My first guess was that it was produced by some bacteria in the urinary track, which secrete urease and degrade urea into ammonia. I know two types of urinary bacteria that can do this: Ureaplasma and Proteus. Neither was found when I did tests. But actually I had some concerns about that laboratory.
I have read quite many notes in the Internet, where people say it's normal when urine smells like ammonia, that it may be due to diet or exercise. I think it's ********.

I started bathing in a mixture of Dr. Bronners peppermint soap, borax and ammonia (I bought ammonia at dollar store also). In order to save money, just buy one bottle of ammonia from dollar store, pour into a plastic or rubber container (big enough to soak you feet) that I also bought from the dollar store. You should find that your itching and crawling sensation calms down immediately. Don't waste a lot of money on stuff people say has helped them.
Funny thing! I just broke out my neti pot for the first time in about 4 years using a mixture I found on the web (1 qt. water, 3 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. baking soda) I ran about 6 oz. through my nose and after I was done, for the next 10-15 minutes I sensed a distinct ammonia-like odor in my sinuses. It's what sent me googling and why I ended up here. No idea what caused it, but it's fading now. My wife said she can't smell it.

I have undergone several tests as per my health checkup, and Physician has confirmed nothing seriously wrong, and advised me not to worry and continue to remain sober However, because of my minor symptoms and the ammonia level, and information on the web worries me for encephalopathy.Could you help me in:
-If Encephalopathy is suspected, then also suspect is associated cirrhosis, and portal hypertension? But USG says No portal hypertension.
-What could be the reason of high ammonia?
They had me on a heart monitor for 24 hours yesterday because I had to go to the hospital for severe heart palputations( sorry if I misspelled that) and I felt faint while driving to work and I started getting black dots in my eyes and shaking extremely bad. So, my first thought was something like..maybe its my sugar? But I don't have diabetes or anything..So I freaked and went there.. my heart rate was 124 BP was 143/63.
But by the time we had his blood checked his levels were right smack in the middle of the range. Doctor said he was fine. So my question is can this ammonia gone untreated continue to rise and lower on its own. Because he has days that he seems fine and then days when he is not with me completely. He does not eat much as his taste buds are totally out of wack. Most foods taste very salty.And of course he does sleep alot.
I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I work in a paint department. I mix colors and clean up paint pretty much. Since I've worked there we have always used glass cleaner to clean the paint off the desk and our hands. I didnt know this until today but the cleaner we use has ammonia in it. The first time they found the problem he lost 30 pounds and it went away well he has since gained that back and a little more and the fatty liver popped back up so now he has to go on a diet again although he does not drink the dr told him not to drink at all it could be very harmful because of the state his liver is in now.

Urine normally doesn't have a very strong smell. If you get a whiff of something particularly pungent, you could have an infection or urinary stones, which can create an ammonia-like odor. Diabetics might notice that their urine smells sweet, because of excess sugar.
I smell ammonia. No one else can smell it. This happens off and on and in many different locations. I have read that this happens to people after a weight training session but I don't work out. I am a teenger. for a year i have been plagued with horrible nausea. i've been to the dr, i've had so many tests done, and all of them have come back saying i'm normal. the dr doesn't know what to do. sometimes i can't breathe. my hands shake. my nausea hightens dramatically. i'm constantly nauseated, but during these moments i really do think i'm going to puke, but i never do. i also get really dizzy during these moments sometimes. my whole body shakes.
