Avatar n tn There are a lot of suggestions that I could give him on helping children with ADHD, since I have probably 300 posts on this subject on this forum, but I kind of got sidetracked by your comments. I think what upset me the most was the idea, that the dad would, "try to turn him into something else by drugging him." I have read a lot of your posts to parents of pre-school children and many of your suggestions are right on.

Avatar n tn why don't doctors test for other things and not just put on medicine for add or adhd. by dollyn, 7 hours ago It seems these days that doctors teachers along with some parents . ...
Avatar f tn Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, is one of the most common mental disorders that develop in children. Children with ADHD have impaired functioning in multiple settings, including home, school, and in relationships with peers. If untreated, the disorder can have long-term adverse effects into adolescence and adulthood. Asperger's Disorder is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder.
Avatar f tn Why do you suspect add/adhd? It could be but you mention things that are read flags for other issues. For example, my son had a terrible time writing. He was resistent to it because it was hard for him . . . he'd have avoided it all together if he could. He had trouble with other fine motor things like scissors as well. He has sensory integration disorder and with sensory which is a processing issue, he had trouble with motor planning.
Avatar n tn you need to find a school for gifted children with his own age. God Bless you.
Avatar f tn How frustrating for you to have to find that out after the fact. In support of ADHD, however, these medications for children with ADHD without seizure disorders are a Godsend if diet changes and behavior modifications do not help. The right medication has to be found for each individual child just like other disorders. ADHD is neural disorder just as seizure disorders. Both affect the brain but in different ways.
Avatar n tn Please contact a good cognitive therapist that works with children with ADD/ADHD. Try and get rid of those drugs if you can, or at least minimize them as much as you can. Control his diet, use alternative treatments, pray, do anything you can as most people will tell you that have been using Adderall for many years; "I wish that I never started down THAT ROAD!!!!!" In any event, talk to your doctor first of course, but do not give him the drugs every single day.

I just read about it online and was wondering if anyones tried it...my daughter currently takes dexadrine but it just has too many side effects..she's 5 and can now fit back into her size 3 pants and they are too big. Avatar n tn Strattera can be a good choice for children who do not respond well to a stimulant medication, or for children who cannot take Ritalin (e.g., if they have a history of seizures). It is usually wise to proceed with one of the stimulant medications (if Ritalin or another of the methylphenidate products is not useful, perhaps one of the dextroamphetamine prodicts, like Adderall, will be a better choice).
Avatar f tn Do we medicate for adhd and ocd?? Which first??? Or do we NOT medicate at all. We do not want to medicate but also don't want him to suffer at school and other places he is struggling with the anxiety. PLEASE HELP.
Avatar n tn For a useful, workable, practical and effective manual for behavior management (for average children as well as for children who display ODD or other conditions), take a look at Lynn Clark's S.O.S.: Help for Parents - it's a wondeful resource.
707438 tn?1240963240 Thats dumb to say children only have ADD/ADHD. I'm 21, and I'm still ADD. when i was a kid i did have ADHD. i was real disruptive in classes, and would constantly get notes sent hope from school. The hyper-ness went away once i became aware of what i was doing and was able to mature from it... not i'm the quietest person you'll ever meet. I still have trouble in college. ESPECIALLY with reading.
Avatar f tn From personal observations, I think it is harder for really smart kids to deal with ADHD. The sense of frustration that they feel is huge, and this can progress to destructive behavior. All of the things that you have listed - I have seen in ADHD kids. What you need to do is to start to research what ADHD is and how to deal with the consequences of it. Understanding ADHD really makes a big difference in how you deal with the child. I mentioned the following books in a post below.
Avatar n tn The 2-3 grams is what my psychiatrist told me to take. I'm an adult but most research on ADHD is on children so I'm sure the amount is fine for a 12yr old. If she doesn't tolerate fishoils she may get loose stools as a side effect. There is no problem taking fish oils with either vitB or C but I don't know Focus Fast. What's in it? And in what amounts?
Avatar f tn So when he'd come home with one page of journaling homework, or flash cards, or he'd need to read a library book for a classroom test, he'd seem to shut down within minutes of starting. Frustrated and crying, easily distracted, what seemed to be carelessness with his writing, and practically no memory retention for what he'd just read.
597354 tn?1227201532 The doctor was very concerned then about my grandson who is almost 5 and said we need to keep an eye on him. He has been diagnosed already with ADHD and is on meds for it (i hate that). My question is - do children have thyroid problems that young or is it usually later in life? It may sound like a stupid question to some people but I really don't know and I haven't had time to research it. I didn't really even consider that he could have a problem at such a young age.
Avatar f tn Yes my son did not speak full sentences until he regained his hearing and since has had some sensitivity to noises. I will like to test my son for Autism and ADHD. I took a online screen-er for Autism and it indicated 89 mild PDD. When I took this online screen-er I realized how similar ADHD and PDD are.We do not want to take the chance of a wrong diagnoses.
Avatar m tn Try given him Vitamins like omega 3-6-9 and B6 ,B12 and a childs multivitamin they can all help better than those drugs they use for for people that they say have add or adhd and bipolar.
5757880 tn?1395581622 (In May the school tested and qualified him for an IEP) Well, he is at a three-tier diagnosis. (1) ADHD (Combined Type), (2) Generalized Anxiety Disorder and (3) R/O of Autism Disorder. Mind you, the doctor cannot test my son for Autism because the medical community in my area still follows the DSM-4 and the school system follows DSM-5, so they informed me to ask the school to test him in his 2nd semester.
Avatar n tn The FDA has not approved most antipsychotics for the treatment of Bipolar Disorder in children. Find out which meds have been approved for the treatment of specific disorders, and get a second opinion. Also, please be advised that there is only clinical support for the diagnosis of early onset Bipolar Disorder. The American Psychological and Psychiatric Associations have not yet formally recognized Bipolar Disorder as a childhood disorder.
Avatar n tn That being said I see three major lapses in your child's care 1. She's too young to be treated for ADHD. 2. She should have been evaluated for cardiac arrhythmia before being placed on the med. If she was evaluated for heart function before being placed on it you should know whether she had the PACs before the med. That should lead to a conclusion about whether the med caused the arrhythmia.
Avatar n tn Dear Joanna, There really is no test, per se, for ADHD. Rather, it is a descriptive diagnosis based on the presence of a particular array of eighteen symptoms. If a sufficient number of symptoms are present, before a definitive diagnosis of ADHD can be concluded, it's necessary to determine if there is any other reasonable explanation for the symptoms other than ADHD. In other words, other conditions need to be rules out.
Avatar f tn Thank you for sharing your story. It is important to remember that he is still your son and there for you to love. He needs you. You will be his best advocate in seeking services/help for him as you deal with the various professionals and teachers in his life. The sooner you can get the testing done and find out what they suggest you do (direction to go), the better the outcome for him. With not knowing, you are left hanging out there.
388154 tn?1306365291 Isnt the drug prescribed to children for ADHD a form of speed? i know its from the meth family of drugs.I dont under stand on on hand they are giving meth to kids but they lock you up if you make and use it...i know meth is the devils food, dont get me wrong, its a very evil drug...so why is it ok to give to children 5 years of age....am i missing something?
Avatar f tn This sort of assessment is useful for young children because it will assess the variouys spheres of development (fine and gross motor, cognitive, social, emotional). That is what I would recommend at this point.
Avatar n tn 30 and noon for his ADHD has trouble sleeping at night he also takes mirtazapine 15 mg to help him sleep guanfacine 1mg 1/2 3 times a day he also will poo in his pants can antone help mw with this thank you
Avatar f tn because they don't want to send for more test to be done .because this means more work for them and money for the insurance company.
Avatar n tn If you do have ADHD you won't get dependent on them. If you don't have ADHD, they can be seriously addicting. For that reason alone (plus a bunch or others), you need to see a doctor that can help you. I would try to find a psychologist or psychiatrist that specials in ADHD. Stay away from your general MD. The reason for that is that you want someone who can give you more than just meds.
