467977 tn?1262718347 People with ADHD have low levels of dopamine (which controls behaivour and concentration). The medications for ADHD are amphetamines, which are stimulants. When taken, they speed up your brain and raise dopamine levels. For a normal person, it makes them feel happy! But, to a person with ADHD, all it does is brings the dopamine levels back to normal allowing then to function normally. So not alot, if not at all OTC meds will do much but try fish oils if its desperate.

Avatar f tn I've been posting on this site for close to 5 years and I have never seen a post by anyone saying anything naturally helped their child (with ADHD) outside of normal good dietary practices. The thing that will most help your child is for you to be informed about ADHD as possible. I highly recommend that you get the book, "The ADD/ADHD Answer Book" by Susan Ashley. It will be a tremendous resource for you.
Avatar f tn I also have ADHD and am on adderal. Can anyone give your experience with medicating a young child? Is one medication better? How do you recognize bad side effects from meds and what to look for? Do the meds change the child's personality? We also are using trial and error to find the best system to keep him focused with his daily tasks and homework. I do have many questions, but would like to start out small.

Avatar f tn Kennedy - I thought that supplements such as Omegas, Vitamin B complex, magnesium and zinc have shown to help ADD/ADHD. I agree that, these supplements will not eliminate the symptoms. I think that research ahs shown that these supplements help to reduce the symptoms and also reduce the amount of medicine needed, assuming the parent decides to use medication. I would appreciate your comments.

Avatar m tn I'm 41 yrs old and diagnosed with ADHD because of my symptoms. I was prescribed Vyvanse. I took 20mg today but it put me to sleep. I was wondering if there was a possibility of me having thyroid problems because of this effect the Vyvanse had on me? I thought i was going to be focused and energized. Can you please let me know if this is the effect Vyvanse does to people with thyroid problems? Thank you.
Avatar n tn We are currently testing this relation in a double-blind, placebo-controlled intervention in a population of children with clinically diagnosed ADHD who exhibit symptoms of EFA deficiency. Most kids with ADHD and behavior disorders are deficient in magnesium, B-complex, zinc and calcium. My son is 8 and is 60 lbs and takes 400 mg magnesium, 25 mg zinc, 50 mg B-complex and 600 mg calcium + D per day as well as Efalex.

Avatar n tn They will jerk my daughter's legs or arms like she is flinging them or similar to what you do with a cold shiver that goes up your spine. Have bought Calcium/Mag/Zinc tablets and Hyland's Restful Leg, and bananas. Any other suggestions?
Avatar f tn I am also on Vyvanse for ADHD and that decreases my appetite. However, I have been on Yaz for a few months, and I swear it reverses all the positive effects of Vyvanse (more energy/decreased appetite) because I am so tired and hungry all the time. In the past I have tried Lo-Estrin, Nuva-Ring,& Ortho Tri Cyclen. Does anyone have any recommendations for the perfect pill--i.e.
Avatar f tn I had chest pain from vitamin B12 deficiency and magnesium deficiency personally. I can recommend sublingual B12 (I prefer the spray) and magnesium chelated with amino acid supplements at the very least just to see if you feel any better. I see you have depression as well. I had severe depression due to vitamin B12 malabsorption in particular but other conditions from magnesium deficiency to hypothyroidism also caused mental health issues as well.
Avatar f tn He wants me to start my son Vayarin which basically seems to be a type of Omega 3's that is by prescription only, Magnesium, Zinc and 20mg of Methylphinidate. Also sending him for fine motor skill therapy and evaluation for possible problems with language acquisition. Does all of this sound normal? Never thought a doctor would prescribe the vitamins. Is there anything else I should maybe be asking for or about? I would greatly appreciate any help.

Avatar f tn -Try trial thyroid treatment with an alternative doctor just to see if it helps. 2. I have ADD or ADHD. I've had doctors suggest CFS to me and family -For the CFS, could try some viral testing and antiviral meds if my doctor allows. Or see an infectious disease specialist for this. -I've been reading from alternative doctors that underneath ADD and CFS is an adrenal problem...
Avatar f tn Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Tom Frieden made headlines last year when he proclaimed that the United States would "soon be in a post-antibiotic era," meaning we'd be plagued by everyday infections that our drugs could no longer handle. It appears that age is already on our doorstep. Newborns in India are now dying at alarming rates from infections that were once curable, The New York Times reported on Thursday.
Avatar n tn I was told by a few people to have my daughter tested for ADD/ADHD. These people that have suggested to have my daughter tested are around her every day and see how she acts. I am having a problem deciding what to do. I need to know if any one has any advice on what to do. I have seen people on med. for ADD/ADHD and I have seen what it does to them when they have used them for half there life. I do not want my daughter to end up the way these people have ended up in using these meds.
Avatar n tn Your son's behavior is more extreme than can be explained by ADHD alone, though that may well be part of the problem. Perhaps it is reasonable to proceed with a trial on stimulant medication at a low dose and see if it benefits your son. In terms of managing the behavior, a very sound plan is detailed in the book SOS: Help for Children. It is available in Spanish (if that is your native language). If you follow the plan very closely your son will improve.

Avatar m tn As many as 50%–80% of children with Tourette's disorder have some symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD), including a short attention span, restlessness, poor concentration, and diminished impulse control. On average, ADHD will manifest two and a half years before the tics appear. A dual diagnosis of ADHD and tic disorder is associated with more severe tics and greater social impairment than for tic disorder by itself.
Avatar n tn ), magnesium, other B vitamins, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, iron, vitamin A..., hypothyroidism, severe insulin resistance, estrogen deficiency, adrenal insufficiency. There might be some genetic issues in regards to dopamine (father has Parkinson's) because I've done a lot of work trying to get my levels up and I still have symptoms. The info below doesn't list all the symptoms and causes of each neurotransmitter deficiency but it's a pretty good list from Nutritional Healing...
Avatar n tn For some children, there do exist biologically-based problems, usually having to do with neurotransmitters and other brain chemicals, that precipitate uninhibited, aggressive behavior. ADHD is one such condition, but not the only one. Generally, the reluctance you've experienced about diagnosing ADHD in such a young child is a wise caution.
Avatar n tn You have to give the correct balance of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in order for the DHA to work properly. Zinc and B-6 also helps with absorption (but you have to give all the B-vitamins in order for B-6 to do its job. Kyle takes 25 mg zinc and 50 mg B-complex every day, along with his Efalex and an extra 100 mg DHA. I also give him 250 mg C as an antioxidant to promote clearer thinking.
Avatar n tn Hey, I read what you wrote and I believe I know what might be your son's problem. I am 13 and I have ADHD, my dad has ADHD and BIPOLAR. I think your son might have Bipolar. Symptoms are similar to ADHD. Except the are depressed for longer, want to be alone the WHOLE time and are very suicidal. My dad is using a pill called EPILIM. It is specially made for people who have Bipolar. Try it, it might help. Best of Luck!
