Common Questions and Answers about Ammonia and blood

Avatar m tn It is then absorbed and transported to the liver via the portal vein. When a liver is healthy, it rapidly and efficiently takes the ammonia from the blood stream and converts it to glutamine which can then go to the kidneys and turn into urea to be excreted. In those whose livers have built up large amounts of scar tissue, they're not able to process and clear the ammonia, so it enters the systemic circulation and starts to build up.
82818 tn?1206993414 Ammonia builds up when your liver is not working properly and can't clear the toxins in your blood stream. ammonia build up is very serious b/can be controlled w/meds. It's very serious and can cause unimaginable depression-unrelenting, chrushing depression that AD's don't touch. the mental confusion and emotional unstability are extreme. Having had it for yrs-untreated as ammonia-encephalopathy, all I can liken it to is Alzheimers' w/emotional, irrational outbursts.
82818 tn?1206993414 the Dr ran an ammonia test and it came back as 106. I later found out you really are not to have any in your system. If so between 11 and 30. you can even go into a coma and then die. So if you feel you fit in that profile all it takes is a blood test please take. they are treating me with Enulose (Lactulose solution.) My liver was not getting filtering it so the next thing would be your kidneys so I guess my was not working. If any one else has had this problem please let me know GOD BLESS.
Avatar f tn The first time they found the problem he lost 30 pounds and it went away well he has since gained that back and a little more and the fatty liver popped back up so now he has to go on a diet again although he does not drink the dr told him not to drink at all it could be very harmful because of the state his liver is in now.
1008841 tn?1293602560 It is listed as “Ammonia” on all the blood test results I've seen. It is separate from other tests and using one tube of blood. You say you are wondering about ammonia? Here is a brief overview.... Hepatic Encephalopathy (mental changes, coordination changes, sleeping changes) that can lead to coma.
Avatar n tn But by the time we had his blood checked his levels were right smack in the middle of the range. Doctor said he was fine. So my question is can this ammonia gone untreated continue to rise and lower on its own. Because he has days that he seems fine and then days when he is not with me completely. He does not eat much as his taste buds are totally out of wack. Most foods taste very salty. And of course he does sleep alot.
968560 tn?1307455098 Someone mentioned elevated blood ammonia levels. I'm feeling much better now. But I looked up Hyperammonemia and my symptoms were exactly like what I read. Confusion, anxiety, no appetite ect. I'm on week 45 fo tx,and like I said I'm 75% back to normal. I see Gastro on 1/04 and i'm going to discuss this with him then. I was just wondering if anyone had any experiences with this.
Avatar n tn I recently had an ammonia blood test and it came back 192 where the range of normal was 19-87. I am experiencing no symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy. My doctor is starting me on lactulose, and wants me to start treatment for the HCV immediately, he now says the 2 on the biopsy could be wrong "the liver is a large organ, we may not have gotten a good sample" his words.

14166303 tn?1433285761 Hi, I'm a 53 year old male and my ammonia blood test just came back at 89 umol/L. I bellieve the normal range is 10-45. I'm also taking Valproic Acid (2500 mg/ day), Lamictal (300 mg/ day) and Dilantin (500 mg/day) for seizures. All my other blood tests are in range, but sometimes my hands have a slight tremor. Please, can anyone tell me if this is a dangerously high level of ammonia in my blood, i.e., liver or kidney damaging?
Avatar m tn In patients with advanced cirrhosis, the liver is no longer able to metabolize the ammonia and convert it to urea so the ammonia builds up the in body producing and travels to the person's brain with psychological and other effects.
Avatar n tn Hep C causes high enzyme levels, a low white blood cell count, and high ammonia levels in the blood. Eating a lot of sodium can also cause elevated ammonia levels in the blood.
412873 tn?1329178055 Does anyone know the name for the condition that leads to elevated ammonia levels in the blood? I think it happens when the liver is less able to remove toxins from the blood and can lead to confusion and other symptoms. Thanks for any input.
Avatar f tn I'm not taking any medication, as the doctor precribed daily exercise rather than medication, and that is helping with the high blood pressure. Is this a sign that there's something else happening with my body?
Avatar m tn I have 57 ammonia level in July and in August 97 ammonia level. Took Lactulose and two weeks later had 101 and added the antibiotic effixir (sp) just last week. Will this be chronis? Is there hope to get it down and keep it down? The test showed a slightly enlarged liver. Could this be caused from spreading fertilizer, coloring my hair and spraying poision? I cut out the protein except for fish, eggs and a few other things. Driking lots more water to flush my system. Any other suggestions.
Avatar n tn couldn't get up and was very confused. We rushed her to the ER and her blood work showed elevated calcium and ammonia levels. She hasn't spoken since..she is tied to a bed, with diapers on moaning. We know know they have found a small, very small lung cancer..and her calcium levels have returned to normal with IV medications. But her ammonia level is 104..dangerously high. She is bloated and they are biopsing her liver now. We fear liver cancer. She is almost in a coma now.
Avatar f tn I have a question, my mother passed away a couple of days ago and all I can think of was her last days at the hospital, my question is, when a person that is awaiting a liver transplant and has many other problems that are going bad and her ammonia levels keeps rising and out of a sudden they can't respond back to any questions, can they understand what you are saying to them?
Avatar n tn He's in the hospital now, and they found his ammonia levels at 200. It comes and goes, but it seems that when he is the best is when he takes lactulose, and hopefully they'll raise his dose of it, because it just seems to be getting worse. The drug however, seems to really help him, ask the doctors about it.
12773 tn?1328916786 , but doc says there is alot of that going around. She was happy with the 11 lbs loss since starting the diet, and says will not run blood tests just yet, will wait till I drop some more, and hopefully my diabetes is back on check.. would be nice to be off these meds. But I am wondering about the ammonia smell.. I have read it could be my diet ? or my kidneys failing ? I am at a loss and just cannot get rid of this smell.. anyone have any similar symptoms or ideas ?
Avatar m tn I have been on 3x daily ursodiol for stricture and I have pain on right side that waxes and wanes and bilirubin fluctuates between 1.8 and 2.2. is there any test I can do to evaluate whether this stricture is doing any damage to my liver? Should my hep c viral load be checked at some point? You are the best Dr.Schiano.Thank You! P.S.. Considering cicumstances with hep c type 1 on average what is the life span of tx liver?
Avatar f tn The liver normally filters out ammonia, which is a toxic by-product from the break down of protein that we eat, but when the liver is too damaged it can't do that anymore, and the ammonia ends up in your blood, and goes to your brain, where it causes mental symptoms. That's hepatic encephalopathy, which is a complication of advanced cirrhosis. Lactulose is the standard treatment, it binds to the ammonia in the body and makes it pass through the intestines.
Avatar n tn I just found this foorum and posted tp Neurology. My Husband has the same problem. High ammonia(107) and mental confusion and sleeps all the time. He was in the hospital for 2 weeks in September after losing all his memory. His Cat, Mri, Liver function tests were all negative. He has been on Lactulose since then and his memory came back (still sleeps a lot) and his ammonia has stayed between 40-57) until yesterday, when he became midly confused.
Avatar n tn This site has a table about 1/2 way down that indicates what normal ammonia levels are at various ages. A little bit further down the article explains that ammonia levels do not necessarily correlate with the symptoms of encepalophy. I hope this helps.
Avatar m tn 2 1/2 days I had to go back, at my wifes constant battle with the Doctors that I was being dehydrated the new Doctor on the case was appalled that I had been on the IV, a constant drip of SODIUM, took me off the IV and the Lasix. Dehydration causes ammonia levels to rise. Now I take 3/30ml Lactulose a day, 2 Xifaxan daily and 1 Spirolactone Tab to keep potassium in check. Ammonia level down to 83 on my release. All blood levels are good, Liver hasn't gotten any worse in two yrs.
Avatar m tn We are using high doses a Vitamin C to help flush the brain of the ammonia. The blood levels came back into normal range with in 36 hours but the cause is undetermined.
Avatar n tn The Doctor now says it has turned into cirrohisis. My GI Doctor ran an ammonia test on me and said my level was high. He put me on lactulose. I started taking it three days ago. First day, terrible cramps, gas and bloating. Yesterday some diarriha and stomach pain. Today just waiting to see what is in store. Is anyone out there on this medication? Can you tell me is it always like this? Is there anything you can do to work and take this medicine at the same time?
Avatar n tn So sorry to hear about the loss of your son. Also sorry tht I can't answer your question about the ammonia level. My husband has ESLD and we still don't know what a 'normal' ammonia level is. Take care.
30678 tn?1217992847 It is broken down in the colon into products that pull water out from the body and into the colon. This water softens stools. Lactulose is also used to reduce the amount of ammonia in the blood of patients with liver disease. It works by drawing ammonia from the blood into the colon where it is removed from the body. I don't know much about this, but I know people with cirrhosis take it. Hope this helps...
Avatar m tn He had a severe stroke 5 yrs ago and is aphasic. He is a rehab facility and they tested his blood and came back with an ammonia level of 80 was does this mean?
