ammonia

Avatar f tn maybe the beers caused you the alcoholic liver disease which lead to signs of liver failure like rise in ammonia.
Avatar m tn It is then absorbed and transported to the liver via the portal vein. When a liver is healthy, it rapidly and efficiently takes the ammonia from the blood stream and converts it to glutamine which can then go to the kidneys and turn into urea to be excreted. In those whose livers have built up large amounts of scar tissue, they're not able to process and clear the ammonia, so it enters the systemic circulation and starts to build up.
82818 tn?1206993414 the Dr ran an ammonia test and it came back as 106. I later found out you really are not to have any in your system. If so between 11 and 30. you can even go into a coma and then die. So if you feel you fit in that profile all it takes is a blood test please take. they are treating me with Enulose (Lactulose solution.) My liver was not getting filtering it so the next thing would be your kidneys so I guess my was not working. If any one else has had this problem please let me know GOD BLESS.
82818 tn?1206993414 Ammonia builds up when your liver is not working properly and can't clear the toxins in your blood stream. ammonia build up is very serious b/can be controlled w/meds. It's very serious and can cause unimaginable depression-unrelenting, chrushing depression that AD's don't touch. the mental confusion and emotional unstability are extreme. Having had it for yrs-untreated as ammonia-encephalopathy, all I can liken it to is Alzheimers' w/emotional, irrational outbursts.
Avatar m tn If you have decompensated cirrhosis, with elevated ammonia levels and hepatic encephalopathy I have see many patients say they have been prescribed Lactulose http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682338.html But you definitely need to have this conversation with your liver specialist .
1008841 tn?1293602560 that is to say, some patients who have hepatic encephalopathy (HE, or confusion due to liver dysfunction) do not have elevated ammonia levels, and sometimes ammonia levels can be elevated without apparent HE -- docs usually use the guidelines Hector provided above to diagnose HE as opposed to just declaring it based on ammonia levels. Avatar f tn My mum is 79 yrs old and for the past 11 days has had chronic diarrhoea she has visited her GP and a stool sample has been sent to be checked, in the meantime I have started to get a very strong smell of ammonia from her, It reminds me of peroxide and I was nearly smelling her hair thinking she may have had her hair permed, she has also had really bad abdominal pain and loss of appetite and breathlessness, how do I find out if she has high levels of ammonia, I am to believe that if she has it ca
Avatar n tn This can help reduce episodes of HE by reducing ammonia levels. Is he eligible for a liver transplant and willing to undergo the procedure?
Avatar n tn They appeared to come on at night after going to bed. She messed in her bed and wouldn't get out, was combative and child like, and she looked at us, but it was like she was looking though us. It appeared that when she had to urinate, it would wake her up enough to where she would want to go to the bathroom. She was out of the spell by the next day. For the next 2-2 1/2 months these spells became closer together and more severe. At one point she didn't know us.
Avatar m tn He had a severe stroke 5 yrs ago and is aphasic. He is a rehab facility and they tested his blood and came back with an ammonia level of 80 was does this mean?
Avatar m tn I have been on 3x daily ursodiol for stricture and I have pain on right side that waxes and wanes and bilirubin fluctuates between 1.8 and 2.2. is there any test I can do to evaluate whether this stricture is doing any damage to my liver? Should my hep c viral load be checked at some point? You are the best Dr.Schiano.Thank You! P.S.. Considering cicumstances with hep c type 1 on average what is the life span of tx liver?
412873 tn?1329178055 Does anyone know the name for the condition that leads to elevated ammonia levels in the blood? I think it happens when the liver is less able to remove toxins from the blood and can lead to confusion and other symptoms. Thanks for any input.
Avatar n tn I thought she had a stroke but the doctors are saying it is because her ammonia level in her liver is 178. It comes down but goes back up and she is not getting any better. She has been seen by GI, Neroligist, Cancer doctors and noone can tell me what is happening. She has been tested for hepatis and it was negative. Can you give any advice?
Avatar f tn High ammonia levels cause encepholapothy, which is serious and causes confusion and dementia in the brain. The drug Lactulose is usually given in large amounts to combat this.
Avatar n tn In one week my ammonia level has gone from 68 to 93. Only numbers off on liver function on 10/29 were ALT @ 61 (5 high). ALT on 10/21 test was 53. I've read all I can find on this but nowhere have I found anything mentioning high ammonia levels and "normal" liver functions. I'm having many symptoms associated with high ammonia. Last 2 months I've had a major problem with abdomen distentia. Abdomen and pelvis CT was performed on 10/30...
Avatar n tn Since this is the addiction forum, I presume we are talking about a case of liver failure (?). Liver metabolizes ammonia and during liver failure, the ammonia level is one of the things that leads to coma and eventually death. One comment for the sake of the forum—anyone who is looking at ammonia levels with concern must realize that surely his/her drinking days are OVER.
Avatar m tn I have 57 ammonia level in July and in August 97 ammonia level. Took Lactulose and two weeks later had 101 and added the antibiotic effixir (sp) just last week. Will this be chronis? Is there hope to get it down and keep it down? The test showed a slightly enlarged liver. Could this be caused from spreading fertilizer, coloring my hair and spraying poision? I cut out the protein except for fish, eggs and a few other things. Driking lots more water to flush my system. Any other suggestions.
Avatar n tn couldn't get up and was very confused. We rushed her to the ER and her blood work showed elevated calcium and ammonia levels. She hasn't spoken since..she is tied to a bed, with diapers on moaning. We know know they have found a small, very small lung cancer..and her calcium levels have returned to normal with IV medications. But her ammonia level is 104..dangerously high. She is bloated and they are biopsing her liver now. We fear liver cancer. She is almost in a coma now.
Avatar f tn I have a question, my mother passed away a couple of days ago and all I can think of was her last days at the hospital, my question is, when a person that is awaiting a liver transplant and has many other problems that are going bad and her ammonia levels keeps rising and out of a sudden they can't respond back to any questions, can they understand what you are saying to them?
Avatar m tn 2 1/2 days I had to go back, at my wifes constant battle with the Doctors that I was being dehydrated the new Doctor on the case was appalled that I had been on the IV, a constant drip of SODIUM, took me off the IV and the Lasix. Dehydration causes ammonia levels to rise. Now I take 3/30ml Lactulose a day, 2 Xifaxan daily and 1 Spirolactone Tab to keep potassium in check. Ammonia level down to 83 on my release. All blood levels are good, Liver hasn't gotten any worse in two yrs.
Avatar f tn hi tinker, high ammonia levels can affect liver and kidney. Drug or alcohol abuse is the main reason for this.

Avatar f tn My mother recently had TIPS procedure due bleeding from portal hypertension, alcoholic liver disease. She did fine through the procedure, but now her ammonia level is 68 and she is a little symptomatic. She was started on Lactulose 2 days ago and her last ammonia level showed an increase instead of decrease. What would cause this? Is it normal for it to rise before it goes down? She is having 3+ BM's daily so the medicine is doing its part.
Avatar m tn The lactulose is something that needs to be continued in order to remove the ammonia. If you Dad has a damaged liver this would be something he should take every day or his ammonia will go up. I hope he is better soon.
Avatar m tn my mother was very lethargic and we took her to ER. She had an ammonia levels of 169. would this be the reason and is this related to the liver?
Avatar n tn Hi, my spouse was diagnosed back in '87 with Hep C, we've taken all the trials about 5 I believe of the interferon. We're going for liver transplant eval @ UAB in June, this is second eval. My question is for those taking care of someone who is experiencing the confusion and agitation w/ high amm levels on how to give meds, oral lactulose etc., to help get the level down? I reached a point today when I was doing the airplane to get him to open his mouth! Didn't work though.
Avatar f tn His condition has been unchanged for 3 weeks. I called and asked what his ammonia levels were last week. The nurse gave me the run around and said they were within normal limits. Without the limits in fornt of me I don't know what they are. My husband went to Utah 2 days after I called, and all of a sudden they were checking ammonia levels and trating him with Lactolose, which I know is the appropriate Tx.
Avatar m tn I posted some previous info on my situation and people seemed to think I was over reacting because of this, but I've had nothing but symptoms ever since. A lot of my symptoms seemed to have been occurring sequentially.. one after the other. A couple overlap briefly but I'll give a short list. - First I got rash on my upper arms that lasted a couple days. - Then I got the worst "flu" I've ever had for about 2 weeks. - During that time I broke out with what I think are genital herpes.
Avatar n tn My husband's ammonia level is at 128...as a result of his HepC he has Class IV cirrhosis. They tell him his liver is too far gone and he's too high a risk for treatment. He's been "maintaining" for the past two years. He watches his diet and takes milk thisle. He's also a type II diabetic and since they've put him on Enulose for two weeks, the boy guy spends all his time in the bathroom...anyway my question is this...is 128 dangerously high?
30678 tn?1217992847 this will give you the 3 bowel movements a day needed to keep ammonia levels down, and at the same time help your liver to not form s much scar tissue. You can order it nline at vitacost or life extention. this anti fibrotic is recommended by our forums doctor...(HR) and it works so well I no longer need to take lactulose...which causes far more gas.
