posted some previous info on my situation and people seemed to think I was over reacting because of this, but I've had nothing but symptoms ever since. A lot of my symptoms seemed to have been occurring sequentially.. one after the other. A couple overlap briefly but I'll give a short list.
Avatar m tn t know what to make of it. I thought because ammonia has such a low odor threshold, perhaps one would be able to smell it even before it rose to levels high enough to produce HE. I'm doing very well with the detox... Down to two light beers a night. No cravings or doubts about going back to where I used to be now, and less than a month to go. When I tried to go too fast, I got a nasty post acute syndrome and decided to do a slower taper.
Avatar n tn 45, deviations outside this range affects normal functioning cells and body systems. With a strong ammonia odor, this could be corrected by eating more red meats, foods high in protein. You may not be drinking enough water. Then again, it could be the onsight of a urinary, bladder, or kidney infection. Consult your physician on your individual case.
Avatar m tn Before my healing journey I had a very strong odor of ammonia (cat pee) in underarms and BO. Constant sweating also. After about 3 years of working on diet exercise and stress my baseline is a musty sour smell occasional BO depending on what I eat.
Avatar m tn Ammonia odor can be associated with H. pylori. Ammonia can also be associated with urine and fecal material and not due to H. pylori.
Avatar f tn Hello: Occassionally when having a bowel movement, I notice a very strong odor of ammonia. It reminds me of the odor at the camp outhouses. I haven't been able to figure any similarities between instances (recent eating habits, activities, etc.). We eat a round diet of meat, veggies and fruits. My bowel movements for the most part are good in regularity and consistency. The only medical condition I've had lately was with high blood pressure.
Avatar n tn Along with the H pylori I have this weird body odor which smells slightly of ammonia and somewhat meaty? I have this weird taste in my mouth as well. I was taking a prevpac for 14 days and I thought that would take care of the weird body odor as well as kill off the pylori bugs. My stomach feels better but I still smell weird? I also have bright red blood in my stool with each stool. At this point I have no idea what's going on. My pancrease, liver, spleen, and kidneys are normal.
Avatar n tn The perm smell is usually related to sulfur or ammonia products. You might also be detecting sewer gas leak if you have a cracked drain pipe some where. It might also be perm chemicals wafting through the air. Try to narrow it down.
Avatar f tn Another symptom the article gave was an ammonia smell in the nose. Someone commented once that they smelled ammonia. I truly believe this is the cause of my problems. Another thing that surprised me is that I remember taking pepto bismuth and it would make some difference. I read that pepto bismuth, activated charcoal and gas x are all good . I think I will follow a low sulphur diet and see if it helps. Joint pain is also a symptom which I do have and doctors has said it is not arthritis.

Avatar n tn This can be diagnosed by urine culture. Strong fruity odor is due to uncontrolled diabetes. Interestingly urine odor changes in menopause too. Urinary bladder infection and kidney infections do produce strong smelling urine. Another reason is dehydration. Strong ammonia smell is due to protein breakdown. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn I've noticed that from time to time, but becoming more frequent, my urine has a strong ammonia smell. The color is fairly normal - clear to golden - but the smell is there! I don't have pain or burning while urinating nor do I go to the toilet more often than usual. So what can be the cause? Thanks for any ideas.
Avatar f tn I thought it was more an ammonia odor. My surgery was Feb and the odor is gone but I still need panti liners for what the doc said was still present stitches, I think its urine. I think it is getting less all the time though so maybe he is right. I hope so.

Avatar f tn It is also possible that, if the concentration of ammonia is high enough, chlorine gas will form. If it starts to give off a strong odour and your eyes are burning, flush it and open a window or turn on the ventilation fan immediately, then get out of the room. Chlorine gas is highly toxic.
Avatar f tn I have heard of this and it isn't safe at all nor remotely accurate. Urine has ammonia in it and when ammonia and bleach mix it releases a very toxic gas, and almost always when urine hits bleach it will fiz or foam that's what creates the gas. I had a friend who tried this once in high school, (just for fun, she wasn't pregnant nor did she want to be) and she ended up in the hospital from the gas it created. Sorry didn't mean to scare you just stating the facts.
Avatar f tn t return to the doctor since being diagnosed over 2 years ago. He drinks 2 ltrs of wine a day. He has a terrible body odor of ammonia and the bathroom has a constant ammonia odor I find terribly offensive. I feel I need to clean it all the time. I think I started this post just to ask if he would excrete ammonia in his urine if his levels were high; it's beginning to appear to me that this is the case. Any idea if this is an early or later sign of the progression of this disease?
