Avatar n tn Your son may well display ADHD, but it is important to arrange a thorough evaluation and not rush too quickly to the diagnosis. The on-line surveys can be useful tools to see if a person might display symptoms typical of ADHD, but a thorough assessment will consider a child's medical history, family history, current functioning at home and in school, possible alternative explanations for the symptoms identified on the surveys, etc.
Avatar n tn Ritalin can certainly cause aggression IF it is given to someone who does not have ADHD or ADD. If a person does have AD/HD it should help with the aggression as they will gain more control over themselves. You didn't mention what the reason was that he was taking ritalin. If he does have AD/HD then when the meds wear off he may be going back to his normal self. I guess the question would be - did he have the same problems before he started the meds.
1327979 tn?1275235527 I've been told that I should get tested for ADD/ADHD a few times, and even my parents have suggested that I may have it, but they won't take me to a psychiatrist to be tested or diagnosed because of previous bad experiences they had when they took my older brother to one... Is there any way to diagnose with a reasonable amount of accuracy whether or not I have ADD without seeing a psychiatrist?
327385 tn?1378360731 Sounds like your talking about my daughter, and she has ADHD. They started her off on Adderal XR, but she is now on Vyvance (sp). She did and does all the things you have listed, including the stealing and not knowing why. Your best bet is to try and find a peds doctor that specializes in ADD/ADHD. If she is found to have ADHD, so of the things she does might not go away, like the stealing.

Avatar f tn "Treatment starts with controlling adhd symptoms." When a childs adhd symptoms "are reduced there usually is an improvement in ODD symptoms. Stimulant medications have been shown to decrease adhd symptoms, as well as those of ODD, by up to 50%." In my opinion, the doctors have been not dealing with the cause of her ODD. Nothing you have stated is really recommended to treat adhd. My recommendation for a good adhd medication starts with a good doctor.
Avatar f tn Depression and Anxiety are very common co-disorders of ADHD. And sometimes the bipolar diagnosis is not true due to the other symptoms. So its always worth taking a look at the difference between the two. Here are a couple of links for that. http://www.currentpsychiatry.com/home/article/adhd-or-bipolar-disorder-age-specific-manic-symptoms-are-key/2e1d5ec4615c5b9da40d435fca5f560c.html http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/2511.
Avatar f tn But when inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior are the norm for a child, it may be a sign of ADHD. ADHD can lead to problems at home and at school, with family, teachers, and peers, so it’s important to identify the symptoms and get help.
Avatar n tn //www.medhelp.org/add-adhd/slideshows/8-ADHD-Culprits-Lurking-in-Your-Home/21 I believe from my years of posting on the ADHD forum, that the single most important thing that you can do is to become an expert in ADHD because you are going to probably become the single most important change agent in his life (outside of meds). You will become his advocate in school. You will learn how to discipline him in a way that is effective and not punitive.
Avatar f tn He is really smart and loves to work on puzzles. Could his issue be adhd or does he just not care. I cant get him to clean at all at home. p.s There is a family history of thyoid issues.
Avatar m tn After dealing with his behaviors I feel like their may be something else going on, but am having a difficult time pin pointing it. He definitely has all of the ADHD symptoms, but some added on top. He seems totally unaware of anything going on around him and really doesn't react to discipline unless something important to him is taken away. He even smirks when being scolded. Not in an "I don't care" attitude, more like he doesn't get it.
Avatar f tn Hello, the key to determining if a young child has ADHD is to determine to what degree his symptoms are occurring across settings, and how much his behavior differs from that of other boys his age. Much of what you describe is common unwanted behavior in a boy his age, though it is clear that he needs to learn new skills to follow rules and keep himself safe.
Avatar n tn t sleep and always showing more and more the symptoms of ODD, ADHD and IED at school and at home. The doctor wanted to start a mood stabilizer but I don't want him on anything that will make him gain weight or turn into a zombie.
1768088 tn?1409087815 You have to be careful because what you might think are ADHD symptoms, could really be SID symptoms and stim meds will not help with that and could make it worse. I would call your doctor and see about cutting back on the dosage for a starter. Hope this helps. Let me know if or how the dosage change goes. Oh, Is this basically her first week of school? That whole process can be kind of scary and throw things off.
Avatar n tn My 11 year old is currently being reassessed by the local health authority for his adhd. I have had problems with him since he was about 3 years old. Just over two years ago I took him to a leading private clinic and they conducted a thorough assessment on him and concluded that he does have adhd, but due to his high IQ is not experiencing problems in school as he is intelligent enough to cope for reasonable periods.
Avatar f tn My son is 6 year old and in Kindergarten. At school he is calm. Pays attention. Has no problem learning. He's a good student. But as soon as he gets home he is hyper until bedtime! He has always been a hyper child but he can also sit down and focus when he knows he has to. So I am completely confused. At home he shows signs of ADHD or ADD but at school he doesn't. What could it be? He tells me he knows school is for learning so he don't want to be hyper there.
Avatar f tn Is he hyper? ADHD means they can't pay attention AND they are extremely hyper. If he isn't hyper, he could be ADD but no one will know for sure until he is tested. Is there anything going on at home that could be distracting, like a divorce or something else major?
Avatar n tn He does ok in school while not on meds but when at home he is a nightmare. He fits all the classic symptoms of ODD. At home he defies everything we ask him to do and he throws fits when he does not get his way. He is very disrespectful also. He doesn't have many friends and when he is around my friends children he always causes problems (they are girls). What other emotional problems would fit his behavior. It cause so much stress in our household.
