Common Questions and Answers about Adult adhd symptoms treatment

adhd

Avatar n tn ADHD tends to run in families and most adults don't realize they have it until they have a child that is diagnosed with it. About 60% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms after the age of 18....There is a lot of debate about the disorder being possibly underdiagnosed in adults, especially in women. The numbers are around 4-6% of adults are thought to have ADHD and only 1-3% are diagnosed...
707438 tn?1240963240 I for one highly disagree but was wondering about how others felt regarding Adult ADD/ADHD. All opinions are welcome but PLEASE be considerate about others thoughts and feelings.
Avatar f tn Discoverering ADD/ADHD is becoming more common in adulthood. What kind of symptoms are you having?
Avatar f tn But your symptoms are also classic ADHD as well as your self medication reactions. To get a feeling for what adult ADHD is like check out the link and the advice posted here. http://www.medhelp.org/posts/ADD---ADHD/Being-judged-for-having-ADHD/show/1327105 You ask about resources for people like you. My first question would be - what kind of a doctor is your doctor? I have seen too many stories in my 3 or so years on this forum where the doctor didn't have a clue.
Avatar n tn If ADHD goes undiagnosed till adulthood what are some of the symptoms? Can depression be one? Can Bipolar be one? Is addictive personality a symptom of any one of these?
Avatar f tn The psychiatrist that I've been seeing for other meds simply opened his DSM manual, listened to my symptoms and asked if I wanted treatment. I didn't like this attitude either. So I'm going to go with my family doctor on this one. I also see a very good therapist who will support me, but has mixed feelings about the ADD diagnosis. Thanks again.
Avatar n tn If you do have ADHD you won't get dependent on them. If you don't have ADHD, they can be seriously addicting. For that reason alone (plus a bunch or others), you need to see a doctor that can help you. I would try to find a psychologist or psychiatrist that specials in ADHD. Stay away from your general MD. The reason for that is that you want someone who can give you more than just meds.
Avatar f tn i would like anybody who has a 9 year old son or daughter to tell me what are the symptoms of ADHD before i take my nephew to a pdoc...........
Avatar f tn even social aquaintences seem to ask if I have ADD/ADHD. After talking to some friends with ADD I am convinced that some sort of treatment/medication would greatly help my daily function. How do I begin to see about this? What kind of doctor do I see. Is he going to laugh at me as an adult asking about an illness that seems to be diagnosised in childhood? I just don't even know where to start. Do you have a good reccomendation on how to begin, what I'm sure will be somewhat of a process?
Avatar n tn I take abilify and citalopram for the schizoaffective disorder and vyvanse for the adhd symptoms. I find that since i have been given adhd meds, my condition has stabilized completely. I was not well on the schizoaffective meds alone. i still had problems concentrating and with focus .As well as social problems and listening to others and paying attention.
Avatar f tn I am obviously on a combination of medications but I am prescribed Modafinil for my ADHD symptoms, they won't even try usual ADHD medication as in my case the repercussions could be dangerous. I find this medication has really helped with my attention and concentration, as bi-polar and ADHD symptoms can overlap I'm realistic with what the medication can do in my case but it has certainly helped.
Avatar m tn //************.
Avatar f tn I can associate with much of your daughter's personality/behaviour, except I have learning difficulties and ADHD type symptoms. I have to ask a number of times for people to repeat their indtructions and even then actually processing what they want is difficult. I had an IQ test at age 14 and it revealed I had above average intelligence in mechanical apptitude. Finally looked up the definition of Mechanical apptitude the other day and thought, "Didn't help me much in life".
Avatar n tn I consider myself to be more of a creative person than a person that enjoys memorizing infinite volumes of data(even though I am capable of this, I derive no pleasure from it). I have made extensive research concerning adult ADD and ADD in general and I do believe that in my first 6 or 7 years of school I did not exhibit any of the symptoms of ADD. I do believe, however, that these symptoms started manifesting a short time after this period of my life.
521840 tn?1348844371 Instead, an adult is more likely to report ‘inner restlessness’ or problems with impulsivity. Symptoms of ADHD impact important adult tasks such as remembering to pay the mortgage, paying attention while driving, or managing your children’s schedules. Studies have shown that people with ADHD have higher rates of underachievement, car accidents, career setbacks, and substance use. Adults with ADHD have significant problems functioning in their daily lives.
Avatar m tn These days there actually are neurological tests that support ADHD diagnoses. Symptoms and careful, loving team work, being an advocate for yourself or your child are what is most important. Nothing can be accomplished by hurting eachother. Of course there are people who are misdiagnosed with adhd when they should not be.
1453183 tn?1287852619 Hey CBL welcome back!!!! Although, we will probably have some disagreements, I totally agree with your web site about checking into other factors that can cause AD/HD symptoms. I think too many doctors (probably usually pediatricians cause they tend to be way too busy to have the time) go for the simple fix. Things like sleep apnea, allergies, toxins, etc. are definitely worth looking into. And I do agree with you that the long term effects need more study.
Avatar n tn These symptoms may also be caused by mood disorders (such as depression and bipolar disorder), alcohol/illicit drug abuse, and personality disorders (such as Borderline Personality Disorder), which may all co-exist with ADHD. The treatment of adult ADHD with amphetamines or Ritalin may help with an increased attention span, improved mood, and decreased impulsivity.
Avatar m tn Emotional difficulties Many adults with ADD/ADHD have a hard time managing their feelings, especially when it comes to emotions like anger or frustration.
220090 tn?1379170787 Wow, I never connected my behavior, and post-tx symptoms to any one particular medical affliction...but after just reading a list of adult ADD symptoms on the web...I would have to say that I currently have just about EVERY one! Thank you for the insight, and I will follow up on this line of thought immediately. I never functioned like this before my two tx'es....but now, after reading the web sites for ADD, feel like I could be a "poster child" for the illness.
Avatar f tn That it can be horrible for a child or an adult if they have ADHD and can't cope. I also believe that a child will not be drugged out of their individuality IF the medication is properly done. Even then, meds alone is not the answer and may not even be necessary. Education is! I completely understand where you are coming from. I have had kids(I enjoyed ) go on to other teachers who destroyed them because the child dared to question them.
Avatar f tn As for differences between bipolar and adult ADD - google has information, personally I believe adult ADD to be up their with childhood *** as about most over diagnosed thing around and do not remotely believe its as prevalent as people say - I have met plenty of adults who claim to be ADD and not one of them truly fits the symptoms and the behaviours but hey they get ritalin and it works so they must be ADD right? * Ritalin works on non ADD and ADD people in most cases...
Avatar m tn I have battled depression since I was a teen and recently was told I have adult add. I find myself not really wanting to ever go any where or do anything and I am very irritable. I feel like a horrible mother and like I am not doing what other mothers whom seem to have it all do. I love my kids very much. I find myself constantly wondering what if this happens what if that happens. I seem to worry about everything actually. Money, bills, house work I need to get done.
Avatar m tn I was recently diagnosed with adult add. My doctoe prescribed adderall 20mg a day. It helps a lot with focus & motivation. But when I am at work or in social settings I feel paranoid & xtreme anxiety. My doc said he is upping my prozac that would help with social anxiety. But it will take a month to feel a benefit from that & the adderall will probably just override it. I did not take the adderall todday b4 work. I don't know what to do. Just take adderall on my days off?
Avatar n tn My doctor put me on Buspar, 5 mg 2x a day to help with my ADHD...but I have not read any solid literature on Buspar and its effects on ADHD symptoms. Is this a good drug to go on for ADHD? Has anyone else been on this drug for ADHD? I haven't noticed any difference in my ability to remember/concentrate but have been taking it for a little over a week now and seem a bit (I use this lightly..) less anxious...but, still need my ADHD treated.
429949 tn?1224695179 HAS ANYONE HAD ADULT ADEM? I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THIS FOR NOW, BUT NEUROLOGIST IS STILL CHECKING ME WITH REPEAT MRI's EVERY SIX MONTHS TO WATCH FOR EVIDENCE OF MS. HAS ANYONE GONE THROUGH ADULT ADEM OR HAS ANYONE BEEN STUCK BETWEEN THESE TWO DIAGNOSIS' S. AS ADEM IS RARE IN ADULTS I WOULD BE THANKFUL TO TALK TO ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN THROUGH THIS ILLNESS AND CAN GIVE ME SOME INSIGHT.
Avatar f tn Most people with anxiety have ADHD symptoms but, in fact, do not have ADHD (this is why so often one will read that Ritalin or similar medication is not working). I also believe that mild/moderate anxiety can be helped with herbal and/or natural remedies. So, why not try this route as a first option. However, from reading your first post, I get the impression that you are suffering from more than just "mild" anxiety issues.
