Ambien and rem sleep

Common Questions and Answers about Ambien and rem sleep

ambien

Avatar f tn I am on Ambien for insomnia but I still wake up at 3 or 4 in the morning and can't get back to sleep - so often I will take 3 mg of sublingual Melatonin. It puts me back to sleep, but I have vivid dreams, and it almost feels like I am even more exhausted when I wake up from them. Does melatonin give you all three stages of REM or is it mostly to help with the most superficial phase, the dream phase?
Avatar f tn I recently had a sleep study done and it showed no apnea, no REM and on average waking up 18 times an hour. I was but on Nuvigil 150mg and have been taking for 4 days but I don't want to take it anymore for several reasons. One it only lasts about 6 hrs and then I hit a wall. The second reason is I just feel creepy inside and my hrt rate on average is up 15-20 bpm. I just called the Doc to tell them about it and they are supposed to call back.
Avatar m tn The two main things looked for to diagnose narcolepsy on polysomnography are very short onset of sleep (typically under 10 minutes) and excessively early onset of REM sleep. The sleep architecture may also vary in the total amount of REM sleep (excessive in narcolepsy).
Avatar m tn Two and a half months ago, I randomly contracted insomnia. I'd never experienced it in my life before. It just spontaneously happened. I recently graduated from college, but I wasn't feeling any conscious stress or anything. Suddenly I got insomnia, and couldn't go to sleep for 3 nights in a row. So I'm assuming something biological happened? The only thing...
1323549 tn?1276178147 I've found meds only make it worse for me. I have no trouble getting to sleep, but usually BING awake at about the 4 or 5 hour mark. Ambien CR (continued release) works great all night long and without the hangover of immediate release Ambien. BUT - I'll be honest, I quit using it due to really weird side effects like nightmares and acting them out whether it was talking, screaming, walking around - whatever. By morning I wouldn't remember a thing.
1299871 tn?1274701870 t the best medication to take for sleep either. It interferes with normal sleep cycles such as REM sleep. While you think you had a good night's sleep, you really didn't because your brain didn't get the full rest it needs. That alone can cause major depression or worsen it. It's time to talk to your doctor and make some changes to your medications.
Avatar f tn for 6 weeks I refused any medicine and finally broke down after weeks of no REM sleep and sometimes No sleep at all. It consumed my life and rendered me unable to work. I am seeing glimpses of my old self and am feeling much better. Eating right and exercising as well. Not sure the time limit on this delightful experience. months years? I do hope I am doing the right thing.
6074055 tn?1378958419 Not sure how a sleep study will help. My experience there is the study measures how much REM sleep you get and if you are getting sufficient oxygen and have a reasonable heart rate.. maybe a few other things...but nothing that would explain why you are never tired.. unless it shows you are really sleeping 7 or 8 hours and just don't believe it. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Have you tried Ambien or Sonata? I take Ambien (have been on it for about 4 years) - some nights it works well and others it's like I've taken a tic tac - but there are nights when nothing short of getting hit over the head with a hammer is going to help me sleep! I used to be on the CR version of the Ambien, until my insurance decided it wasn't going to cover that formula any longer, so now I'm back to the 10mg dose.
653169 tn?1303446369 I have generalized anxiety and Insomnia that are usually well controlled, but lately are not. I have not slept hardly at all for 3 days. I've gotten 1-2 total hours on average a night with no REM sleep. My anxiety is terrible, and the longer I don't get adequate sleep the worse its getting. I take ambien and klonopin 1mg twice daily. Has anyone got any suggestions? I would appreciate anyone's comments or further questions.

1225178 tn?1318980604 Yes, I am taking Ambien CR, but I have been having to take some kind of sleep aid for years because I have narcolepsy which means the brain tries to go into REM sleep in the daytime, and can't go into REM sleep at night, so when you reach that stage, you wake up. Before tx, the only time I ever dreamed was when I'd take a nap in the daytime. I'm actually enjoying dreaming at night, but it is so strange... and I have to win this argument with my husband, you know.
Avatar f tn His medication was increased as well as Lorazepam. He takes Ambien CR to sleep. About 2 months ago, while in REM he stated acting his nightmares. He has pulled my hair, punched the back of my head, and kicked my leg. He has thrown the bedside lamp and punch the mattress. He abruptly wakes up after acting out, remembers what he had done but vaguely remembers his nightmare. I feel I am in danger. Could this possibly be happening because of his medication? Is this a sleeping disorder?
1067022 tn?1257773762 00am and 2:00am. I have had 2 sleep studies and they recommend Ambien Long Acting. It didnt work. I feel fully awake and get up for the rest of the night and work on the computer or something. No sleep apnea or resless leg syndroem or anything. Studies show I just wake up after a short REM cycle. I have tried Ambien, and a lot of herbal medicines. Nothing works.
558096 tn?1255887002 ve heard some not so funny stuff about ambien and rozerem and people walking, eating, and driving in their sleep. Please note that when using sleep aids your brain and body do not usually reach the REM stage that is needed for nightly healing and repair.
Avatar m tn As rightly mentioned the patients with sleep apnea have frequent awakenings in the night due to blockade of windpipe and lack of oxygen, they are often tired and spend less time in REM sleep. REM sleep is that part of sleep cycle where dreams occur.
Avatar n tn The first time it happened, I wondered what was making my bed vibrate and then realized it was me. I have been on ambien for several years and have started using the generic form in the past 4-8 months. This problem started in the last 4 months. I also had a period where my memory was literally shot. I had days where I wondered if something had happened or if I'd dreamed it, I was in such a fog. Could all of this be coming from the generic ambien?
12594947 tn?1426138835 Also, alcohol has no therapeutic use in sleep medicine. In fact, sleep specialists recommend that people wish sleep disorders minimize their alcohol intake, and never drink before bedtime as that can cause a disordered type of sleep (even if it subjectively seems like it's "helping" you sleep).
Avatar m tn Eddie, 29 days off of HydroCodone here and I'm finally getting some real sleep. I used hydro off and on for 18 months, I was taking it on a steady basis for the last 3 months. My doctor has helped me along with the WDs from getting off it. He said Hydro doesn't allow REM sleep. So I didn't get the correct kind of sleep. And I'm assuming you might not have slept correctly for 35 days according to your post. From my experience you should get back to normal sleep soon, I hope!
Avatar n tn The formal way of diagnosing narcolepsy is to undergo a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) which is a daytime study after an overnight sleep study. If you're REM sleep deprived in general, you'll have what's called REM rebound, where you go into REM much quicker than normal. You may want to mention your symptoms the next time you meet with your sleep doctor.
1845824 tn?1333374427 I was put on ambien for sleep and klonopin for anxiety. I want to take a nap but can't took my benzo and still can't. Took two and still can't... I dont want to trade drugs. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.. feel low and alone. sux 9 days no opiots.. Whats goin on?
Avatar m tn So I started taking half at bedtime and half at 3 am and I goo back to sleep and sleep a decent amount more hours ! Feel great in the morning and do well all day! I do find that if I am not in bed when they hit, I may fall asleep standing up and wake up when I hit the floor! If somebody wakes me up to talk, I don't remember the conversation! So leave us sleeping mummies alone lol! No bad stuff for me!
Avatar f tn Hey girl,I missed ya over the weekend.I still have trouble with sleep now and then and even when I do get sleep I haven't passed the 5 hour mark yet. What type of melatonin do you have?I had the regular pills but then I think nauty posted something about the sublingual ones and they work alot better for me.I've seen some people say to take benadryl.I know how frustrating the no sleep thing can be.I just keep hanging in there for that first full 8 hour sleep.Hang in there.Peace.
Avatar n tn I fell asleep in all 4 of my naps and entered REM in 30 secs. on one of them. My average fall asleep time or sleep latency was 3.6 mins and average time to enter REM was 5.4 mins. This was my first time having MSLT, but my other 3 overnight sleep test pretty consistent. I get more REM than I need though, but no Stage 3 or 4. My 2nd sleep test was performed taking 4.5 ml of Xyrem at bedtime and again at around 2:00 am and I still got less than 5 minutes of Stage 3 or 4 sleep.
612551 tn?1450022175 During sleep, the body cycles between non-REM and REM sleep. Typically, people begin the sleep cycle with a period of non-REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep. Dreams generally occur in the REM stage of sleep. A lot of studies are going on to study the importance of REM sleep, which is the dream phase of sleep. Psychologists generally agree that achieving the dream state of sleep is a critical element for maintaining good mental health.
Avatar m tn However, and this is the caveat that I think is most significant in your case, REM sleep does have an important function. During REM sleep, we dream, and during this time we are "consolidating" memories and things we learned during the day.
Avatar m tn That is how I got dx with Narcolepsy. I get no stage 4 sleep and very little REM at night. However, I go into almost immediate REM during time I fall asleep during the day.
Avatar f tn My husband stops breathing and is trying to jerk and wake himself up to breathe. He has sleep apnea. If he has bouts where he isn't breathing then he needs to see a doctor. Just checking.
