Ambien side effects in the elderly

Common Questions and Answers about Ambien side effects in the elderly

ambien

Avatar f tn I was wondering what to expect in terms of side effects from quitting.Anybody out there been through this? I think i see now why the addiction psychiatrists wont prescribe ambien.....my gp doc did that, and yes she knew about my addiction to the pain meds.
Avatar f tn Thanks. I HATE drug side effects stories. My elderly mom's hgb dropped to 8.5 on Arava (for rheumatoid arthritis), I had a personality change on Ambien (so bubbly I couldn't even stand myself). We have to really be on the watch every time we add a new medication. I worry the most about people who require multiple meds. Think I will start taking B-12. Thanks again.
1286779 tn?1400012806 I think Jaybay just gave you great advice. Lots of elderly have different side effects than the more common ones. Medications can easily interact and sometimes medications that have been fine for a long time all of a sudden aren't. A gerentologist probably is the best place to look for answers. When my mom was alive, we had a few kinks with her medications.
Avatar n tn Combining Ambien and Seroquel can cause central nervous system and respiratory depressant effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Please discuss with your doctor for alternate medications. In the meantime, I would strongly caution you not to drive or operate heavy machinery while on these medications as you might injure yourself or others. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn The symptoms could be the side effects of the medications. The combination of clonazepam and unisom can cause central nervous system and respiratory-depressant effects which may be increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Discuss your symptoms with your consulting doctor he may change the dose or the medications.
Avatar n tn There are interactions between these drugs Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients.
1687929 tn?1319426011 I also take xanax so what I do is take my xanax an hour or so before going to bed and take the ambien when I go and lay down. When I was prescribed ambien I tried taking it while still being up and it didn't help me at all. Taking it right when I go to bed seems to help. I sleep a little longer and heavier. Hope this helps a little bit.
1246883 tn?1285547973 I immediately started to gain weight. And stopped the Seroquel immediately (mid Dec). I know this is one of the side effects. I gained about 5lbs. Being 5'9" and weighing 135, I felt the 5 extra pounds would come off with eating better and a few more yoga classes . But the weight kept coming. I got down to a dietary intake of about 1000 cals. But that mad no difference.
Avatar f tn My Dr gave it to me in the hospital no side effects
Avatar f tn the white Zoldepam is 10 mg the ones that you were taking before were probably 5 mg i take the 10 mg and have for about 3 years i have had no side effects are you sure it is the ambien and not some other med i have had 1 perso tell me that they thought it was the ambien that made them sleep walk one night, but i do not know you mught look up side effects for ambien luck jo
Avatar m tn Drug Interaction Checker Klonopin is in a class of drugs called Benzodiapezines. Benzodiapezines are contraindicated when suffering from depression, however, anxiety999, you would have to discuss it perhaps with the prescribing doctor. The elderly metabolise benzodiazepines more slowly than younger individuals and are also more sensitive to the effects of benzodiazepines, even at similar blood plasma levels.
Avatar n tn I was allowed to take benedryl (sominex) up to 200 mg per night throughout TX. Now I am post TX and the insomnia has not yet left, so they prescribed Ambien and Lunesta for me (i grew allergic to something in the benedryl). They are all harmless to liver but the ambien & lunesta do cause dependence so I alternate them: Ambien for a couple nights, then lunesta (which does not work as well for me) for one night.
Avatar m tn Im concerned about side effects from certain meds. that an elderly person was prescibed from a psychiatrist. If you maybe depressed and never took psychotropic drugs, can one side effect lead to screaming uncontrollably. Does your brain reject chemicals that the body doesn't understand.
Avatar f tn Hi, I think alot of it has to do with the ambien but xanax also has alot of w/ds too. I know for me, the ambien made me a nervous wreck the day after I would take it. I also was doing alot of stuff in the middle of the night that i didn't remember doing. Ambien is a very strange drug and I am very glad I stopped taking it. I felt better right away.
Avatar f tn thanks for you response. I didn't really feel anything but then again I'm not sure. I did fill it again and started yesterday. I guess I always thought I was taking too much meds. I have 2 dif meds for diabetes and I also take ambien at night to sleep. I have a hard time sleeping through. I just thought if I eliminated one med it would be that much less. I think I was wrong because I was in tears yesterday and at the store while I was in line picking up the celexa.
Avatar f tn Can the ambien I take every night slow the healing progress in my brain I'm 16 days off hydrocodone
Avatar n tn My Mom is 92 years old. Has been living on her own in Elderly housing for 20 years. Her dementia consisted of repeating and repeating, forgetting who visited, etc. but went throughout her normal activities w/some services very well and very happiy. Always knew us but was starting to forget other people but after prompting she would be ok. 3 weeks ago she developed a very severe resistant UTI and then got c-dift (not sure how to spell that). Anyway ended up dilusional, confused, etc.
Avatar n tn Are you taking anything else? Seroquel at such a low dose probably shouldn't be causing those side effects. Have you tried trazodone or ambien or rozerem?
1922425 tn?1322702653 I think that the symptoms he is experiencing right now (post incivek) are very similar/identical to the side effects he had with previous two treatments. For the itching, he takes Atavan. For the insomnia, he takes Ambien. For dry mouth, he uses Biotene products.
Avatar n tn Is your Mom seeing a Gerontologist? They are the true specialists in the issues of aging. The next best in an Internal Medicine Physician. If you Mom is not seeing either one of those I would encourage you to get her a referral for her to be seen by a Gerontologist. Family Practice Physicians do not have the expertise to treat a complicated geriatric patient. You need to be as involved as you are comfortable being. If you think you should be questioning her care and medications than do so.
