362971 tn?1201987034 207 Clearly, for heavy alcohol users, efforts should be undertaken to treat the alcohol abuse and dependence before starting treatment, but treatment is not contraindicated for persons who have an occasional drink of alcohol or who have a history of alcoholism. Although no consensus opinion exists, it seems reasonable to recommend either the complete suspension of alcohol intake while on treatment or to restrict the use of alcohol to an occasional drink during the course of the treatment.

Avatar n tn What I read on your post describes alcohol withdrawal's physical effects. With alcohol use, it's more about tolerance of certain amounts. What may be a lot for one person isn't or is a lot for another. It's a lot for your husband, from the sounds of it, since he experiences tremors and black outs (not recalling conversations, how he got somewhere, etc.).
Avatar m tn It is of great importance to disease management that physicians understand the factors influencing HCV disease severity, especially those that are potentially modifiable. The use and abuse of both alcohol and marijuana together is not an uncommon behavior. Also, individuals who are moderate and heavy users of alcohol may use cannabis as a substitute to reduce their alcohol intake, especially after receiving a diagnosis like HCV, which affects their liver.
Avatar f tn Wondering what the difference is between physical dependence and addiction (if there really is a difference). I take xanex for my panic attacks and anxiety and am definitely dependent on it. However, when a person is physical dependent on alcohol, they are an alcoholic - or tobacco, they are addicted to it. So why is there a difference?

The risk of abuse and dependence is greater for those taking higher Valium doses for long periods of time (more than a few weeks). Because Valium can cause dependence, you should not stop taking Valium suddenly without first discussing it with your healthcare provider (see Valium Withdrawal). •Valium can cause severe drowsiness and difficulty breathing, which may be life-threatening.
