Avatar m tn Now according to revised guidelines by the american heart association for prevention of infective endocarditis, the antibiotic prophylaxis is not routinely recommended for all dental procedures. For patients with underlying cardiac conditions, prophylaxis is reasonable for all dental procedures that involve manipulation of gingival tissue or the periapical region of teeth or perforation of the oral mucosa. So, if the procedure involves the above manipulations, you may need prophylaxis.
Avatar n tn In addition, I now follow the recently revised American Diabetes Association guidelines for aspirin use in people with diabetes. Whereas the ADA used to recommend low-dose aspirin for every diabetic patient over the age of 40, their new guidelines suggest aspirin as a prevention strategy only in those with diabetes whose cardiovascular risk is above average. This includes men over age 50 or women over age 60 with at least one additional major risk factor.

Avatar f tn per the latest American Heart Association guidelines, antibiotic prophylaxis for endocarditis (a severe infection of the heart) is no longer recommended for MR, nor is it recommended for gastrointestinal procedures.
Avatar n tn In April 2007, the American Heart Association significantly scaled back their endocarditis prophylaxis recommendations, as it was felt that the risk was not nearly as high as initially thought for the majority of heart defects as well as for the majority of types of procedures. Aortic valve insufficiency ceased to be a higher risk defect after the new guidelines, unless you have had endocarditis before.
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor. My question is; Do I need or should I take a prophylactic like, Amoxicillin before having a BCC removed from my nose area? I had a very successful mvp repair done in Dec.96. I have a BAXTER ANNULOPLASTY ring installed. This BCC may be deeper than normal and somewhat larger, although the Dermatologist does not think it is to deep.I am a 65 year old man and in excellent condition. I do not take any meds. I was tested for penicillin reaction and passed.
Avatar m tn Your Total Cholesterol level according to the American Heart Association is HIGH. Meaning you have twice the risk of coronary heart disease. About 17% of adults are in this cholesterol level. LDL cholesterol level 160 to 189 mg/dL (4.10 to 4.85 mmol/l) is High. Triglyceride level less than 150 mg/dL (1.69 mmol/l) is Normal. I hope you are being treated for your high cholesterol. You don't want to wait until you have a heart attack or stroke. Have you seen a cardiologist?
Avatar f tn Therefore therapy should have never been initiated. Is there guidelines stated by the American Medical Association or American Heart Association with regards to this issue. Such as, healing time, therapy services, etc.? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Avatar n tn Gary- The higher the HDL the better but HDL is a part of total cholesterol (TC) and if TC is low it is hard for HDL to be that high. Still, the American Heart Association guidelines say a HDL of <35 is an independent risk factor. I don't know about adding points to HDL if one is following a low-fat diet or what the data is that this doctor is basing this on. As far as treatment of low HDL this will be based on your doctors recomendation and your overall total risk.
Avatar n tn Going by the new guidelines of the American Heart Association 120/80 is "pre-hypertensive", I think this is ridicuilous, but these are the new guidelines.
Avatar n tn Although stroke may present with headaches, there are not enough studies done linking cluster migraines directly to stroke. Risk factors recognized by the American Heart Association include age, sex, gender, family history, race, and prior stroke, heart attack or TIAs.
