926187 tn?1244016839 i wouldnt say no calories are absorbed --- i went through a phase like that..and smtimes i do that too. but i went through a period of an entire yr C/S everything --- healthy and unhealthy food. they say sugar begins digestion at the mouth --- therefore calories are already absorbed then. Theres also the thing with oily food --- u might not be getting solids in your mouth --- but oils, salts, seasonings, sugars all binds up with saliva. Its a lot of unhealthy stuff being consumed.
Avatar m tn I think you're on to something. Alcoholic beverages are one of the most common sources of "empty" calories - they do not provide nutrition (for the most part), and a typical alcoholic beverage has at least 150 calories. Count the number of alcoholic drinks you have a week and multiply by 150 - it adds up pretty quick!
Avatar f tn You surely should not drink any alcohol at all while taking pain medication, or any medication for that matter.
Avatar f tn Do calories begin to count the second you put food into your mouth, or does it need to digest first?
Avatar f tn t even look at carbs the same way anymore! You can even pass up potato chips. I read an article about alcohol in a diet. It faulted alcohol for being even easier to burn than carbs, so your body stores all your food and burns the alcohol instead, hence the "beer belly". Alcohol, as well as other high carb foods also make you crave more alcohol and high carb foods- a terrible cycle to fall into either way.

756140 tn?1294767094 And fiber pulls some of the calories you eat through your digestive system before they can be absorbed. So fiber helps reduce overall calorie intake in two key ways." No wonder Finnish researchers found that overweight folks who consumed more fiber and less fat lost three times more weight than folks who didn't. And that's really only the beginning of what the banana plan on these pages can do for you.

Avatar f tn Usually creams or other products designed to be absorbed through the skin need special chemicals to help them get through the skin barrier (water doesn't penetrate the skin, nor do most soaps, lotions, or other things you usually put on your skin. Skin is designed to keep out foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria, so it isn't easy for most things to be absorbed).
Avatar m tn I wouldn't go as far as previous poster that all will be fine once he is 'dried out' but it will give the doctors a better view on what is caused by the drinking and the underlying symptons. If that is not an option, make sure he gets enough Thiamine (Vitamine B1). Alcohol makes it hard for any B vitamines to get absorbed into the system and Thiamine is essential for nerves. These are pills you can get everywhere.
Avatar n tn prichard16 - yes, the types of calories makes a difference. While I agree with caregiver222, that 1000 calories is 1000 calories; if you make that 1000 calories a mix of fruits, veggies, dairy, lean meats, nuts, etc --- you will be much healthier and more likely to lose weight than if you get that 1000 calories from 5 candy bars (200 calories/each) throughout the day........... there's a huge difference........
Avatar n tn I drink ENSURE PLUS, which is designed to give you vitamins and nutrients that you are not getting from food, plus give you some extra calories. You can find that at most grocery stores. I also have this protein powder which you put in the blender with milk or water, and anything else you want to mix with it. It is called MAX and is made to help you gain weight quickly.
Avatar n tn most of us drink coffee (me too) .. but it does not count as water to our bodies. Drink water! The alcohol (which can be used in moderation) are empty calories that make it very difficult to lose weight if you are doing so on a weekend basis. Here are some facts ... Alcoholic beverage, distilled, all (gin, rum, vodka, whiskey) 94 proof - 1 fl oz (not much) is 76.45 calories. Carbohydrates are okay but I suggest keeping them to a minimum.
Avatar n tn It has no effect on health, (as long as your partner does not have AIDS). Playboy even did an analysis once of the calories, in case ladies were worried about getting fat. Almost no calories.

Avatar f tn In order to lose one pound, you will need to burn 3,500 more calories than you consume in a day. If you weigh 150 pounds, then you burn about 1,500 calories per day just by going about your usual business. If you eat 1,000 calories, then you'll need to burn 3,000 additional calories each day to lose one pound.Eat low-calorie foods that fill you up. Your diet should consist primarily of vegetables and lean proteins. Eat lettuce, celery, broccoli, green beans, spinach, and other greens.
1655866 tn?1320498966 Simple carbs are broken down and absorbed by the body very quickly, and if not used immediately as energy, quickly turn to fat and will be stored in the body. Simple carbs include any food made with sugar, white flour or white rice; this would include junk (candies, pastries, etc) and fast foods. In addition to carbs, junk and fast food tend to have a lot of fat in them.
1555116 tn?1294483683 If weight loss comes about by burning more than you eat, how can this be possible, especially on such a healthy diet and exercise plan, and particularly without all those alcohol calories? Any help anyone could give would be very much appreciated.
362249 tn?1441315018 Alcohol can trick you. It has calories so must be taken into account in your daily caloric counts but it does dehydrate you. Providing you don't drink alcohol the next day you will rehydrate and be back where you should be providing you didn't immensely go over your calorie intake. I just count it as it is since I weigh in daily.
Avatar f tn Your profile states that you have stage 4, cirrhosis, (not sure if you are compensated or not) it is not recommended that cirrhotics ingest any alcohol. If you had less liver disease, as most persons of this forum, it would not be an issue. How much alcohol gets burned off when cooking is debatable (see below) but is it really worth the risk to damage your liver even further?
