adhd

Avatar f tn Hi. My son is 10 years old with severe adhd. He has been on meds since he was 5. Recently we have had to change his meds for the first time in 5 yrs.(nightmare) I hadn't really thought about it til now but am really interested in some natural remedies for this. Even some over the counter meds would be fine. Does anyone have something they do for their child that works well?
5856747 tn?1403352282 ADHD is diagnosed on the bases of the child’s behaviour alone. This may be done using the International Classification of Diseases or ICD-10. There are no other tests to confirm the diagnosis and this again may cause difficulty in accepting ADHD as a disorder. Features of ADHD behaviour will include: • Inattention to instructions. • Inability to learn or retain. • Inability to stay with a specific task or to complete it. • Inability to hold attention to what is being said to them.
Avatar m tn Children who are or have been on ADHD drugs have an increased risk of committing suicide.Even the American Psychiatric Association admits that suicide is the major adverse reaction of withdrawal from these drugs. Clarke reports that “symptoms usually peak within two to four days after withdrawal of the drugs although depression and irritability may persist for months. Suicide risk can persist for years.
Avatar f tn i would like anybody who has a 9 year old son or daughter to tell me what are the symptoms of ADHD before i take my nephew to a pdoc...........

Avatar f tn Children with ADHD usually do not exhibit psychotic symptoms or reveal a loss of contact with reality, whereas children with bipolar disorder may exhibit gross distortions in the perception of reality or in the interpretation of emotional events. Bipolar symptoms in kids differs for symptoms of adults. These are basic common symptoms: During a time of mania, children and teens may: Feel irritable and throw violent temper tantrums. Seem extremely happy and have high energy levels.
Avatar n tn I think checklists are fine as a supplement to a thorough study of the child's cognitive functioning and achievement, because symptoms of ADHD can occur for other reasons besides ADHD. Having a psychologist do a thorough assessment and consult with the pediatrician will give you the information you need to intervene effectively.
Avatar f tn Then, I would give some thought to myself and read up on ADHD, and also explore other factors in myself and in my life sotuation could also explain those ADHD symptoms and characteristics he/she is talking about. I don't take everything my doctors say as gospel. A good clinician usually goes through a process of "ruling out possible consitions" and fine tuning down to the differential that support the final diagnosis or diagnoses.
Avatar n tn ADHD tends to run in families and most adults don't realize they have it until they have a child that is diagnosed with it. About 60% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms after the age of 18....There is a lot of debate about the disorder being possibly underdiagnosed in adults, especially in women. The numbers are around 4-6% of adults are thought to have ADHD and only 1-3% are diagnosed...
Avatar f tn My nine yr old son has adhd and odd....opposional defiant disorder. He is on 4 differant medicatind, reperidone, guaficine, danphetimine salt combo and fluoxotine. He has to take thes SEVERAL times a day. It doesn't seem to help. He is extremly disrespectful, rude ,yellls at me my b.f. will not do any thing he is asked to do unless you ask him 500 times. And yes his dad also is not there. Bbxx I read your comments so you might be able to help.
Avatar f tn The problem with really intelligent kids is that they problem solve so fast. And the problem with 4 year olds is that they don't have alot of self control. Put it together and ya - you've got problems. Throw the possibility of ADHD into the mix and everything gets a lot worse. I really don't know if he has ADHD. How long ago did the doctors see him and what kind of a doctor saw him?
707438 tn?1240963240 It's much more logical to assume that we have different levels of this disorder and some of us are able, for what ever reasons, to learn to control some of the symptoms. I do see the creative side of ADHD - it's very evident in my own family but I do want to say that there is an alarming number of people in the prison population who test positive for it - as high as 30%. I have also experienced this side firsthand. Best of luck.
Avatar m tn These days there actually are neurological tests that support ADHD diagnoses. Symptoms and careful, loving team work, being an advocate for yourself or your child are what is most important. Nothing can be accomplished by hurting eachother. Of course there are people who are misdiagnosed with adhd when they should not be.
1453183 tn?1287852619 My son has been diagnosed with having ADD/ADHD and was put on Atterall and then a year ago the doctors took him off the medication and his schooling has suffered because of it. My question is would home schooling him help him or hurt him in anyway? And What else can I do to teach my child how to help control his symptoms?
Avatar f tn have a hyperactive 5 and a half yr. old boy. Hyper since birth.Changing diapers was difficult. I am used to this and it has gotten a bit easier to manage since then. Alot of his behavior seems like ADHD,the type that is hyper but "takes everything in". He never liked loud music, covers his ears. And also complained once of lights being too bright at Gymnastics class (which he DID NOT LIKE). He will interact with other children and isn't shy once he gets comfortable.

Avatar f tn Do you have an opinion regarding the use of Tenex/ guanfacine for ADHD treatment -- of hyperactivity and impulsivity?
Avatar m tn My 11 year old son diagnosed with ADHD deperission. He is taking meds that I feel couter act one another....reperidone.25mg 2 x day, vyvanse 30 mg 1 x a day, zoloft 1/2 25mg a day, and methyphidate 10 mg 1 x a day in afternoon. Help. Does these different medicines seem necessary. He is still have concentration issues.
Avatar n tn Simply because it is not a prescrition drug, and is manufactured from a natural substance, is not a reason to give it to a child as young as four in any case. Diagnoses of ADHD in children as young as four have to be suspect - after all, the core symptoms of ADHD (overactivity, inattention, impulsivity) normally occur to some extent in most four year olds. If your child, though, is extremely hyperactive (i.e., at the severe end of the spectrum), Dexedrine might be considered.
Avatar m tn Last week I was finally diagnosed as ADHD/Bipolar after years of being misdiagnosed as depression. (My new psychiatrist said it's not uncommon because most bipolars only seek treatment for the depressive episodes). I have an appointment next week hopefully to start meds. Does anyone have experience with meds for both?
Avatar n tn I suffer from ADHD and I would like to know if Modafinil (Provigil, Modiodal) is effective for ADHD. Currently Modafinil is used in the treatment of hypersomnia associated with narcolepsy. Since it has stimulating properties and is safer than Ritalin, it would be an ideal alternative. Is there any literature on its potential use for ADHD ?
Avatar f tn Discoverering ADD/ADHD is becoming more common in adulthood. What kind of symptoms are you having?
Avatar n tn Asperger's syndrome. Symptoms have been typical ADHD symptoms with aggressiveness, outright defiance and rage. Ritalin has unsuccessful in controlling any symptoms. Adderall was very successful in controlling a majority of symptoms but had the unfortunate side effect of insomnia. Luvox was prescribed to assist with sleep and minor anxiety symptoms. He had a horrible reaction to the Luvox. It caused further insomnia. Benadryl (over-the-counter) was suggested. Another horrible reaction.
Avatar f tn I do have symptoms of ADHD and also of BPD. I really dont know what to do. I am feeling scared a little more depressed than I usually am when I think about my issue. Should I take the treatment? Is it going to be a long treatment? Do ADHD and personality disorders occur together? PS: Ok I havent been to the doc again cos I fear he will put me on some drug which will make me drowsy leave me drooling all over like the other doc did.
