Common Questions and Answers about Ambien gaba

ambien

1580703 tn?1651904887 ve discovered that to treat my crippling sleep breathing disease I need to use an alpha GABA agonist like klonopin or ambien. is there a medication that is even better like clorazapete or GABA acid OTC? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GABA_receptor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GABA_agonist what does this mean, which disease do I have? Thanks!
Avatar n tn As a rule, people who are gaba deficient have difficulty relaxing and use tend to use alcohol and downers/benzos more so than others...
Avatar m tn Hey Bear, the sleep meds like Ambien and Lunesta are hypnotics. They use the same receptors (GABA) as benzos. I'm an Ambien survivor. I got hooked on 10mgs for just 9 months, and it took 4 months of tapering to get off of them. That was 3 years ago. I still don't sleep good.
Avatar f tn Which one are you currently taking? I have not kept my feelings about ambien a secret here. AMBIEN almost ruined my life. It almost caused me to kill myself many times over, and I have no doubt if I would have kept using it I would not be able to type this because I would be DEAD! Go back and read my journals about the ambien. It has become my mission in life to show people what could happen with that drug.
5061022 tn?1363018223 The doctors have put me on any and every kind of sleeping pill....the only thing that worked was ambien xr but now thats not even working so I am taking a store bought sleeping pill, ambien and clonazapam all at once...I mix it up each night but I am taking way more than I should or that is prescribed. I can't sleep well without them tho but I can't really sleep with them either since they don't work well anymore....
Avatar n tn KLON and AMBIEN work on the same receptors, the GABA receptors; I went on a 6 month taper to stop KLON but was taking AMBIEN as well- I later found out they work the same receptors so my 6 month KLON taper was wasted ! I went to my internist who informed me they have short half lives which are HARDER to taper from; short answer-- I started Valium, while another benzo, has a longer half-life and for some reason, is easier to stop.
Avatar m tn I posted this in the General health section but I'm going to re-post here as this seems a more appropriate forum for this: So about 6 months ago I was stricken by anxiety and severe panic attacks after my psych doc decided to cold turkey stop my Vyvanse because my resting heart rate was getting too high. I dealt with what felt like a constant panic attack 24 hours a day for nearly 2 months. To give you an idea how bad it was, I lost nearly 40 lbs in the short span of time.
Avatar f tn Well i'm 6 months clean today. Just wish I hadn't started the Gabapentin and ambien again. This is day 2 off the gabapentin, will take the amitriptyline tonight instead of the ambien should be off it in a few days also. I sooooooo need encouragement.
Avatar f tn t mention before but along with cold turkey from lortab I also stopped taking my ambien that I had taken religiously for several months as well. Had no idea you could have WD from them. Does anyone know how much longer it will be until sleep comes back? I think I've really messed myself up with this one. Any experience with stopping ambien suddenly? I really just need peace of mind at this point. I'm exhausted.
Avatar m tn Like the natural occurring neurotransmitter GABA (amino acid), it bonds to the GABA-B metabotropic receptor, and provides a calming action like the natural occurring neurotransmitter, and similar to other GABA agonists. There is dispute in the literature about whether or not Phenibut binds to the GABA-A ionotropic receptor, which is responsible for the actions of benzodiazepines, barbiturates, z-drugs, and for some of the effects of ethanol.
Avatar f tn It seems that every time I stop taking ambien for a few days and I'm feeling side effects. When I wake up my head is killing me, my kidneys are killing me, and I can't stop sudden movement. I have tried to stop several times though my doctors and with therapy but its like nothing works. I try to stick with it but if I have to deal with worst side effects. I can't believe I've been in this mess since '09 and I'm taking too many to even my prescriptions out.
1691275 tn?1322327507 I did notice, however, that a full dose of Ambien (which works on the same GABA receptors) made me feel peculiarly clear-headed last week, which leads me to believe I may have developed benzo withdrawal and the Ambien merely signaled that. My doctor, on the other hand, doesn't believe that benzo withdrawal could last four months, and is further unconvinced by the fact that my symptoms started before I stopped the Xanax and weren't affected when I did stop.
Avatar f tn Hello again everyone! Boy it has been a very long day for me. I woke up yesterday morning a little after seven a.m. and have been awake since...unable to sleep. I have been off the Oxy's for almost a full well but ran out of my Ambien on Saturday. I am thinking the new insomnia has more to do with the Ambien than the Oxy's. I was taking 1 sometimes 2 Ambien a night to fall asleep....
20003388 tn?1515166040 First, if you take a benzo, you have to stop the valerian -- they both target the same neurotransmitter (now, if you really know your herbs, if you take the valerian far apart in time from the time you take your benzo, you can do it, but nobody not very well educated about herbs should take valerian and a benzo. Second, when do you take your magnesium? Benzos and antidepressants and other drugs that target brain neurotransmitters use the magnesium pathway to get past the blood/brain barrier.
222369 tn?1274474635 Ambien binds to a subunit of the GABA receptor, similar to benzodiazepines, so I think that a benzo taper would be reasonable. I would prefer using phenobarbital, which binds to a different subunit of the same receptor complex, just because phenobarb has less addictive potential and I would be a little less concerned that the person would run off with the detox medication and have a party.
Avatar f tn Thank you everyone.
Avatar f tn i don't believe anyone has mentionned gaba, yet it is supposed to be a sleeping and calming amino. does anyone know if it helps? i am thinking rls is a brain thing and maybe there is an amino for it.
1326513 tn?1276518001 Probably not -- ativan targets GABA receptors. Don't know how frequently you take ativan. GABA isn't a particularly effective supplement for anxiety. For one thing, it can cause anxiety. For another, and most important, it doesn't cross the blood/brain barrier well. A better way to get GABA is to take taurine, which along with B-6 is what the body uses to make GABA, but since you're taking the ativan, I'd be careful about this.
Avatar f tn First, if you're on any drug such as benzos or neurontin that target GABA don't take this. Second, GABA supplements don't usually cross the blood/brain barrier, so they don't usually work. The best way to supplement for GABA, assuming you're not on medication that targets it, is to take the pseudo amino acid taurine and B6, which together with other co-factors make GABA in the body.
Avatar m tn Its good for calming you down. Vicki is right about the melatonin, and also Gaba helps. All you need is a teaspoon. Hope this helps!
1214626 tn?1288106214 Benzodiazepines like Xanax, Valium and Ativan and Sedatives/Hypnotics like Ambien, Sonata and Lunesta, work to increase the effectiveness of GABA in your brain. To the extent that they are successful, these drugs will produce a calming effect. You can use them with GABA. GABA will work without them also. You definitely want to wean yourself off the Xanax, which it sounds like you are doing. Good job.
Avatar m tn Its not an exact science since everyone responds somewhat differently to all the various medications. From my own experience, the ambien withdrawl could cause several restless nights until you wean off of it. I found the trazodone to be of little help, its an antidepressant which in theory should help you sleep. You probably will have to have some kind of taper even with the trazadone though it shouldn't be as severe as from the ambien.
Avatar m tn Effective 36 hours ago, I am Ambien free! After almost five months of Ambien hell, I am free! I will *never* again take another pill for as long as I live. It took me six weeks to taper from 20mg to 2.5mg, and at that point I just walked away. It wasn't the most pleasant of times, but it's doable. There is hope for all of you out there - if I can do it, you can do it. Go see your doctor. Tell him you want off of these pills from hell. Follow his advice - it can be done.
Avatar f tn In the past I have taken melatonin, Zanaflex, valerian, 5-HTP, GABA, Phenibut, Soma, triazolam, Benadryl. I think that the zanaflex was the most helpful. If I could choose I'd pick the zanaflex but my doc will not rx non-psych meds. I see my psychiatrist in two months, what are some alternatives that I can discuss with my doc? Has anyone ever had a doc. say it is ok to take 20mg zolpidem?
Avatar f tn Are you weaning off with the help of your doctor or are you going it alone? I know when I took it upon myself to wean off of zoloft I did it over a month and my psychiatrist told me that if WE had done it, she would've weaned me off over a couple of months. I've had problems with insomnia too but I don't think it's related to the SSRI. She gave me ambien and that seems to help.
Avatar f tn t handle them either (I apparently am very sensitive to that type of med and they make me EXTREMELY hyper and actually increase my pain a LOT) I currently take hydrocodone for pain and ambien for sleep. A while back I was having trouble with the Ambien not working and my doctor tried me on trazodone, but once again, I reacted badly to it and rather than it helping me sleep, it made me hyper and I was not able to sleep for 2 1/2 days while taking it!
Avatar f tn I have always had sleep difficulty. Is it O.K. that I am taking Ambien at night? I have been sleeping good but would hate to find out it contains anything that would hinder this process? I also read a lot about anxiety as something that seems to come later in the process. I am on Cymbalta and Wellbutrin and have been for over a year. Do these help with that or should I be asking for a dosage adjustment during this phase?
