415109 tn?1304890182 We have a 9 yr old Low Chen who for the past 2 weeks has been hacking and coughing almost constantly. He did have valley fever 2 years ago and was treated successfully and his titer is negative. He coughs but doesn't cough anything up-just sounds like he is going to choke or get something out. sometimes rubbing his throat gently and calming him down will make it quit but as soon as you stop he starts again. He is in otherwise good health.

Avatar f tn As veterinarians we see a lot of similar cases each week in practice and it is likely allergies. The coughing comment is quite worrisome, though. Coughing is usually not related. Please see your veterinarian again and have him or her listen closely to his chest and take chest xrays. I hope a problem is not found, but respiratory problems are not something to wait around on.
871111 tn?1248992972 Coughing is an unusual manifestation of allergy in dogs, although I have diagnosed one or two dogs with allergic bronchitis based on chest xrays and tracheal wash/cultures to evaluate the type of inflammation and bacteria present in the lungs; you are right, allergies should not get better with antibiotics, her improvement suggests that bacterial infection is a component of the problem, although infection is likely secondary to another underlying cause.
Avatar m tn There are many possible causes here. Food allergies and allergies in general being my top two suspects. My Australian Cattle Dog turned out to be allergic to a high quality dog food that we'd used for years. We now feed a grain free diet of venison. No more coughing. You milage may vary here. Try switching up your dogs diets and see if it helps.
Avatar f tn I have a 15 yr old cocker spaniel who has started coughing or hacking. She has no other distressess. She is still active to a point, happy and eager to chase small animals. She only coughes when she lays down. Is she developing a heart condition?
Avatar f tn In '77 I found I had. a lot of allergies: birds, cats, dogs, rabbits, cows, horses, dust, mold, grasses & was told to stay out of the night air. I have asthema due to smoking parents. For last 25 yrs I've had bronchitis every January but the cough would last 3 months. I got bronchitis January this yr & again twice in March. I still have a cough. It starts as a tickle in my throat but after the sun goes down it gets worse. When I go to bed the coughing gets so bad that I throw up.
Avatar f tn So we will see how that goes. She was tested earlier in the year for the basic allergies like to cats, dogs, eggs etc and they all came back negative. Maybe I will have her tested again.
Avatar n tn Reasons for Coughing: OK, For starters, you need to rule out Heart Problems....The xray will not only show the heart, but also the lungs...This is important.... With Heart Disease, the weak heart cannot pump as well...Fluid builds into the lungs causing the cough..The cough is usually MOIST like they're choking on congestion...Actually, they are...The cough is worse in the mornings & during periods of running, playing & excitement....Fluid will show in an x ray of the lungs.....
874521 tn?1424116797 Food allergies only account for 10 percent of allergy problems in dogs. Dogs often can not tolerate soy products, wheat, corn, beef, pork, chicken, milk, whey, eggs, fish, chemical preservatives, or artificial sugars in their food. Determining the food allergen can be time consuming. First, eliminate all the possible allergens from the diet, by using a home made diet consisting of a protein and a starch the dog has not eaten before.
Avatar m tn m a 27 year old male and have worked in front of a computer for many years now. I related the headaches and pain to eye strain and tension headaches. I had an eye exam, my vision was still great but the doctor did prescribe me some computer glasses. So far, this hasnt seemed to help much. My neck does get tight and my wife who is a massage therapist, performs deep tissue massages on me and it does help relive the headaches, but not the overall pressure I experience.
Avatar m tn Dog allergies are very common and due to saliva of the dog. “Allergy to dogs is relatively common, as dog allergen can be found in public places, including daycare facilities.” “For people with dog allergy, avoidance of dogs is the mainstay of therapy. Allergy medications are likely to help control symptoms, but in many instances symptoms may persist if the person owns one or more indoor dogs. Allergy shots may also be a good treatment option for people who are allergic to their pet dogs.
Avatar n tn Most dogs with food allergies also have environmental allergies. Environmental allergies don't have to occur only from things that are outside. Dust mites, storage mites and indoor molds are high allergens also. Since allergens penetrate dogs skin it is good to bathe your dog very frequently (once per week) with medicated, hypoallergenic shampoo. Environment allergies are impossible to control. A Hepa air filter will help for indoor and outdoor allergens.
Avatar f tn s rather common in dogs! Dogs can live many ,many years on medications just like humans can.....Meds. to improve function of the heart & also lasix to clear fluid from the lungs......An EKG or ECG can detect what part of the heart is having a problem.....They usually run around $100.....Some Vets will suggest this test, some will not...They will just go ahead and treat... Next- Kennel Cough- This is a virus and antibiotics will do nothing.....
Avatar n tn You need to make an appointment with your vet to see what the cause of the redness is. If it's in both ears, it could be caused by allergies or he could have a yeast infection in his ears. A yeast infection, while not as easy to clear up as a run-of-the-mill ear infection, CAN be cured with medication.
Avatar f tn I have such a itchy throat, and i keep coughing i hate it.. its annoying..
Avatar m tn ( I am a chronic allergy sufferer and this is what my doctor told me as a child). Unfortunately, doctors seem reluctant to test and diagnose allergies in young children. My poor son had to wait until he was 12 before I could give him some real help even though he suffered from age 2 and up. This is very frustrating as a parent and pediatric allergy medicine does not work. Try having your son drink some water before bed and sleep with his head slightly elevated to see if that helps.
Avatar n tn I would take her to her physician as soon as you are able, it is certainly not healthy for her to keep coughing and vomiting. The coughing will hurt her insides if it is too strong and vomiting will prevent her from getting her much needed nutrients from food, etc. I really am not able to tell you what it is, it could be a number of things, and, as I said, it would be best if she saw a doctor. Please let me know the outcome, I know she must be miserable.
Avatar n tn Has she been tested for allergies? Are there pets in the house, or a smoker in the house? Could you have done remodeling, painting, new carpet, mold or mildew?
1008544 tn?1256099088 ---check your pillow and comforter for feathers---dust the room in which you sleep in---make sure you sleep in a cold room----and eat fruits and vegetables. i have done this and it has helped a lot, also wash your sheets and pillow cases frequently. good luck.

Avatar f tn It is September, and many of the fall plants that affect humans with allergies also affect dogs. Also, like humans, dogs can develop allergies at any time, even if they have never been affected by them before. However, like with anything else, the only way to tell would be to take him to a vet for evaluation. Please post back and let us know what happens.
1703762 tn?1307474110 Later on Sunday evening, when we arrived back home, my pup Tedi began coughing. Not frequently but once every few minutes. Awhile later around bedtime she settled down and kind of seem depressed, which isnt like her because she's usually in a playful mood from morning to bedtime. My dad and I just thought she was tired or she missed my grandma. But the next day she was still coughing, and also later at night she settled down and was acting like she wasnt feeling good.
Avatar m tn I'm allergic and I know it! I've been allergic ever since I was a little boy and I've learned to live with that. My problem is that during the last couple of years, I seem to get more and more sensitive to the allergens that trigger my reactions, as well as more prone to have shortness of breath as a primary reaction! This year, although spring hadn't affected me so far, I happened to catch a cold (whether it was the flu, a cold or bacterial infection I don't know!
Avatar n tn No, I have never smoked. There was no reference to allergies. Am I to conclude that in your opinion allergies have nothing to do with this annoying cough? I will try to find a cough clinic. I was just talking over the phone to a old acquaintance that I had not heard from in 8 yrs and the first thing she said was, " Do you still have that cough?" I was blown away that this cough has become such a part of my identity.
209987 tn?1451935465 Usually ear allergies are food related.....Your dogs feet could be food related, environmental, or toxins she walks on daily such as floor cleaners & carpet fresheners.....Try soaking her feet in an Epson Salt bath to get a little relief....This should help..... The sneezing can be caused by any number of things , usually dust mites or again anything she comes in contact with on a regular basis.... You can try the benadryl....The dose is 1mg. per lb. every 8hrs......
Avatar n tn For the past 3 days she has been coughing, honking and has the sniffles. Last night we bought a vaporizer to help rid the symptoms. Is there anything else I should do? Bennadryl? Robotusin? How much is should we give her? Thanks.
Avatar m tn My 5 year old miniature schnauzer is 5 years old. She has started coughing and is becoming more frequent. It is almost a panting cough? She also has a bad odor. Which has been going on for a month or two.(odor). I have listened to her chest with a stethescope and she is breathing fast and it sounds thick and dry. I thoguht it was maybe just a case of dust because we mulched leaves (oak and pecan) and we didn't have a bag on the mower and it got pretty dusty.
