Avatar n tn I hae heard that there is a correlation between sleep apnea diagnosis and ADHD diagnosis. I was told that the symptoms look similar and unless you rule out sleep apnea i dont thiki its fair to the child to diagnos as ADHD. you should consult a specialist not just pediatrician.
Avatar f tn 1. Destructiveness may be seen in both disorders but differs in origin. Children who are ADHD often break things carelessly while playing (“non-angry destructiveness”), whereas the major destructiveness of children who are bipolar is not a result of carelessness but tends to occur in anger. Children who are bipolar may exhibit severe temper tantrums during which they release manic quantities of physical and emotional energy, sometimes with violence and physical property destruction. 2.
Avatar m tn Patients and their families, however, should be evaluated fully and use other treatment methods in conjunction with medication. Because the symptoms of tic disorders overlap those of OCD and ADHD, it is essential to determine which symptoms are causing the greatest concern and impairment, and treat the patient according to the single diagnostic category that best fits him or her, whether it is a tic disorder, OCD, or ADHD.
Avatar n tn Kids who are affected often appear/are diagnosed with ADHD and with treatment many no longer experience the ADHD symptoms. Sleep deprivation in kids and adults can cause horrific 'hallucinations' (half-dreams, basically) as well. There are a number of studies on these effects and they know so much more, but it's important to have the screening done; you can't tell just by watching them sleep.
1453183 tn?1287852619 In addition to poor diet being mistaken for ADHD, so can lack of sleep which may be caused by sleep apnea. I note that ADHD is almost almost defined in terms of school performance. This can be very damaging to the child. He lives perpetually the doghouse, even though he may be a delight at home and a pal to his siblings. As a rotten student he loses his worth. When my child received this questionable diagnosis I decided to pay no attention to it. I told them I did not care about her grades.
Avatar f tn have a hyperactive 5 and a half yr. old boy. Hyper since birth.Changing diapers was difficult. I am used to this and it has gotten a bit easier to manage since then. Alot of his behavior seems like ADHD,the type that is hyper but "takes everything in". He never liked loud music, covers his ears. And also complained once of lights being too bright at Gymnastics class (which he DID NOT LIKE). He will interact with other children and isn't shy once he gets comfortable.
Avatar n tn What Are the Symptoms? The primary symptoms of bipolar disorder are dramatic and unpredictable mood swings. The illness has two (BI) strongly contrasting phases (polar).
Avatar f tn Strattera does have some advantageous over the traditional stim medicines, but it will take 2 to 4 weeks until the maximum benefits will be felt. I included a link to a page that covers all those meds so you can compare the differences. http://www.leeheymd.com/charts/adhd_1.
Avatar dr m tn One thing that’s for certain, many children with ADHD, even if they don’t officially have sleep apnea, will have major sleep breathing or sleep hygiene issues. This situation is similar to patients who don’t have obstructive sleep apnea but have upper airway resistance syndrome, where they still stop breathing multiple times during the night. During the initial evaluation process, one of the first things to always consider is the possibility of a sleep-breathing problem.
Avatar n tn ADD is no longer a diagnosis in the most current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. ADHD is the current nomenclature and has 3 subtypes, hyperactive-impulsive type, predominately inattentive type, and combined type.

Avatar f tn My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD can anyone tell me if alcohol triggers angry outburst, impulsive behavior and ADHD symptoms? I use to blame it on the ADHD but I think she may be an alcoholic as well. She gets violent during her drinking bindges and has blackouts while she's awake, stays up for hours giving people around her plain ole hell.
Avatar n tn He's now undergoing developmental changes related to adolescence, and it could be that you are witnessing the symptoms of an emerging mood disorder (alongside his ADHD). Ask the clinician about this possibility. The chances of such an occurrence increase if there is a family history of mood disorder.
Avatar n tn The duration and intensity of physical outbursts and temper tantrums differs in the two disorders. Children who are ADHD usually calm down in twenty to thirty minutes, whereas children who are bipolar may continue to feel and act angry for up to four hours. 3. The degree of “regression” during angry episodes is typically more severe for children who are bipolar.
1883398 tn?1320768071 Its possible that she has swollen adenoids which could really affect her sleep. If that is true, it will cause ADHD like actions during the day due to loss of sleep at night. By the way, its possible that she might have fallen and hurt her wrist which can cause hand problems. See if she can grasp and squeeze your hand with force. If there is a difference between the two hands, there is certainly something wrong. Then have her hook a finger over one of your fingers and squeeze.

Avatar n tn My son is 8, he has Bipolar and ADHD. His meds are: Vyvanse and Tenex for the ADHD and Risperdal and Lamictal for Bipolar. He also takes Melentonin to help him sleep. This combination of drugs to help him has been wonderful. They all seem to compliment each other.
202436 tn?1326477933 ___________________________________________________________________________________________ I'm not really sure what I should be asking, but I need some information on TIC disorders and the differences between those and Tourette's. As long as I can remember I've had these "nervous habits" (that's what my Mom always referred to them as). Things like making noises or twitching my head, tensing abdominal muscles in a certain, repetitive way. blinking my eyes, crossing my eyes, etc.

Avatar m tn Richard Saul March 14, 2014 Over the course of my career, I have found more than 20 conditions that can lead to symptoms of ADHD, each of which requires its own approach to treatment. Raising a generation of children—and now adults—who can't live without stimulants is no solution.
Avatar n tn I have a 9 year old daughter. She hasn't slept well since she was about 5 and the doc suggested we use melatonin. Well now it doesn't work. Neither does any other herbal med. I don't want her on stronger med, but I need her to sleep. She has had her tonsils out, she is on the swim team so she works out every day, and is to be in bed by 8pm. I don't know what else to do. We were told it could be PTSD from her father being deployed when she was three, (he returned when she was 5).
Avatar n tn my son had abnormal brain activity/EEG due to sleep disorders. He's on clonazepam which has worked wonders for him and is tolerated well (it's not a stimulant); plus it's anti-anxiety and has all but cleared up his ADHD symptoms because he sleeps well now. I don't know about the results you've indicated, just thought extra information might be helpful in your discussions. good luck.
Avatar m tn One of the biggest co-disorders of ADHD is anxiety and depression, and those numbers go way up when they have had it for years and never knew what was the cause of their problems. Being able to concentrate on things that you like is not unusual - in fact, normal. And there are some very famous musicians with ADHD for that matter. So yes, if you are concerned enough to post - then I definitely think that you should be worried. Plus, you do have many of the symptoms!
2067929 tn?1331245354 Hello. My 7 year old son has been diagnosed with ADHD and possibly PDD or Aspergers. We are currently managing him on Concerta, methylphenidate (short acting), risperidone and Prozac. There's a very fine balance and if they are not in synch we see behavior issues. Now, at school he's great because he's in a program that's more like a boot camp but he's done SO well since being put in it. But....at afterschool program we see hitting and kicking etc.
Avatar f tn And stimulants make everyone wired, ADHD or not..otherwise all the ADHD people could sleep after taking it and they can't, hence they are wired..My husband has ADHD and he does need the medication, but he does get wired at times esp if he's taken a drug holiday from the stuff which he perodically has to do so the dose remains effective.
Avatar m tn Hi I just wanted to say that I have ADHD and am now 36. from my personal experience ADHD can make you feel very isolated and out of sync with people. As a child every day I felt that I was trying and trying and always messed up. In the end I was just so frustrated (no ones fault i know). In the end I just exploded and became a rebel. I am also on ritalin. I have found that if you don't have a break it kind of stops working. Does your son have breaks?
